PASTOR’S LETTER

Real Closeness

The gospel for the Second Sunday in Advent us meant to anchor us to an important fact: Jesus Christ is a real person! Luke’s passage begins with a set of facts rooted in history. We hear about the prominent figures of the era in that part of the world: Tiberius Cesar, Pontius Pilate, King Herod and Philip his brother. We also hear about the leaders of the religious establishment: Annas and Caiaphas, along with Zechariah the priest who also happens to be the father of John the Baptist. It's a history lesson ideal for fact checkers, which is what historians and biblical scholars do. But it’s also meant to grab hold of us: Jesus Christ isn’t a legend, or literary character, or a figure of ancient mythology. He’s a real person, rooted in history, and rooted in a time and era. As Luke’s gospel unfolds, we begin to experience how this person isn’t just fully human but fully divine, because Jesus is also the second person of the Trinity. He is Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” As Catholics, nothing expresses this reality more than the Eucharist. Jesus’ own body and blood become really present to us and enter into us. The almighty, all-powerful, all-knowing God of creation and God of the universe—born into human history—found a unique way to descend into our very souls. And his presence within us allows our soul to feel its worth, just like we sing in that beautiful Christmas song about a holy night. Jesus Christ becomes close to us, as close as our very being. Jesus Christ lived in human history, and can find a place to be within each one of us. Oneness with God isn’t a hope or wishful thinking, but a reality. Advent—the time of expecting Christ—always leads to Christmas.

Advent News

● Our Advent Communal Reconciliation Service (with individual confessions) will take place on Tuesday, December 18 at 7:00 PM at St. Matthew’s in Schaumburg. Reconciliation is an incredibly graced filled opportunity to prepare for Christmas.

● An Important Note about 6:00 PM Mass on December 23:

We will not be offering the 6:00 PM Mass on December 23 so that we can ready the church for Christmas. All other Masses are unaffected.

● Keep Christ (and Mass!) in Christmas: As we begin to make

plans for Christmas, we’ve posted the Mass times on the front cover and on our website. It will be great to spend this very holy day together. Please invite your family and friends to be with us!

May God continue to bless us on this Advent journey. –Fr. Mike

Praise, Worship & Adoration!

On Monday, December 17,

from 7:00—8:15 PM, Deacon Allen will host an evening of praise and

worship with the opportunity to adore Christ in the Eucharist. Fr. Mike

2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

RON ROLHEISER

John the Baptist tries to prepare the way for Jesus by calling people to repentance: “Repent for the kingdom if heaven is near.” Whatever else that means, it includes the idea that one of the best ways we can prepare for Christmas is by making a good, honest, searing confession. To repent means to confess our sins.

This notion has fallen out of favor. The idea of confession is very much challenged today. At a practical level, less and less people are in fact going to confession. The old line-ups at the confessional box are becoming shorter and shorter. As well, more and more people are challenging, theoretically, the idea of sacramental confession. Arguments against it take many forms: “I don’t find it meaningful!” “It’s too privatized!” “There isn’t any need to do this to have one’s sins forgiven! God doesn’t need our mediation.” “It gives undue power to the priest!” “This is an affair between God and myself.” “It’s adolescent!” “The priests don’t have time to do it properly.”

Whatever the objection, and there are many, less and less people are going to confession.

This is an unfortunate development because private confession is one of the pillars of the spiritual life. At a certain point in one’s growth, there is no progress without it. Why? Why confession? Why the need to tell ones sins to a priest? Surely the radical mercy and forgiveness of God are not contingent upon telling our sins to a priest? Surely God’s mercy cannot be controlled by or limited to one prescribed ritual? In both scripture and church tradition it is clear that our sins are forgiven through sincerity of conscience and through touching the body of Christ (and this has many forms). The Christian community itself is the radical sacrament of reconciliation and God’s mercy can never be tied down to just one vehicle of grace. So why confession?

Simply put, confession is the sacrament of the mature and one grows mature by confessing one’s sins. Mature people face themselves and apologize explicitly – and people grow mature by apologizing. The critics of the sacrament of reconciliation are right in saying that God is not tied down to one vehicle as an avenue for the forgiveness of sins. They are wrong however when they denigrate the importance of private confession. One may not have to confess one’s sins explicitly to another human being to have them forgiven, but one does have to confess them explicitly if he or she hopes to live a transparent life, free of addictions, rationalization, and dark skeletons in the closet.

“You are as sick as your sickest secret!” That’s an axiom popular among people working in 12-step programs. They know the truth of that through personal experience. They also know that until one faces oneself, in searing honesty, before another human being and there acknowledges openly his or her sins, there will always be addictions, rationalization, and lack of real transparency. It has taken us a long time to understand the nature of addictive behavior and even longer to learn how to deal with it. One of the things we have learned, and this is a pivotal and non-negotiable step in every 12-step program, is that there has to be an open, honest, and searing admission of sin, face to face, before another human being. Without this, at a certain point, all real growth stops. The church has always had its own version of this. We called it confession, the sacrament of reconciliation.

