ST. GEORGE’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH NEWSLETTER
Belleville, Illinois
The Dragon St. George’s Mission: To Love and Serve the Lord and our Neighbors as Ourselves
Alleluia! The Lord is Risen!
It is difficult to express how joyful and uplifting I find our Holy Week and Easter services. The ringing of bells, the wonderful music, the return of Alleluias, and joyous shouts of “Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!” all witness to the faith in Jesus at St. George’s!
Having Bishop Ed Salmon with us on Palm Sunday, walking the Way of the Cross with St. Mark and St. Luke Roman Catholic, sharing our worship with St. Mark Lutheran on Good Friday and St. Michael’s Episcopal for the Easter Vigil, all came together to support our observances of Holy Week and our joy on Easter Sunday.
(The attendances on both Palm Sunday and Easter were very good, with 246 coming to Easter services, up almost 10% over the 227 who attended last year.)
Many thanks to those who are so instrumental, year after year, in bringing about our liturgies, the “work of the people”. Special thanks to Nancy Ypma and the Choir and Choristers for their glorious music in celebration of the Risen Lord; to Nolan Haefner and our ushers; to our dedicated readers, chalice bearers, and acolytes - scheduled by Cindy Lynk, Margaret Blistain, and Tom Boschert; and to Duffy Walters and the Altar Guild, whose devotion and gifts prepared for all our services and beautified the church. I am also grateful to Deacon Jody for her ever-present assistance with liturgies, preaching on Good Friday, and preparing the Easter letter and bulletins as well.
Finally, thanks to Mae Scott for her enthusiastic ministry with our children and preparing our annual Easter Egg Hunt, and to Jim Sprinz and Aaron McNitt for their work getting the church buildings ready.
May God richly bless us during these 50 days of Easter!

FOOD PANTRY NEWS
Panera (the St. Louis Bread Company) has approved our Food Pantry as a recipient of its Day-end Dough-nation program. Panera gives its unsold bakery products to approved food pantries for distribution to the hungry. We are grateful to be able to take part in this program.
Participating requires picking up the unsold products every Saturday night at the downtown Belleville Bread Company just before 9:00 pm. We are assembling a list of volunteers and already have enough to ensure than no one will have to pick up more than once a month.
Would you be willing to help with this worthy project? This program will help our pantry feed more people, and feed them better. If you and a partner (it’s a lot of food for one person to carry) can drive once every few weeks, contact Betsy Rogers at 277-1406 or [email protected].

Cursillo Retreat June 19‐22Cursillo is an opportunity to grow in our Christian faith. Its goal is to equip Christians (18 years +) to lead a Christ-centered life and help spread the good news. The lay person-led weekend runs Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon, and includes talks, quiet reflection, song, group activities, worship, fun and fellowship! Additionally, there will be opportunities for spiritual counseling with clergy.
The cost of the weekend is $175, double occupancy. We are committed to making this opportunity available to everyone, and full and partial scholarships are available. If you cannot attend but would like to contribute towards scholarships, we are always in need of those donations.
Please pray for those on staff and our candidates, and if you are part of the Fourth Day community, stay tuned for ways of assisting even if you can't attend this time.
Applications and brochures are available in the church office. Please contact Bob Vaughn (624-1909 or [email protected]) or Dave Lavely (541-0771 or [email protected]) for more information or to find out about applying for scholarships.
Day Camp Dreamin’
This year the Franklin Neighborhood Community Association (FNCA) has scheduled their Summer Day Camp for June 11 to July 3. Each day runs 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm and offers recreational, educational, and life skills programs. For about a third of the campers campers, the day will start at 10:00 am with tutoring.
Each camper is charged a $40 fee for the seven-week session. (The actual cost per camper is $200.) FNCA Director Al Wunderlich writes, “If the family cannot pay due to financial reasons, the fee is waived. In addition to camper scholarships and personnel costs, funds are needed for camp supplies, activities and busses for transportation.”
This May, as in past years, St. George’s Community Service Commission asks you to help “Send a Kid to Camp.” Envelopes for donations will be available at Sunday services. Let’s help give 100 students something to look forward to during the last, long weeks of school!

