Wednesday, 15 May 2013 To whom it may concern, Kate Daniel completed professional experience placement at St James Catholic School Nar Nar Goon in 2011. During this time, Kate demonstrated a delightful approach to all students across Grade levels Prep to 6. Her interaction with both children and adults is naturally kind, compassionate and friendly. Following her teaching rounds, Kate as a local to the area, was offered a part time position as a School Officer (teacher’s aide) at St James. Kate worked at the school for 1 year in this capacity as she completed her university degree in teaching. It was with great regret that Kate was unable to continue working on staff this year as it clashed with her class timetable. As a classroom teacher and deputy principal I have had the opportunity to work with Kate not only within the classroom but also on a number of administration/professional tasks. While at St James, Kate has been required to perform a variety of roles and tasks that require flexibility, initiative and diligence. When working with children, Kate has been able to experience a wide range of duties that have included, working one to one with special needs students, managing small groups of students in both literacy and mathematics, supervising and umpiring sporting events, supervising and assisting on excursions, assisting with playgroup, assisting with playground duty, supervising indoor activities during lunch time and working with all students across P-6. As a teacher’s aide Kate is asked to help with many aspects of classroom and lesson preparation and is a competent user of technology to assist with tasks such as, typing, photography/video, printing, photocopying, laminating, digital displays, and binding. Kate is experienced in the use of iPads and interactive whiteboards. Kate has also participated in staff meetings, staff workshops, attended PLT meetings and assisted in extra curricula activities. When interacting with staff, Kate engages in conversation socially and professionally. She presents herself well for work, and has proven to be both punctual and prepared for the working day. Kate will often offer to assist with extra jobs that help create a cohesive and happy working environment.

When interacting with students, Kate demonstrates a genuine interest in getting to know students well and working towards catering for their specific needs. Kate has responded well to professional guidance and has demonstrated a keenness to improve her teaching practice through careful observation of her colleagues, asking questions and investigating outcomes. Kate demonstrates an excellent understanding of curriculum and teaching theory when involved in professional discussions and applies her knowledge when catering for individual needs in the classroom. I have been extremely pleased with Kate’s developing confidence and understanding of the classroom and wish her all the best with her future teaching career.
