There is nothing about pain that we do or should enjoy. This may seem obvious, but I don’t know how many times I’ve felt the need to say this to my non-Catholic friends. Almost anytime we talk about why Catholics uses crucifixes instead of bare crosses, my non-Catholic friends balk. “We all know what happened,” they claim. “There’s no need to be gruesome about it.” My answer is always “Yes, there is.” Although we should take no joy in the sufferings of Jesus’ passion, especially when we r ealize that we are their cause, we should take great consolation from them. In fact, the more we understand the intensity of Jesus suffering, the more we understand the depth of His love. And the suffering of Jesus really was horrific. Even before Jesus was brought before Pontius Pilate, He was already exhausted from suffering. Having spent the entire night pleading with His Father to permit a different way, Jesus was already drained, both from the loss of sleep and from the loss of blood. This night might have been the worst of Jesus’ suffering. The anticipation of suffering is almost always worse than the actual suffering itself. That’s saying a lot because the suffering of the crucifixion was no picnic. It started in earnest when Pontius Pilate had Jes us scourged. As anyone that has seen the Passion of the Christ can testify, this scourging was particularly brutal. In fact, it was not uncommon for criminals to die from it alone. For this reason, the Jews limited the number of lashes one could receive to forty. The Jews, however, did not scourge Jesus. Jesus was scourged by the Romans, and the Romans had no such limits. They would have mercilessly scourged Jesus with these whips until it stopped being fun for them. That might take a while because the Romans considered the Jews to be no better than animals. To the Romans, the Jews had no dignity, no purpose and no rights. Roman soldiers thoroughly enjoyed mocking, beating and spitting upon the Jews since it demonstrated their superiority over them. Naturally, with Jesus, the mocking of the soldiers became exceptionally cruel as they wove a crown of thorns and fastened it on Jesus’ sacred head. But, the real torture of Jesus was only beginning. Next, Jesus was forced to carry His cross up the dusty mountain road leading to Calvary. Upon reaching its summit, Jesus would be nailed to the cross and raised up for all those passing by to mock. There He would hang for three hours. For three hours, the savior of the world hung on the cross; His face beaten and scarred. Blood mixed with dirt caked to His entire body. His shoulders irritated from the rough wood of the cross He was forced to carry. His knees and face torn open from the three falls he endured. The wounds from the scourging are now festering with infection. Cramps ravage His entire body as He struggles to raise Himself enough to clear his chest of the fluid rapidly accumulating there. This picture doesn’t even scratch the surface of Jesus’ true pain. By far, the worst, most painful aspect of the crucifixion is Jesus’ spiritual pain. Think about it this way, all of us know what it’s like to be betrayed. The combination of anger and sorrow arising from betrayal is so repulsive that most of us would choose any form of physical abuse if it meant avoiding it. And, the more you love your betrayer, the worse the pain of betrayal is. Now try to picture this pain for Jesus. After all, Jesus is not only betrayed by Judas, but by Peter, by his apostles, by his disciples, by Barabbas, by Pilate, by the Sanhedrin, by the Pharisees, by the Jews lining the street to mock Him, by the soldiers casting lots for His clothing, by literally everyone He knew except His mother, Mary Magdalene and St. John. If that weren’t bad enough, recognize that Jesu s loved each one of His betrayers more than any of us could ever love anybody. Now that is pain. Therefore, it is so important for us to look upon the crucifix, to look upon the crucified body of Jesus Christ. For where others see the body of Jesus in pain, we are called to see the body of Jesus in love. For the only reason Jesus endured any of this was to demonstrate, not by words but by His actions, the true depth of His love. The better we appreciate the pain Jesus endured, the more we can feel His love. Blessings, PALM SUNDAY· April 5, 2020 EASTER SUNDAY, APRIL 12 1st Reading: Acts 10:34a, 37-43 Resp. Applica!ons are due by April 24 and can be picked up from Lisa Krings at the parish office or by downloading the applica'on from Sycamore and The Dispatch.

*HAVE YOU HEARD OF YOUCAT?: YOUCAT is short for Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church, wri!en for high-school age youth and young adults. It offers an easy introduc'on to an ac've prayer life and a personal rela'onship with Jesus. The format includes Q&A, commentary, illustra'ons, Bible cita'ons, and quotes from saints and other great teachers. A#er the Bible, YOUCAT will likely become the go-to place for young people to learn the truth about the Catholic faith. This would be a great addi'on to anyone’s Easter basket. Available on the kiosk in the back of church.

*HSF UNIFORM EXCHANGE: What can be donated?: White or navy blue polo shirts; blue, black or khaki pants; uniform-approved shorts and skorts; St. Francis uniform sweatshirts (elementary and high school); Flyer gear (non-dated). Where do I take my items?: Items for dona'on can be dropped off at the high school office Monday through Friday from

8:00 AM to 4:00 PM or at Paula Kosch’s home. If you are unsure what can be donated, please drop off to us and we will donate unusable items to the Simon House. Ques!ons: Call or text Paula Kosch (402-270-3726) or Lindsey Kosch (402-920-3303). *NOW IS A GOOD TIME FOR ADORATION: Please call the parish office at 402-923-0913 if you would like to fill in a 'me slot. Adora'on takes place every Thursday from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM. If you feel called to sit for an hour with the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, call the parish office. Prayer of Spiritual Communion: My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