Congratulations, Robin!
Robin Howard, a parishioner and Photography student at Southwestern Illinois College, joyfully entered two photographs for the Spring 2014 Student Show. The Awards ceremony took place at the Schmidt Art Center on Maundy Thursday (Robin wasn’t there as she was singing the beautiful communion anthem with St. George’s Choir under Nancy Ypma’s direction).
Robin’s July 2013 photograph Sesquicentennial Crossings, an image of Eade’s Bridge, the new Stan Musial/Veteran’s Memorial Bridge and the Mississippi River in flood stage printed on metal, won the Presidential Purchase Award and Gateway East Artist Guild Award. Her second photograph Color of Spring, a spring 2013 dogwood blossom printed on canvas, was purchased for President Georgia Costello’s home.
Over the past two years Robin has entered four other photographs and all were accepted and hung in the Schmidt Center. She also had two photographs hung in the Soulard Art Gallery fall of 2013 and spring of 2014.
You can see Robin’s photos and the rest of the entries in the 2014 SWIC Student Art Show at the Schmidt Art Center through May 15th.
A dear friend of mine for 37 years, Fr. Alan died Easter Tuesday of complications of pneumonia. He had suffered declining health for some time before retiring from the largest parish church in the Diocese, Emmanuel Memorial Church in Champaign, where he served for 26 years.
The Requiem Mass for Fr. Alan was a glorious celebration of our Lord’s Resurrection, with Bishop Martins as preacher and celebrant. The church was packed for this service, and 15-20 clergy present.
Fr. Alan was a single priest and a very private person. He had a droll sense of humor, deep intelligence and wisdom, and he loved serving God’s people in the Episcopal Church. His pastoral priestly vocation was evident to a great many who came in contact with him as was his life of prayer. He was a longtime member of the Society of St. John the Evangelist.
I got to know him my first year of seminary at Nashotah House in Wisconsin. Alan and I were both assigned as our chore the cleaning of the Library. So while scrubbing toilets, we would let loose with hymns we knew from the Salvation Army and Alan’s former Methodist Church. Alan’s father was a longtime Methodist minister serving in South Dakota and Iowa. Alan received his BA from Morningside Methodist College in Iowa before shifting to the Episcopal Church and Nashotah House.
During very difficult times for both of us during the Episcopal Church’s “troubles”, we noted how many of our classmates were leaving the church he and I both loved. The last 30 years have been a very trying time for almost any faithful priest or bishop, with all the social wars around us affecting the Episcopal Church and the so-called main line Protestant churches.
The Rev. Canon Alan Herbst, SSJE, RIP
Throughout all these times, Alan remained a deeply loving parish priest, serving first at two churches in Iowa before being called to Emmanuel. Those who knew him well knew of the severe depression and other maladies he suffered, becoming more and more withdrawn the last several years of his life. (He winked at me one time and labeled himself a confirmed dipsomaniac!)
I, and a few others, stayed continually in touch with him, and as he reached out to me pastorally when I was in need, I did to him likewise, knowing what can affect a priest these days.
It is rare for a priest to have such a delightful long-time friend such as Alan with whom to be completely oneself. I shall miss him. Father Alan was 60 when he died.

Coffee Hour Coordinator ‐ the Coordinator takes care of scheduling our Sunday morning volunteers and stocking supplies. If you are interested in this ministry of hospitality, please call or email the church office or contact our retiring coordinator Stacy Miller ([email protected]).
Sunday School Celebration
Hard to believe, but summer is almost here. We have had a very successful year with our new Sunday School Coordinator Mae Scott and using the Godly Play curriculum in our classrooms. Everyone is invited to help celebrate Sunday School and to let our students and teachers know how much we appreciate them with our Annual Potluck Breakfast on Sunday, May 18.
Bring something to share – fruit, pastry, eggs, etc. – and join us in the parish hall at 9:00 am. We have lots of fun, good food, and an opportunity to support our children and thank the wonderful people who minister to them throughout the year.
A Godly Play story . . .
I am so fortunate to be part of the Godly Play program at St. George’s. I learn a lot in teaching each lesson, however, until I taught a Faces of Easter lesson I didn’t realize quite how much the children were learning too. In this lesson, several plaques illustrated with the face of Jesus tell the story of his life and death. After the storyteller talks about each plaque, the children are invited to find something in the room to help tell more of the story. I didn’t know what the children would find or if they would participate, but I was amazed by their insight. For example, one child brought the church calendar (shaped like a clock), put the hands on Christmas, and placed it beside the plaque of Jesus’ birth. One child brought a pitcher and another brought the bottle of oil and placed them by the plaque of Jesus’ baptism. Another child brought the cross and placed it by the plaque of the last supper because, according to her, Jesus would soon die on the cross. Even one of our youngest members brought a Wiseman and placed it by the plaque of Jesus curing the blind man (maybe a more meaningful choice than it would first appear).
This was a very special lesson for me. It is clear the children are developing a deeper understanding of the stories, lessons, and materials brought to them through Godly Play.
