FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

COMMUNAL RESPONSIBILITY

The people of God forgot the covenant and flouted God's laws. They did not listen to the prophets among them, who spoke for God in warning them. Prophets are sent from God to remind us why we are here, but they are often, even in our own time, mocked, disregarded, and mistreated rather than thanked and listened to.

The book of Chronicles tells the results of these sins: the destruction of the temple and all of Jerusalem, murder, mayhem, and finally exile to a foreign land. Why are these stories in the Bible? Just to inform us of what happened to our an-cient forebears? What good would that be unless there were a message and a warn-ing for us as well? Are we people who follow the teachings of God, who obey the words of Christ in the second covenant in his blood? Or do we continue to wreak works of darkness and violence? We are reminded by these readings that we will be judged as a people, not just as individuals.

RESPONSABILIDAD COMUNAL

prójimo no ama a Dios. --San Vicente de Paúl

NOT ENOUGH

It is not enough for me to love God, if my neighbor does not love God.

--St. Vincent de Paul

Reflecting on God’s Word Andrea had done everything her parents had

warned her against and had lied to cover it up. But it’s impossible to keep a secret in a small

town, so she stopped talking to them. When they continued “nagging” her she moved out

“forever,” telling her parents she “didn’t have a family” anymore. Eight months later, broke and

lonely, she chanced to see her father on the street. Certain he would condemn her, she turned way—

too late. “Hello, Andrea. How have you been?” Andrea could not contain her tears when she

heard the words, “Sweetheart, your mom and I would love for you to come home.”

What must it have been like for the Israelites to learn that they were free to go home from their exile? No questions asked. All debts forgiven. A new beginning. If we can imagine their joy and

gratitude perhaps we can understand more deep-ly the tremendous gift we have been given in bap-tism—God’s mercy gives us the courage to leave

our self-imposed exiles and come home. —Virginia Stillwell

Living God’s Word We don’t always “come toward the light” (John

3:20). Sometimes we prefer the darkness. We might fear being condemned if our deeds are

brought to light or we may simply be unable to find our way in the dark. We need the light of Christ to help us believe once more in God’s

merciful love. Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

THE SANCTUARY LIGHT IN CHURCH BURNS IN MEMORY OF

ALL SOULS IN PURGATORY

“¡Hola Andrea! ¿Cómo has estado?

volvieras a casa”.

Derechos de autor © 2014, World Library Publications. Todos los derechos reservados.
