FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT • “NEITHER DO I CONDEMN YOU!” SAID JESUSISAIAH 43:16-21 PSALM 126:1-6 PHILIPPIANS 3:8-14 JOHN 8:1-11 “THE ADULTEROUS WOMAN”

Saint Augustine described today’s Gospel incident so powerfully with these words: “in the end only two remain – misery and mercy.” It is the day when misery and mercy meet.

Jesus is inviting us to ‘look inside’ and assess our relationship with God and with one another. “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her” (John 8:7).

In many ways, we act like the scribes and the Pharisees. We oppose ideas and opinions of persons we dislike. We arejealous and even hostile of their success. We have closed them our eyes and hearts, forgetting we are just like them.

Jesus treated the adulterous woman with mercy and compassion and was given a second chance. “Neither do I condemn you” (John 8:11). God does not want us to live perpetually with the pain, the sorrow,

the bitterness of past sins and wrongdoings.

“Remember not the events of the past, or remember the things of old; see, I am doing something new!” (Isaiah

43:18). “Just one thing: forgetting what is behind me, I race forward and run towards the goal” (Philippians 3:13).

“Go, and from now on do not sin anymore” (John 8:11).

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reveals in a dramatic manner the quality and extent of divine forgiveness.Sin could be as high as a sandy mountain along the shore but God’s mercy is as powerful as the waves

that in no time it would be flattened down and returned to the loving embrace of the ocean.

All we have to do is completely surrender to Jesus our past sins, past sorrows, past disappointments so as to experience His total healing. “Then our mouths will be full of laughter, and our tongues

with songs of joy for the Lord will do great things for us” (Psalm 126:2).

May Our Blessed Mother help us celebrate Holy Week with real passion, devotion and love for her Son, Jesus Christ!

“BEANNACHTAM NA FEILE PADRAIG!”*

So, Lads and Lassies lift a pint on high

To our glorious Monks of days gone bye

They spent their time in prayer and farming

Their talent with ink and quill most disarming

They copied old script. letters, and gospels

Written by Romans, Greeks and Apostles

They preserved our books and cultural treasures

And supplied the world with voluminous ledgers

Even Saint Patrick gave them a nod

They helped drive the snakes out of Erin’s Sod

To our Irish Monks and education

They saved “The word” and civilization.

PASTOR´S MESSAGE

It is with great joy that the worldwide Roman Catholic community welcomed the news of the election of

Pope Francis. His first contact with the world saw him humbly requesting the prayers of the faithful

gathered in Saint Peter's Square. His gestures of greeting had more the character of a wave to friends

than a regal acknowledgement of subjects. Both of these significant moments reminded me of the twin spiritual

heritages that shape the spirituality and sense of vocation of our new Pope.

The spiritual legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi is complex and challenging. As a young, wealthy aristocrat he

was living the "high life" until visionary experiences led him to question his materialism and narcissism. He re-

ceived a call from God in the small, dilapidated chapel of San Damiano that changed his life. "Go and rebuild my

church" he heard and interpreted it in a very literal way as a command to repair this little church with brick and

mortar. He gradually learned as he came to know God in prayer that the new life to which he was called was a mission of reform and renewal that

would transform the Church and not just a church in most fundamental ways. He embarked upon a life "embracing Lady Poverty" and never looked

back. He gathered around him friends and disciples who embraced his radical poverty, humility, simplicity of life style and love of the literal and

refreshing "Good News" of Jesus. He and his fellow "poor little ones" begged, preached and lived a challenging new way of following Jesus that

contrasted with the corrupt and anemic Christianity of the times. He brought an enthusiasm, freshness and challenging way of life to a tired Church

that was longing for fire and for the Holy Spirit. Francis did not just love poor people he became one of them so that he could live entirely dependent

upon God's grace.