It can of course still be argued: Why before a priest? In the letter of James in the New Testament, we are encouraged simply to confess our sins to each other. So why a priest? Because a priest symbolically represents the whole community. In confessing to a priest, we are, in a manner of speaking, confessing to the entire community. A friend of mine is fond of saying that sacramental confession, as presently practiced, is an unhappy compromise, far from ideal. That is correct, though not in the way my friend thinks. We owe our confession to the whole community (since it is the entire community that is wounded by our sin) and the ideal way to confess would be to go in front of a packed church on a Sunday morning and begin our confession be saying: “Bless me community – for I have sinned!”

Confession is not so much about having one’s sins forgiven as it is about coming to maturity within the community and being able to live a transparent life, free of dark secrets, addictions, and rationalization.

The Baptist’s message is as true today as it was 2000 years ago. To make straight the path for the coming of the Savior, to make a proper advent, to prepare ourselves to have Christ born in our lives, we need to undergo a baptism for the remission of sin. In simple talk, that means, among other things, making a searing, honest, open, confession. Used with permission of the author. Adore and Worship

An Evening of Praise, Worship and Adoration Monday, December 17

7:00—8:15 PM

The truth of the matter is that the holidays are an

incredibly busy time. The gifts, the parties, the baking, the family—or perhaps the absence of these things—can make the season stressful and chaotic. Wouldn’t it

be a great to carve out a few minutes to re-focus our hearts on what the coming of Jesus really means?

If you are looking for an oasis of calm amid the holiday rush, join us for this spirit-filled evening of prayer and song that will renew and enliven your faith

as we wait in joyful hope for the One who is the cause of our joy, and Who is coming soon.

Let’s Go

Christmas

Caroling!

Please join us for an old fashioned caroling experience. We will gather

on Monday, December 10 at 6:30 PM in the

Narthex of the church. As we walk the close-by neighborhood and offer our songs to willing listeners, we will gift them with candy canes. After warming the

hearts of our neighbors, we will return to the narthex and warm our noses and toes while enjoying hot chocolate and cookies. We can promise easy to read

music sheets and a truly enjoyable time, so please plan to join us and sing along. All are welcome – adults and children too. We look forward to seeing

you there!

Campaign Update

We are at 94% of our goal!

$2,270,000 Thank You St. Hubert!

Can I Still Make a Pledge? Yes! Pledge Cards are available in the narthex by the

sign with the thermometer, or in the parish office. We’re almost to our goal, so your pledge would be very welcomed and needed. Thank you to all those who

have made a pledge and those still considering it. Working together, we’re reaching our goal! Does it Matter Which Envelope I Use? No. For those ready to make contributions toward your pledge through the collection basket, it’s fine to use either the white envelope that you receive with your

statement, or to use the blue envelopes in the monthly envelope packet. Either one is good. Please note: To complicate matters, our envelope provider did not include the blue envelopes with the December envelopes. They should be back in the monthly packets again in January.

2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

How can St. Hubert Parishioners share

in the RCIA Ministry?

There are several ways in which St. Hubert Parishioners

can relate to, view, or be affected by the RCIA

ministry. They are the following:

Evangelization. In the 1970's, Pope Paul VI stated in

an important Church document that evangelization is

the single most important activity of the Church. The

RCIA is an important form in which this evangelizing

role of the Church is carried out, but also emphasizes to

us that we also have an important responsibility to, and

role in, evangelizing others for Christ.

Being Catholic. Because the RCIA ministry deals

specifically with initiating or receiving adults into the

Catholic faith, it can stimulate or encourage us, as

Catholics, to consider more deeply what it means to be

Catholic, and perhaps lead us to a renewed study of

what our Catholic faith is all about.

Community. Seeing individuals at Mass who are

participating in the RCIA initiation faith journey as they

join in its various Rites, or simply being aware of such

people, reminds us of the importance to us of our

Catholic Christian Community as we welcome these

individuals to our faith and parish life.

Ministry. As Catholics, we parishioners can have a

direct role in the RCIA by serving as sponsors to those

participating in the initiation faith journey. If you are

interested in serving in this most important ministry role,

please call Marie at 847-885-7700, ext. 124 or email

her at [email protected].

History and Traditions. Finally, the RCIA reminds us of

the long, two-thousand-year history of our Church and

the traditions it has developed. Much of what you see

in the RCIA today had developed in the Church by the

third and fourth centuries, some 1,700 years ago.

On Sunday December 9th we celebrate The Rite of Welcome and Acceptance

at the 9:00 Mass

A little history…. This is the first of the public rituals

celebrated in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process. The Rite of Acceptance into the order of Catechumens (for unbaptized Catechumens) and

the Rite of Welcome (for baptized adult candidates preparing to celebrate Confirmation and Eucharist in the Catholic Church). An important moment in the Rite

is when each candidate is asked if they are ready to accept the Gospel Way of Life. Their affirmation is a public expression of their intention to follow the

way of Jesus Christ. The candidates will be marked by the sign of the cross by Fr. Mike and their sponsors. With this ancient mark, they are claimed

for Christ.

