Fr. Don’s Doodling’s HAPPY EASTER! Alleluia, Alleluia! I never tire of

wishing a Happy Easter to everyone during this glorious season. After the 40 days of Lent we are blest with 50 days of Easter – a week of weeks plus a day. The Church seems to be showing us which of these is more important, namely, the celebration of Christ, risen from the dead, and alive with us.

It’s no small thing that the Church calls this the Second Sunday OF Easter, not the Second Sunday after Easter. Because we continue to celebrate Easter this Sunday just as really and truly as we did last Sunday, and for seven more weeks to come. What this says to me is that Christ’s resurrection is so magnificent that to celebrate it on just one Sunday would be inadequate. So it’s smeared out for us for 50 days, concluding with Pentecost Sunday. As though that weren’t enough, we celebrate Christ’s resurrection every Sunday of the year in the Eucharist.

As I read the Sacred Scriptures during the Easter Season, I’m struck with the idea that Jesus was intent on making sure that his disciples understood that he was not only risen from the dead, not only still alive, but still with them. He kept appearing to them, teaching them more things, and prodding them to go out and get busy spreading the Good News of his presence.

This Sunday’s gospel offers one of the best examples. Jesus meets the 2 disciples on the road to Emmaus, teaches them more along the way, and they finally recognize him in “the breaking of bread.” He has to give them this visual reminder of the Last Supper – as if to say, “Remember what I told you? This IS my Body; this IS my Blood. Go, do this in remembrance of me.” And the only way to get them to pay attention to his new presence, this real presence with them, was for him to vanish from their sight. Otherwise they were too focused on his physical bodily presence, and not paying attention to his Eucharistic presence.

We are just as human as those disciples and get distracted with many things. We need to prayerfully work at keeping our attention on the wonder of Christ’s continual presence to us in the Eucharist. Try it and see where Christ takes you next.

Workshop for Liturgical Ministers On Wednesday, May 10, we will have a special workshop for those involved in liturgical ministry, in particular for readers, greeters, ushers, and we are adding those involved in RCIA ministry. It will be offered twice: at 4:00-5:15 p.m. and at 7:00-8:15 p.m. in the Parish Center. The same material will be given at each session, so you can attend either one. In fact,

Pastoral Council Summary

The St. Francis Parish Council meeting was held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. Opening prayer and formation occurred with the formation focused on completion of the synod questionnaire. All parishioners are asked to complete this survey by Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at www.dio.org/synod in order to provide the future direction for our diocese. Topics discussed at the meeting included: scheduling a prayer service and/or Mass for our parishioners experiencing serious illness and diseases; and Carol Seifert’s fundraiser and necessary preparation for the event. A healing Mass has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. to pray for those who are ill. Carol Seifert’s fundraising event will be held Sunday, May 28, 2017 with doors opening at 5:00 p.m. and a cost of $40 per person. Father Don reported that Aaron Kuhn, a parishioner, will be ordained a deacon on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the cathedral in Springfield. Father also stated that two meetings will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. for readers, ushers, and greeters. Individuals are asked to attend one of the two scheduled times. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

Synod Survey We NEED Your Input! Our diocese is offering each of us a wonderful opportunity to provide input in creating and establishing the future direction of our diocese. Your input is valued, needed, and important in providing this spiritual direction by completing a questionnaire/survey. A copy of the survey questions was included in the church bulletin several weeks ago and can be completed by going online at www.dio.org/synod. Additional survey copies will be located at the entrance doors of the church. Written responses can be dropped off at the parish rectory or sent to the Catholic Pastoral Center, Attention: Synod Survey, 1615 West Washington St., Springfield, Illinois 62702-4757. During this year, the fourth synod, (religious term for meeting), is being held with a prayer service that started in January and concluding in November 2017 with a closure Mass. This will only be the fourth synod held in the history of our diocese with the last one being held over fifty years ago. Each parish in our diocese has been allowed a representative to attend the various synod meetings and activities and will be able to vote when needed. The questionnaire responses will be used to provide direction and focus for the synod and that is why it is extremely important to complete the survey. Jan Zeidler is our parish representative for the synod and will be attending the various meetings and activities. She can be contacted at [email protected] or at 217-779-0290 if you have any questions. PLEASE take the time to respond and complete the diocesan survey by May 2, 2017. Your input is crucial in providing a good survey response in creating the future direction for all parish communities in our diocese. As a Lenten offering, please take the time to pray and reflect on your faith. Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks.

In fact,
