GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME Entrance hymn

ift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name.

Come let us follow where our Captain trod, our King victorious, Christ the Son of God:

O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, as thou hast promised, draw us unto thee:

Set up thy throne, that earth’s despair may cease beneath the shadow of its healing peace:

For thy blest cross which doth for all atone creation’s praises rise before thy throne:

Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name.

TEXT: George William Kitchin (1827–1912), and Michael Robert Newbolt (1874–1956); MUSIC: ‘Crucifer’, Sydney Hugo Nicholson (1875–1947).

Confession & absolution Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled and wandered far off.

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s forgiveness.

erciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have

not loved you with our whole heart, we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

lmighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith, pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all

goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collects for the Fifth Sunday in Lent Let us pray.

We pray in silence.

GOD, our Redeemer, in our weakness we have failed to be your messengers of forgiveness and hope: renew us by your Holy Spirit, that we may follow your commands and proclaim your reign of love; through

Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

lmighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent: Create and make in us

new and contrite hearts, that we worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Old Testament

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah.

he days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the

covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt — a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the LORD’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Jeremiah 31·31–34

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm herewithal shall a young man cleanse his way : even by ruling himself after thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee :

O let me not go wrong out of thy commandments. Thy words have I hid within my heart : that I should not sin against thee.

Blessed art thou, O Lord : O teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I been telling : of all the judgements of thy mouth. I have had as great delight in the way of thy testimonies : as in all manner of riches. I will talk of thy commandments : and have respect unto thy ways. My delight shall be in thy statutes : and I will not forget thy word.

Psalm 119·9–16, In quo corriget?; MUSIC: plainsong psalm tone III, with the 4th ending.

Epistle A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews.

o also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten

you’; as he says also in another place, ‘You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek’. the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. About this we have much to say that is hard to explain, since you have become dull in understanding. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic elements of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food; for everyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is unskilled in the word of righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, for those whose faculties have been trained by practice to distinguish good from evil.

Hebrews 5·5–14

Gospel

OW AMONG THOSE WHO WENT UP TO WORSHIP AT THE FESTIVAL were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus’. Philip went and told Andrew;

then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour.

‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say — “Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again’. The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to him’. Jesus answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

E BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the people Let us pray to the Father through his Son who suffered on the cross for the world’s redemption.

Fill with your Spirit Christ’s broken body, the Church. We pray for Kay our Archbishop, for bishops Jeremy and Kate, and for Archbishop Justin of Canterbury, on the eighth anniversary of his installation as first among equals of the bishops of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Give to Christian people everywhere a deep longing to take up the cross and to understand its mysterious glory. By the Saviour’s cross and passion,

Lord, save us and help us.

Bless those who lead the Church’s worship at this solemn time. We pray for the life and ministry of this cathedral church: for the Dean and all who work and worship here, and especially for our services of Holy Week and Easter. We also pray for all throughout the world who join us online for our services, giving thanks for a year of broadcasts and especially for Simon Day, the audio-visual

technician. In the preaching of the word and the celebration of the sacraments draw your people close to you. By the Saviour’s cross and passion,

Lord, save us and help us.

Strengthen those among us who are preparing for baptism, together with their teachers, sponsors and families: for Ross, Shirley, Tara, Rachael, Grace, Andrew, Luke, and Marietjie. Teach them what it means to die and rise with Christ and prepare them to receive the breath of his Spirit. By the Saviour’s cross and passion,

Lord, save us and help us.

Look in your mercy upon the world you loved so much that you sent your Son to suffer and to die. Especially, we pray for mercy for this weary world under the burden of pandemic disease. We continue to pray for the people of Myanmar amidst a military coup. This Harmony Day, we give thanks for the great diversity of ethnicity, culture and language in our church and community. Strengthen those who work to share the reconciliation won at such a cost upon the cross. By the Saviour’s cross and passion,

Lord, save us and help us.

Bring healing by the wounds of Christ to all who are weighed down by pain and injustice, especially for [those who are named]. Help the lonely and the betrayed, the suffering and the dying, to find strength in the companionship of Jesus, and in his passion to know their salvation. By the Saviour’s cross and passion,

Lord, save us and help us.

Welcome into paradise all who have left this world in your friendship, especially [those who are named]. According to your promises, bring them with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Ss Patrick and George, Thomas Cranmer, and all your saints to share in all the benefits of Christ’s death and resurrection. By the Saviour’s cross and passion,

Lord, save us and help us.

Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

THE MINISTRY OF THE SACRAMENT Greeting of peace

Christ has reconciled us to God in one body by the cross. We meet in his name and share his peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory hymn

nd now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary’s tree,

and having with us him that pleads above, we here present, we here spread forth to thee, that only offering perfect in thine eyes, The one true, pure, immortal sacrifice.

Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo, between our sins and their reward, we set the Passion of thy Son our Lord.

And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so aweful and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill: in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us nevermore to part with thee.

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you.

And also with you. Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

LL GLORY AND HONOUR, be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God.

We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary > and lived as one of us.

He was tempted in every way as we are, yet he did not sin.

By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people.

By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to walk in the way of his love.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

Sanctus & Benedictus anctus, sanctus, sanctus Holy, holy, holy Dominus Deus Sabaoth; Lord God of Hosts;

pleni sunt cœli et terra gloria tua: heaven and earth are full of your glory: hosanna in excelsis. hosanna in the highest.

enedictus qui venit Blessed is he who comes in nomine Domini: in the name of the Lord:

hosanna in excelsis. hosanna in the highest.

ERCIFUL GOD, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

deacon Let us proclaim the mystery of faith.

The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray.

UR FATHER IN HEAVEN, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

We who are many are one body For we all share in the one bread.

Prayer of humble access e do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We

are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

your praise and glory. Amen.

Hymn of thanksgiving

e sing the praise of him who

died, of him who died upon the cross; the sinner’s hope let men deride, for this we count the world but loss.

2.Inscribed upon the cross we see in shining letters, ‘God is love’; he bears our sins upon the tree; he brings us mercy from above.

3.The cross! It takes our guilt away: it holds the fainting spirit up; it cheers with hope the gloomy day, and sweetens every bitter cup.

4.It makes the coward spirit brave, and nerves the feeble arm for fight; it takes its terror from the grave, and gilds the bed of death with light:

5.The balm of life, the cure of woe, the measure and the pledge of love, the sinner’s refuge here below, the angels’ theme in heaven above.

TEXT: Thomas Kelly (1769–1855); MUSIC: ‘Bow Brickhill’, Sydney Hugo Nicholson (1875–1947).
