St. John the Baptist Catholic Church • Somonauk, Illinois
Dear Parishioners, Our Gospel today teaches us something very important; to share the gifts that God has given us, most notably the gift of faith. After he was baptized, Jesus went in search of those who could help him with his mission of salvation. He began with those closest to John the Baptist when he called Andrew and John. Andrew then in turn went and found his brother Simon and brought him to Jesus. If we read a little further beyond today’s Gospel passage we hear how Jesus then called Philip. Philip then went and found his friend Nathanial and brought him to the Lord. The Gospel tells us that Andrew and Philip in particular, couldn’t keep the good news of Christ to themselves. They felt the need to share it, to bring those closest to them to the Lord. This shows us how in the early Church personal contact was so important in bringing others to Christ. Andrew and Philip evangelized. They shared their faith with others. Personal contact is just as important today and really the most effective, to personally invite others to Christ through our words and our witness. It is already forty years since St. Pope John Paul II made the point that, “entire groups of the baptized have lost a living sense of the faith.” and urged the church to engage in a new evangelization with “ardor, methods, and expressions.” When the Pope urges the church to evangelize he means all of us. All of us are called and sent to participate in the new evangelization. When the Pope of happy memory warns that large groups in our culture have lost a living sense of the faith, that concerns me. As a church universal we are doing well, still over 1.2 billion members, but I am concerned locally. Our numbers at Mass here are steady, but there are so many in our community who don’t come to Mass. That’s where the new evangelization or battle against our secular culture comes in. We need to engage in this together as a concerted effort to always be ready and willing to give witness to Christ and his Church in giving witness to our Catholic faith. We do that by being authentic to who we are, by being Catholic, by following the catechism and the teachings of the Church. The first way we evangelize is by our commitment to living our faith day in and day out. The second way we evangelize is to imitate St. Andrew and St. Philip by sharing our faith with others by telling others about our faith, by bringing others to Christ. We do this by inviting our neighbor to Mass with us, inviting them to confession, holy hour, or to various parish events. In doing so, we give witness to the world of what is important to us. God Bless, Fr. Butler

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Our faith is not just about ideas. It’s really about
having an encounter with God and, in particular,
the Risen Christ! Once we give ourselves over to the
notion of God’s presence, we have to train ourselves
to listen for God’s voice and be attentive to God’s
call. Having companions on our faith journeys is so
incredibly important as they can help us fine-tune
our listening skills and discern God’s voice from
others we may be hearing. Faith is all about having
these profound encounters not only with God but
with our brothers and sisters, and creation itself.
Anyone or anything that is alive with God’s
presence becomes an occasion for God to speak
and call us to deeper graces and experiences.
“Come, and you will see.”
The example and teaching of Jesus, the lives of the
saints, those living among us and those glorified in
heaven, and the wonder and beauty of creation can
all serve to help us listen more clearly and assist in
positioning ourselves for this profound God meet-
ing. It is an encounter that can quickly and easily
lead to a friendship and intimate intertwining of
our souls to their Maker, making a claim on us like
no other. Then, the Word of God moves from being
just a body of ideas to something we simply accept
and do. The person of Jesus Christ swiftly moves
from being just a good prophet in word and deed to
the incarnate presence of God Himself, the Lamb of
God. The voice leads us to the Person behind it.
The Gospel is hard to follow. We can intellectually
debate whether what Jesus said is really what we
are asked to do. The Gospel ideas do not always
make sense in our practical, secular world. The
person of God always does. We can debate the
practicality and sense of ideas and doing so often
keeps the more difficult ones at a safe distance
away from us. Jesus said to love our enemy,
but we really don’t need to do that, our minds try
to convince us. It just doesn’t make sense. Yet, if
we are truly in love with the God who is behind the
voice of those words, they make perfect sense. Our
deep and intimate love of this God would even
find us laying down our lives for Him if necessary.
Speak Lord, your servant is listening.
