INSIDE THE 815... Dear Friends, I have written some helpful tips below to help us understand clearly what we will be facing two Sundays from now, when two holy days of obligations (Sunday and Christmas Day) will overlap each other. Because both have obligations attached to them, we will have to ful ill both. It is my hope that these will help you: 1. Basis for the double-header: “Sunday…must be observed in the universal church as the primordial holy day of obligation. The following days must also be observed: the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ…” (cf. Code of Canon Law, c. 1246, §1) a. In this case, 4th Sunday of Advent (Dec. 24) and Christmas (Dec. 25) are observed equally as holy days of obligation. 2. A Sunday is celebrated for 24 hours on the day itself from midnight to midnight or on the evening of the preceding day (known as the Vigil and has to be 4:00 p.m. onwards) – this is the time frame in which one can ful ill his obligation (c. 202, §1). 3. The same principle is also applied to a feast day/solemnity, especially if it is a holy day of obligation. (c. 1248, §1)

4. Applying the principles in Nos. 2 and 3, we can conclude that: a. On the Fourth Sunday of Advent, one may ful ill this obligation within 24 hours of Sunday itself or the previous evening on Saturday (4:00 p.m. onwards) b. On Christmas Day, which is alsoandalwaysa holy day of obligation, one may also ful ill this obliga-tion within 24 hours of Monday itself or the previous evening on Sunday (4:00 p.m. onwards) 5. The bottom line is: You may NOT choose the same mass for both obligations; i.e., it is not possi-

ble to ful ill both obligations with only one mass. 6. What is clear are these: a. Masses before 4:00 p.m. on Sunday will always be for the 4th Sunday of Advent. b. Masses from 12:00 midnight between Sunday and Monday and Monday itself will always be for Christmas Day. 7. But what about the masses on “Christmas Eve” (the masses that are scheduled at 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Sunday)? They fall on a Sunday but have the readings and texts for Christ-mas. a. Two possible options: i. You can attend one of these masses to ful ill the Sunday obligation but you’ll have to come back again at a later mass that evening/night or on Christmas Day to ful ill the Christmas obligation; OR, ii. You can attend one of these masses to ful ill the Christmas obligation but you’ll have to attend an earlier Sunday or previous Saturday mass to ful ill the Sunday obligation.

Perhaps the planner on the following page can be of help:

Page 4: St. Genevieve Catholic Church · -Dec. 10th, 7:00 pm (move gifts from church to the Emmaus Rm.) -Dec 15th, 4:00 pm (move gifts from of Ôice to the Family Center) God bless you and

It is not the text of the Mass that counts, but a ending a mass within the meframe (cf. Nos. 2 and 3) for comple ng the obliga-on.

UPDATE ON ST. JOSEPH CEMETERY MAUSOLEUM When the me comes, where will I be buried? Have I made plans for that? How will my loved ones know my wishes? These are ques ons that we will all have to answer one day. What would you do if something happened in your family tomorrow? We don't like to think about those things or much less discuss the sub-ject, but death is inevitable. Ge ng your burial space ahead of me is good family planning and makes good prac cal sense, especially now that St. Joseph Cemetery has a new mausoleum program. If you buy now, you have choices. There are three different types of doubles, inside or outside, six different levels, and also fami-ly units. There are different op ons for payment as well. If you wait un l later to purchase, the op ons will be limited. The moment you sign up you are covered. The main thing is that you have the oppor-tunity as husband and wife, and perhaps your en re family, to do your planning together in the privacy of your own home. Taking care of these plans now is a lot easier than to do so following a death. Representa ves from American Cemetery Consultants are now available to meet with you to answer ques ons about the new mausoleum and help you to choose the op on that is right for you. The number of crypts selected before construc on will determine the final size of the mausoleum. Spaces are reserved on a first come basis. Anyone wan ng informa on should either mail in the postage paid reply card from the brochure that was mailed to your home or call 985-400-2499.