As the assembled Church, we celebrate this ritual by blessing our Inquirers, listening to them, praying for them, giving evidence of the spirit of our Christian

community, inviting them into our hearts, and passing on to them our beliefs, traditions, and all that we hold sacred and cherish. Please keep our

Catechumens and Candidates in CMI and RCIA in your thoughts and prayers in the coming months.

Soon we will post photos and bios of our new candidates and catechumens in CMI and RCIA on the

kiosk of the Narthex.

A Note from the Business Office

GIFTS OF THANKS Our parishioners are extremely generous. In addition to on-going donations of time, service, and helping those in need, some also ask how they can help give

back to St. Hubert with additional financial help. In addition to the regular ways of giving, there are some short-term and long-term methods that some

parishioners have used in the past, but are not always immediately known. As the holiday season and end of the year approaches, here are a few

different vehicles some people have used for their charitable giving.

Tax Efficient Ideas Please be sure to consult your tax accountant or financial advisors in regard to the effect of these ideas based on your individual income tax situation.

● Gifts from an IRA. If you are over 70-1/2, you

must take Minimum Required Distributions from your IRA or pay a stiff penalty on the amount not taken. Funds transferred from the IRA directly to

the parish by check or wire transfer are considered Qualified Charitable Distributions, which may be excluded from taxable income on

the Federal and State of Illinois income tax returns up to $100,000 annually.

● Gifts of Appreciated Stock. These may be tax advantageous when it comes to capital gains.

The parish works through the Archdiocese of Chicago to accept gifts of stock or other

securities. If this is of interest, please contact our

parish business manager, Teresa McCutchan, for more information.

Other Charitable Vehicles ● Matching Gifts. Parishioners and friends of the

parish can double their gift to St. Hubert if their

employer has a matching gift program. Contact your employer’s HR or benefits manager to learn more.

● Special Donations. If you would like to make a

special end-of-the-year donation, you can do so through the regular collections at Mass, electronically through Give Central at

givecentral.org, through the mail, or dropping off a donation at the parish offices. The amounts received will be included on the contribution

report you receive at year end.

Find other suggestions and ways to give on our website: sainthubert.org. Click on the button: “Ways to Give”.

Exciting News! You can receive a 75 Percent

Illinois State Income Tax Credit and Help Students of St. Hubert School! Here’s how….

Matching Gift Program A group of generous donors have agreed to pool their resources and offer a 2-for-1 matching gift program to schools run by the Archdiocese of

Chicago. For every dollar designated to a qualifying school through Empower Illinois between December 1, 2018 and February 28, 2019, the school will

receive two dollars in matching funds! The donations are capped at $100,000 per school.

Donors who would like to receive the tax credit for their 2018 taxes should begin the process prior to December 14, 2018 to ensure that they have enough

time to make their gift by December 31, 2018.

For more information please visit www.archchicago.org/tcs or call 312-534-2617.

General Program There is still time to apply for a 2018 Illinois tax credit and donate to a Scholarship Granting

Organization. Visit www.archchicago.org/tcs to learn more, or contact [email protected] or 312-534-2617.

You can receive a 75 percent Illinois state income tax credit for donating to needs-based scholarships

through the Illinois tax credit scholarship program. Visit www.archchicago.org/tcs to learn more, or contact [email protected] or 312-534-2617.

Support current and future students of St. Hubert while receiving a 75 percent state tax credit through

the Illinois tax credit scholarship program. Please remember to designate St. Hubert School when making your donation. Visit www.archchicago.org/tcs to learn more, or contact [email protected] or

312-534-2617. You can provide a Catholic school education to a

current or future child of St. Hubert while also receiving a state tax credit yourself. The Invest in Kids Act is different from regular charitable giving to

St. Hubert School or another organization. Visit archchicago.org/tcs to learn why and how to access a step-by-step guide to the program.

Domestic Violence Can Increase during the Holiday Season

This year, as you hang the twinkling lights and decorate your mantel with sprigs of holly, remember that not everyone has gotten the message that it’s a season of peace. Unfortunately, the holidays can be an even more dangerous time than normal for those at risk for domestic violence.

From the financial stress of gift buying to an overall increase in alcohol consumption, to a flurry of emotions and other stresses that accompany a plethora of family togetherness time, there are many reasons why the chance of intimate partner violence can increase during the holidays.

What can you do? If you’re currently with an abusive partner, reach out to a trained domestic violence advocate—Call the Illinois helpline at 877-863-6338. You don’t need to figure out an escape plan—you can simply call to talk. Of course, if you are in immediate danger, call 911.

If you suspect someone in your life is the victim of an abusive partner, notice red flags, such as bruises, possessiveness, rigid gender roles, and deliberately humiliating one’s partner in front of others, you might be called upon to support a victim, If so, it is advised that you be non-judgmental but supportive. Don’t badmouth the abuser. Sometimes when word gets back to the abuser that a friend or family member is asking questions about the abuse, they could be putting themselves in danger. You can also call the Illinois helpline at 877-863-6338 to get advice as to how to properly help the abused individual.
