TIME The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel, it will be “a year acceptable to the Lord.” And Jesus surely didn’t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the “arrival” of God’s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the peo-ple gathered with solemnity to hear God’s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, “Today is holy . . . do not be sad, and do not weep.” The “year acceptable to the Lord” is this year. The day that is “holy” is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God’s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God’s word.

EL TIEMPO Los días de fiesta ya pasaron, el año se nos viene encima. ¿Y qué clase de año será? De acuerdo con las palabras de Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy, será “el año de la gracia del Señor”. Y Jesús con seguridad no se refería solamente a los próximos trescientos se-senta y cinco días cuando hablaba a la gente en ese tiempo. El anuncio de la “llegada” de la gracia de Dios lo hizo Jesús para todos los tiempos, para cada año. De manera similar, leemos hoy en Nehemías cómo la gente se reunía con solemnidad a escuchar la Pala-bra de Dios como si fuera la primera vez. Escucha-ban y luego se postraban con el rostro en la tierra y lloraban. Pero el profeta decía: “Este día está dedica-do al Señor… no estén tristes”. El “año de la gracia del Señor” es este año. El día “dedicado al Señor” es hoy. El tiempo de escuchar es ahora. ¿Qué clase de año tendrás? ¿Qué clase de día? La ayuda de Dios siempre está aquí. Lo que haces cada día será santo y aceptable al Señor solamente si escuchas y practicas la palabra de Dios.

EMBER DAYS

In Bishop Provost’s recent decree on prayer and worship that went into effect on January 1, one of the practices that is being revived in our diocese is the practice of Em-ber Days. Unless you are over the age of 60, you probably have no memory of Ember Days or other similar customs. Here is some explanation provided by Very Rev. Ruben Buller, Director of the Office of Worship for the Diocese of Lake Charles.

What are “Ember Days”? They were established for the universal church in the 11th Century by Pope St. Gregory VII. They were called ‘Quartuor Tempora”, a Latin phrase meaning “four times”. The word “ember” is considered to be a corruption of the Latin phrase. Pope St. Gregory established the four periods of fasting to sanctify the year and ask God’s bless-ings, thank Him for His blessing (especially tied to the harvest), and become aware of the need for moderation and temperance.

How are Ember Days established annually? They are calculated on the Wednesday, Friday, and Satur-day following: a) The First Sunday of Lent b) Pentecost Sunday c) The Feast of the Triumph of the Holy Cross (September 14) and d) The Memorial of St. Lucy (Dec. 13). In 2019, the Ember Days are: March 13, 15, 16. June 12, 14, 15. September 18, 20, 21. December 18, 20, 21.

Why are the Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays chosen? The choice of Wednesday, Friday, and Saturdays is an ancient custom that goes back to the Patristic Era. Many Church Fathers speak about fasting on Fridays (in associ-ation with the death of Christ) and Saturdays (in associa-tion with the rest of Christ in the tomb). The early Church also venerated Wednesdays as a day of Penance. In the Didache, the author says that Christians are to fast and abstain on Wednesdays and Fridays.

What is the emphasis and/or purpose of the Em-ber Days? Primarily, the focus of the life of the Christian is the glori-fication of God. In prayer, the Christian is to thank God for His bounty. In specific the Ember Days were tied to Roman rituals related to harvest and planting. Historical-ly, the association to harvest cycle is as follows: 1) Spring – the re-birth of nature (related to the Resurrection) 2) Summer – prayers for a bountiful harvest of the wheat crops (related to the Holy Eucharist and the Body of Christ) 3) Autumn – prayers for a bountiful harvest of the grape (related to the Holy Eucharist and the Blood of Christ) 4) Winter – prayers for the sowing of the fields (related to the wheat that is planted).

What kind of fasting is required on Ember Days? Traditionally, the fasting of Ember Days is different from Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. For Ember Days, the practice is to have two smaller meals and one regular sized meal all the Ember Days, meat can be eaten on the Wednesdays and Saturdays of Ember Days, but meat is to be abstained from on Fridays of Ember Days. In our Diocese, many of our parishioners still have ties to the land and seasons. Thus, the Ember Days’ original meaning and cycle is not totally lost on our area.

DIAS DE ASCUAS En el reciente decreto del Obispo Provost sobre la oración y la adoración que entró en vigencia el 1ro de enero, una de las prácticas que se está reavivando en nuestra diócesis es la práctica de los días de Ascuas. A menos que usted tenga más de 60 años de edad, usted probablemente no recuerda los días de Ascuas u otras costumbres similares. Aquí hay una explicación proporcionada por el muy Reverendo Rubén Bu-ller, Director de la Oficina de Adoración para la Diócesis de Lake Charles. ¿Que son los “Días de Ascuas”? Fueron establecidos por la Iglesia universal en el siglo XI por el Papa San Gregorio VII. Ellos fueron llamados 'Quartuor Tempora", una frase latina que significa "Cuatro Veces". La elección del miércoles, viernes y sábados es una costum-bre antigua que se remonta a la era Patristic. Muchos padres de la iglesia hablan de ayunar los viernes (en asociación con la muerte de Cristo) y los sábados (en asociación con los res-tos de Cristo en la tumba). La Iglesia primitiva también vene-raba los miércoles como un día de penitencia. En el Didache, el autor dice que los cristianos deben ayunar y abstenerse los miércoles y los viernes. ¿Cuál es el énfasis y/o el propósito de los días de As-cuas? Principalmente, el enfoque de la vida del cristiano es la glori-ficación de Dios. En la oración, el cristiano debe agradecer a Dios por su generosidad. Tradicionalmente, el ayuno de los días de Ascuas es diferente del miércoles de ceniza y el Viernes Santo. Para los días de Ascuas, la práctica es de tener dos comidas más pequeñas y una comida de tamaño regular todos los días de Ascuas, la carne se puede comer los miércoles y los sábados de los días de Ascuas, pero se debe abstener la carne los viernes de los días de Ascuas. En nuestra Diócesis, muchos de nuestros feligreses todavía tienen lazos con la tierra y las estaciones. ST. GABRIEL PROJECT

This project gives emotional, material, and spiritual sup-port for pregnant women, babies and their families in need. People who need this assistance can fill out the project forms in the Parish office. Those who want to assist with monetary donations, diapers, wipes, new baby clothes can bring their donations to the Parish office at Saint Henry.

Call forth those you have chosen to spread the Gospel message, and help them to freely respond to a life of ser-vice in the Church. May the parents and families of our parish support and encourage our young men and women to search for, follow and answer the call of God in their lives. AMEN.
