Views from Fr. Larry Pichard, Pastor Next Sunday we have the special collection for African-American and Native-American Catholic Missions although this national collection sponsored by the USA Bishops has traditionally abbreviated the name to “Black and Indian Collection.”

This collection is very close to our hearts here at St. Francis. The third stained glass window from the choir presents St. Francis of Assisi stripping himself of his clothes and his wealth so that he could be totally poor and dedicate himself totally to the poor. According to our methodology in the bottom part of the window, we present a modern-day saint who lived that charism of St. Francis. We decided upon an American saint, in fact, the third native-born USA saint to be canonized. Katharine Drexel was born in 1858 into a wealthy family of Philadelphia. Although the family was rich, they were also very generous to the needy. While traveling in western United States with her family, young Katharine was moved by the tragic poverty of Native American Indians. Then as a lay woman she helped distribute some of the family funds to help them. When she and her family made a trip to see Pope Leo XIII, she asked him to send missionaries to Indian reservations, but he turned the tables on her by encouraging her to become a missionary to them. So, she did! In 1889 she entered the convent of the Sisters of Mercy in Pittsburg Wanting to do more as a brand new nun, she founded her own religious order, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, in 1891 with the expressed purpose of helping in Native American and African-American missions in the south and the southwest. Over the next decades she and her sisters established 60 mission schools for Native American Indians and African-Americans. Her sisters taught in those schools. Sister Katharine faced much opposition in founding the schools for African-Americans from segregationist legislatures which wanted to prevent white teachers from teaching in black schools and from groups like the KKK which threatened her with tar and feathers. How was she able to build and provide 60 schools? Over the years she had given up her inheritance of $15 million dollars to finance those missions; in today’s money that would be the equivalent of $400 million! She stripped herself of her wealth so that poor Americans could improve their lives socially and spiritually. Sister Katharine was canonized in the year 2000, and her feast day is March 3. Although we don’t have a window dedicated to Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, she was a Native-American Algonquin-Mohawk who against the wishes of her tribe accepted the Catholic Faith and was canonized as the first saint born in North America. Dying in 1680 she represents a courageous Native American loving Jesus Christ. Very interesting that the name Kateri is the Mohawk form of Catherine, and that Sister Katharine Drexel would one day dedicate herself to serving Native-Americans.

We are blessed with several Native-American parishioners, many African-American parishioners, and many African parishioners. Next Sunday, let us help our brother and sister Catholics who live in the missions of the United States.

El próximo domingo tenemos la colecta especial para las Misiones Católicas Afro-americanas y Nativo-americanas, a pesar de que esta colecta nacional es patrocinada por los obispos de Estados Unidos tradicionalmente es abreviada con el nombre de "Black and Indian Collection"

Esta colecta está muy cerca de nuestros corazones aquí en San Francisco. La tercera ventana del lado del coro nos presenta a San Francisco de Asís despojándose de su ropa y su riqueza para ser totalmente pobre y dedicarse completamente a los pobres. De acuer-do con nuestra metodología en la parte posterior de la ventana, pre-sentamos un santo de la era moderna que vivió el carisma de San Francisco. Escogimos a un santo de origen americano, de hecho, es el segundo santo nativo nacido en Estados Unidos canonizado. Catalina Drexel nació en 1858 en una familia adinerada en Filadelfia. La Hermana Catalina enfrentó mucha oposición al fundar las escuelas para afroamericanos de legislaturas segregacionistas, las cuales buscaban evitar que las maestras de raza blanca enseñaran en escuelas de raza negra y de grupos como Ku Klux Klan, que la amenazaron con torturarla.

¿Cómo fue capaz de construir y proveer a 60 escuelas? A través de los años ella renunció a su herencia de $15 millones de dólares para financiar las misiones; el equivalente de su dinero en el tiempo actual sería de ¡$400 millones¡ Ella se despojó de su riqueza para que los americanos pobres pudieran mejorar sus vidas social-mente y espiritualmente. Lunes Misericordiosos El Papa Francisco anunció el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, el cual inició el 8 de diciembre de 2015. El Papa Francisco ha pedido a cada parroquia realizar algo especial para a reflexionar sobre la misericordia, por lo que nosotros vamos a tener los “Lunes Misericordiosos" cada lunes durante la Cuaresma y hemos invitado a varios oradores misericordiosos de la Diócesis para hablar sobre temas relacionados con la misericordia. Por favor, únase a nosotros de 7 a 9 pm en inglés en la Iglesia y en español en la Capilla. Mercy Mondays Pope Francis announced the Jubilee Year of Mercy which began December 8, 2015. Pope Francis has

asked each Parish in the world to do something special to focus in upon mercy, so we at St. Francis will be

holding “Mercy Mondays” each Monday during Lent and have invited merciful speakers from the Diocese

to speak on topics relating to mercy. Please join us from 7-9pm in English in the Church and Spanish in the

Chapel. In the words of Bishop Farrell, “I want to encourage you to take this extraordinary Jubilee Year of

Mercy very seriously, allowing God’s mercy to renew and revitalize your faith and the faith of all people in

the Diocese of Dallas.”

RAYS OF SUNSHINE Due to the illness of our founder, Rays of Sunshine (RoS) was temporarily suspended but is now back. RoS was created as a minis-try for the Parishioners of St Francis to be able to give back to the Church and to God. It's a unique ministry in that we use your tal-ents to "match you up" with a parishioner in need. But first things first, we need to rebuild our volunteer list. PRO LIFE BABY BANKS Respect Life will distribute Baby Banks this weekend. Stop by the Great Hall and pick one up in the Foyer. Your previous donations have helped the pro-life movement tremendously in Tex-as. There has been a 31% drop in abortions in Texas over the last 5 years, translating into 50,000 babies being born. Proceeds will benefit Birth Choice, White Rose, and local women’s shelter, Ma-ter Felius. Please return the Banks the weekend of March 20th, in the Great Hall.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

VBS needs YOUR help! VBS will take place June 20-24, 2016, from 9:30AM-12:30PM each day. We are in need of 120 adult volunteers to make this a successful and safe program. If you would like to volunteer your time in helping with VBS for all 5 days, please fill out the Adult Volunteer Application, provided on the VBS website ( http://www.stfoafrisco.org/vacation-bible-school.html).

Can’t volunteer? K-5 VBS Registration will open to registered members of St. Francis Parish at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 4, 2016. Registration is online only. The link will be provided on the VBS website on April 4. Do you have a student entering grades 6-12 in the 2016-17 year that would like to assist at the 2016 VBS program the week of June 20-24? If your son or daughter can help with ALL 5 days of VBS from 9am-12:45 pm, please register him or her beginning April 4 at 11:00AM with the link provided on the VBS website.