The mendicant movements of Saints Francis and Dominic so transformed the Church as to fundamentally re-shape religious life, preaching,

celebration of the sacraments, church practice and the morals of the clergy. His way of following Jesus was not without its opponents but he was

quickly acknowledged for his holiness and example with a canonization by popular acclimation almost immediately following his death. He so

passionately sought to be identified with his Crucified Lord that he bore upon his own body the stigmata, the wounds of Christ. His ascetical practices

were severe and heroic but he also had concern and compassion for those unable to live in his way. In this way he showed the same wisdom as

Christ in calling all to conversion and to change of heart but with gentleness and charity. One simple event in Francis' life that I have always been

very attached to is the following. One night Francis awoke to hear crying in one of the huts that the brothers lived in. Inside he found the youngest

brother crying from hunger because of the severity of the fasting. Francis proceeded to wake everyone up, pull out all the food and have a feast so

as not to embarrass his teen aged brother in front of others.

It seems to me that the Holy Spirit was truly present in the papal conclave and helped the Cardinals to see with the deep vision of faith what our

Church needs the most today. It seems clear that we need authentic and inspiring leadership. A true fatherly love and compassion that meets sinners

where they are with love and forgiveness, and challenges us to do better. A simple, authentic lifestyle that leads by example is necessary. Francis

was a radical about important things and values. The same is what we need from our new Holy Father. Francis was never afraid to take a risk like

going to foreign lands, sharing hospitality with Muslims or challenging the status quo with a revolutionary interpretation of Christianity.

I am sure that Pope Francis is also the spiritual disciple of his Founder, Saint Ignatius of Loyola. He was formed by the Spiritual Exercises, a

surrender to God's will and a life of discernment and docility. I believe, however that it is leadership in the way of Francis, the "Poor Little One" that

our Church and our world so profoundly need. God Bless Pope Francis, God Bless our Church. In the challenging future may Francis and Ignatius be

our inspiration.

The 2013 Diocesan Services Appeal recently

launched in parishes across the Diocese of Palm

supported by this annual appeal. Because of

the DSA, and your generosity, the Diocese can

continue to support the many aspects of our

larger Church, including the 53 parishes and

missions, and our 19 schools. The DSA is the

primary source of funding for the Diocese,

providing more than 70 percent of the annual

operating income. The strength of our diocese

comes from us recognizing God’s gifts and sharing

a portion of these gifts for building up the Kingdom

of God. Please contribute to the Diocesan Services

Appeal and help us meet our Parish Goal.

Please consider your role in working with Ministry Leaders, parish staff and

TENEBRAE SERVICE

WEDNESDAY MARCH 27,

7:00pm TO 9:00pm

The word “tenebrae” is Latin for shadows. The purpose of the Tenebrae Service is to recreate the emotional aspects

of the Passion of Christ, so this not supposed to be a happy service, because the occasion is not happy.

If your expectation of Christian worship is that it should always be happy and exhilarating, you won’t appreciate

this service until the second time you attend it.

The purpose of this service is to re-establish the betrayal, abandonment, and agony of the events;

and it is left unfinished because the story isn’t over until Easter Day.

Come with a prayerful and somber expectation.

ST. JOAN OF ARC PARISH LITURGY COMMITTEE

“PASCHAL MYSTERY OF JESUS CHRIST”

Next Sunday,March 24th, is Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord.

We recall the triumphant entrance of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem to fufill

the will of God the Father through His paschal mystery.

The Paschal Mystery is the Passion, Death and Resurrection of

Jesus Christ. We focus our attention to this Holiest of all weeks- Holy

Week- on the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ. The word “paschal”

comes from an ancient Aramaic word, pascha (Hebrew pesa or pesach)

meaning Passover.

In John’s Gospel 13:1 makes a clear reference to Jesus’ passage

from this world to the Father. “Now before the feast of Passover,

Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world and go

to the Father.”

We invite everyone to participate fully in the celebration of the

Easter Triduum- Holy Thursday ( Mass of the Lord’s Supper), Good

Friday (The Passion of the Lord) and Holy Saturday ( The Easter Vigil in

the Holy Night. The greatest and most solemn of all solemnity.)

May the assurance of God’s infinite love so powerful than our

ungratefulness encourage us to unite ourselves to the Passion and

Death of Jesus Christ caused by our sinfulness so that one with Him in

suffering, we too may be worthy enough to join in His glorious

resurrection.

May Our Blessed Mother be with us on our Lenten journey and

renew us in spirit. God bless us all!

- Father Jimmy B. Hababag

cielo. Amén”.
