O Mary, give us a heart as beautiful, pure,

and spotless as yours. A heart like yours

so full of love and humility. May we be able to receive Jesus

as the bread of life, to love him as you loved him,

to serve him under the mistreated face of the poor.

We ask this through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

December 6, 2020 Month of the Immaculate Conception

    Dear friends in the Lord:

Soon our parishes will collect an offering for the Retirement Fund for Religious, an annual appeal that benefits some 30,000 senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests.

As Christians, we are called to "serve the Lord with gladness' (Ps 100:2). Our elderly religious offer a shining example of what it means to answer this call. During their days of active ministry, they worked tirelessly to build Catholic schools and hospitals, promote social justice, and embrace the neediest among us. In retirement, many continue in volunteer ministry, and all pray for the needs of our Church and world. Inspired by love, their service, past and present, is marked by joy and a deep desire to do the will of God.

As you may know, many religious communities find it increasingly difficult to provide for aging members. Most older religious worked for little or no pay. Today, their communities do not have enough retirement savings. At the same time, health-care costs continue to rise, and fewer members are able to serve in compensated ministry.

Your gift, which will be collected on December 13, provides vital funding for medications, nursing care, and more. It also helps religious congregations plan for future retirement needs, even as they continue to serve the People of God.

I am grateful to you, also, for your support of the Cardinal's Annual Stewardship Appeal which, in addition to other worthy causes, provides assistance to our retired archdiocesan priests at the St. John Vianney Clergy Residence in Riverdale.

I understand you are asked to support many worthy causes. I invite you only to give what you can. Most importantly, please pray for God's continued blessing on all our women and men religious. Rest assured, they are praying for you. To learn more about the collection and whom it supports, visit www.usccb.org/retiredreligious.

With gratitude and prayerful best wishes to all for a blessed Advent season, I am,

    Devotedly yours in Christ,

    Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan

We are pleased to announce that Catholic in Recovery has resumed weekly meetings on Thursdays at 7:30pm. We ask that all participants please wear masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines. Understanding the Creed II Last week we looked at one of the theological terms used in the newer translation of the Nicene Creed, the word “consubstantial.” This week we look at another one of these beautiful and profound words that describes the mystery of the Son of God becoming a man. The Creed reads, “…and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.” The word “incarnate” is a “big”, theological term that beautifully expresses the truth of the mystery of this holy season of Advent. The first thing to mention about this term is that, like the word consubstantial, it has a long history of use in the theology of the church and the Creed. A simple definition of this truth is “to represent in bodily form” or, as an adjective, “invested with a bodily form especially of a human body.” This term as applied to Christ refers to the truth that the Son of God was invested with a human body by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary. The Incarnation expresses the truth of how Jesus, the second person of the Blessed Trinity, became a man. In theological terms the Incarnation means that the one person, Jesus, has two natures. In the Incarnation he is fully human and fully divine. This truth of our faith is attested to in many places in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. The most obvious passage from Scripture is John 1:14, “And the Word became flesh - and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.” In the Catholic Encyclopedia we read, “The early forms of the creed all make profession of faith, not in one Jesus Who is the Son of God and in another Jesus Who is Man and was crucified, but ‘in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-begotten Son of God, Who became Man for us and was crucified.’ The forms vary, but the substance of each creed invariably attributes to one and the same Jesus Christ the predicates of the Godhead and of man.” In the Catechism of the Catholic Church we read a beautiful reflection about the effect of the Incarnation, ‘The Word became flesh to make us ‘partakers of the divine nature’: ‘For this is why the Word became man, and the Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God.’ ‘For the Son of God became man so that we might become God.’ ‘The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that he, made man, might make men gods.’” (CCC #460) Enjoy praying the new words of the Creed. Next week I will look at one final term used in the Apostles Creed.

Today the Church lights the second of the four candles on the Advent wreath. It is thought that the origins of the Advent wreath lie in the pagan customs of people in the far northern countries of Scandinavia – customs that originated long before the birth of Christ. Because they couldn’t do farm work outdoors in the winter, people brought into their homes the wheels of their wagons, decorated them with greens, put candles on them, and hung them from the ceiling on a wire. Then they would twirl them to become a glowing prayer to the god of light in this time of darkness. Christians later adapted this to celebrate the coming birth of the Light of the World.

Due to the overwhelming quantity and quality of merchandise that has been donated to the shop, we are unable to accept any further donations at this time. The storage space within the shop and in our storage shed is very limited and both areas are

currently filled to the brim! Donations will gladly be accepted again after the Christmas holiday.

We thank you for your cooperation.

The Clare’s Cove Christmas Sale is underway and will continue every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am-1pm up until Saturday, December 19th. Browse our beautiful selection of holiday items including gifts at Thrift Store prices.

St. Francis of Assisi is credited with spreading the popularity of the crèche. In 1223, Francis brought in a live donkey and ox, and held Christmas Mass at a manger, instead of an altar. By the end of the 18th century, nativity scenes began to appear in village squares and homes, as they became popular among the people.

Another custom that evolved from the crèche is the preparation of the manger, which originated in France. Children prepare soft bedding in the manger by using little pieces of straw as tokens of prayers and good works. Each night, the child puts in the crib one straw for each act of devotion or virtue performed throughout the day.

COVID 19 has changed things a little for our traditional Christmas gift collection for the less fortunate. There will be ornaments on our Giving Tree this year, but we will be collecting Target gift cards instead. This way the families can use at their discretion. Please discreetly write the amount of the gift card so that we can fairly distribute to those less fortunate. Gift cards can be placed in the red “Letters to Santa” collection box by the Giving Tree. Gift cards will be distributed on Sunday, 12/13/20 so the families have ample time to use them.

We are very grateful for your gift of $158.00 received in October 2020 which was requested to be used to provide relief to the people of Haiti. Your support is already making an impact in the lives of the poorest people in the western hemisphere who, in addition to all that they have historically faced, have recently been ravaged by hurricanes. Among other things, your gift will send truckloads of purified water, water purifying kits, and 200 buckets to those with no access to fresh water. Please keep the people in Haiti in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you again for your important gift. With Gratitude,

National Night of Prayer for Life Please join us at St. Francis of Assisi Church for The 31st National Night of Prayer for Life on Tuesday, December 8th. Mass will begin at 7:30pm followed by Exposition until 10:00pm. It was on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (then celebrated on December 9th) that Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas and the unborn, first appeared to St. Juan Diego. The National Night of Prayer for Life bridges these two feasts to honor Our Blessed Mother and to pray for the sanctity of all human life. This effort will help build the culture of life and civilization of love in our nation.
