GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME Entrance hymn

erusalem the golden, with milk and honey blest,

beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice opprest. I know not, O I know not what joys await us there, what radiancy of glory, what bliss beyond compare.

2.They stand, those halls of Sion, conjubilant with song, and bright with many an angel, and all the martyr throng; the Prince is ever with them, the daylight is serene, the pastures of the blessèd are decked in glorious sheen.

3.There is the throne of David; and there, from care released, the shout of them that triumph, the song of them that feast; and they, who with their leader have conquered in the fight, for ever and for ever are clad in robes of white.

4.O sweet and blessèd country, the home of God’s elect! O sweet and blessèd country that eager hearts expect! Jesu, in mercy bring us to that dear land of rest; who art, with God the Father and Spirit, ever blest.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Today, the Sixth Sunday of Easter, is traditionally observed as Rogation Sunday when we give thanks and pray for the created order and for human creativity. And on this International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we recognise God’s good creation in the diversity of human life and expression. Wherever and whoever we are, we meet in the name of Christ, who is present in every time and place as our friend and brother.

Christ is risen. Alleluia! He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

lmighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the

inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession & absolution Christ our Passover Lamb has been offered for us, therefore we come to celebrate the festival.

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, with a sincere and a true heart.

Like Mary at the empty tomb, we fail to grasp the wonder of your presence. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Like the disciples behind locked doors, we are afraid to be seen as your followers. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

Like Thomas in the upper room, we are slow to believe. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

lmighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith, pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all

goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect for the Sixth Sunday of Easter Let us pray.

We pray in silence.

GOD, you have prepared for those who love you joys beyond our understanding: pour into our hearts such love for you, that, loving you above all else, we may obtain your promises that exceed all we can

desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD First lesson

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

hen Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, ‘Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. For as I went through the city and

looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, “To an unknown god”. What therefore you worship as un-known, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him — though indeed he is not far from each one of us. For “In him we live and move and have our being”; as even some of your own poets have said,

“For we too are his offspring”. Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.’

Acts 17·22–31

Psalm praise our God, ye people :

and make the voice of his praise to be heard; For thou, O God, hast proved us :

thou also hast tried us, like as silver is tried. O come hither, and hearken, all ye that fear God :

and I will tell you what he hath done for my soul. I called unto him with my mouth :

and gave him praises with my tongue. If I incline unto wickedness with mine heart :

the Lord will not hear me. But God hath heard me :

and considered the voice of my prayer. Praised be God, who hath not cast out my prayer :

nor turned his mercy from me.

TEXT: Psalm 66·7, 9, 14–18, Benedicite populi Deo nostro; MUSIC: double Anglican chant in C major, James Turle (1802–82).

Epistle A reading from the First Letter of Peter.

inally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but,

on the contrary, repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called — that you might inherit a blessing. For

‘Those who desire life and desire to see good days, let them keep their tongues from evil and their lips from speaking deceit; let them turn away from evil and do good; let them seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.’

Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defence to anyone who demands from you an account of the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience

clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good con-duct in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing evil. For Christ also suf-fered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight people, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you — not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.

John 14·15–21

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Sermon Given by the Very Reverend Chris Chataway, the Dean.

Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

E BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the people We pray that our risen Saviour may fill us with the joy of his glorious and life-giving resurrection.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray for the life and ministry of this Cathedral Church, for Kay our Archbishop and all pastors as we care for God’s people, for the Church that, even though we cannot meet together, we might know God’s presence and do his will.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray for our world as it responds to the challenges of a global pandemic, giving thanks for healthcare workers, and praying for those places worst affected by disease.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

On this Rogation Sunday, we pray for a right stewardship of the resources of earth and ocean, giving thanks for the goodness of God’s creation.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray for God’s blessing upon human labour, for those stood down from work or made unemployed at this time, for families whose household income is under threat, for small businesses in difficulty, and for just employment practices and safe workplaces.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray for God’s blessing upon the ocean, rivers, creeks and lakes, for field and pasture, seed and feed, and for all who work in agriculture and fishery.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray to our creator God who has made all people beautifully in the divine image. On this International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we give thanks for the diversity of God’s good creation, and we pray for a greater love and welcome for people of different sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray that God may reveal the light of his presence to the sick, the weak, the dying, and the bereaved, that the healing wounds of the risen Christ might comfort and strengthen them, and all who are on our hearts this morning.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray that, according to the promises of Christ, all who have died in the faith of the resurrection may be raised on the last day.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE SACRAMENT Greeting of peace

We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory hymn

ord, enthroned in heavenly splendour

first-begotten from the dead, thou alone, our strong defender, liftest up thy people’s head. Alleluia, alleluia, Jesu, true and living bread.

2.Here our humblest homage pay we, here in loving reverence bow; here for faith’s discernment pray we, lest we fail to know thee now. Alleluia, alleluia, thou art here, we ask not how.

3.Though the lowliest form doth veil thee as of old in Bethlehem, here as there thine angels hail thee, branch and flower of Jesse’s stem. Alleluia, alleluia, we in worship join with them.

4.Paschal Lamb, thine offering, finished once for all when thou wast slain, in its fullness undiminished shall for evermore remain, Alleluia, alleluia, cleansing souls from every stain.

5.Life-imparting heavenly manna, stricken rock with streaming side, heaven and earth with loud hosanna worship thee, the Lamb who died, Alleluia, alleluia, risen, ascended, glorified!

Offertory prayer Having prepared the bread and wine, the priest prays

lessed are you, Lord God of all creation. Through your goodness we are united in sharing these gifts

though we are separated. Accept and use our offerings for your glory, for the healing of our world and for the service of your kingdom.

Blessed be God for ever.

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you.

And also with you. Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

LL GLORY AND HONOUR, be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son,

our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us.

By his death on the cross, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin, and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people.

And now we give you thanks that you raised him to life triumphant, and exalted him in glory.

By his victory over death, the reign of sin is ended, a new day has dawned, a broken world is restored and we are made whole once more.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

Sanctus anctus, sanctus, sanctus Holy, holy, holy Dominus Deus Sabaoth ; Lord God of Hosts;

pleni sunt cœli et terra gloria tua : heaven and earth are full of your glory: hosanna in excelsis. hosanna in the highest.

enedictus qui venit Blessed is he who comes in nomine Domini : in the name of the Lord:

hosanna in excelsis. hosanna in the highest.

Peace Mass, Bob Chilcott (b. 1955)

ERCIFUL GOD, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine,

and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

Deacon Let us proclaim the mystery of faith.

Michael Dudman (1938–94)

Renew us by your Holy Spirit unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise:

Michael Dudman (1938–94)

The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray.

UR FATHER IN HEAVEN, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread As this broken bread was once many grains, which have been gathered together and made one bread:

so may your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom.

Invitation to Spiritual Communion Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!

Before the priest receives Communion, he turns towards the camera, holding the bread and wine, and says

Christ is in or midst. He is and always will be.

As I take this holy sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, let us all feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

The priest encourages those watching to make their Spiritual Communion by repeating these words.

Come, Lord Jesus, dwell in me and send your Holy Spirit that I may be filled with your presence.

Communion motet ove divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down; fix in us thy humble dwelling;

all thy faithful mercies crown! Jesus thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation; enter every trembling heart.

2.Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit into every troubled breast! Let us all in thee inherit; let us find that second rest. Take away our bent to sinning; Alpha and Omega be; end of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty.

3.Come, Almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive; suddenly return and never, nevermore thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love.

4.Finish, then, thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be. Let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee; changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise.
