What we want most. What we think about most.
How we use our money. What we do with our lei-
sure time. The company we enjoy. Who and what
we admire. What we laugh at.
NOVEMBER 6TH, 2016 We love our Christmas movies. Soon we will bring them out of storage once again for our seasonal enjoyment, perhaps mixing in some nostalgia for Christmases past. One of the perennial favorites is Dickens’ “Christmas Carol.” Critics have opined about the old 1951 black and white version as the best of the many filmed adaptations and I agree. But whatever version you watch, there is a heavy presence of life after death in the tale. “Old Marley” makes his appearance from the hereafter early on to set the plot in motion. Then Scooge’s third visiting spirit is a scary guy who never speaks but points inevitably to Scrooge’s headstone in a possible future. Only after Scrooge’s “conversion” are there any elements of Christmas joy to be enjoyed. The one sad note for me is that the Christ Child only gets an oblique reference with Tiny Tim’s visit to church with his father. Fortunately for us, on this pre-Advent Sunday, which season gives a nod to the future as well as the past and present, we have some early food for thought about our attitude toward death and the right we have to be optimistic about what follows.First, we have the Maccabee brothers bravely defying the very king who has ordered their executions because of their brave refusal to “transgress the laws of our ancestors.” They shout out that “the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever.” In so doing they unintentionally spoke about Christ. Jesus Himself adds a comforting declaration: “Those who are deemed worthy to attain…the resurrection of the dead…can no longer die, for they are like angels.” Of course, the “trick” is to be found worthy. In between comes Paul’s letter to the Thessalo-nians, in which he offers his converts a rousing encouragement and hope for their future. Taking all this into consideration, you should feel particularly glad that you came to Mass today with the opportunity to hear these three uplifting messages from the bible. They act as a counterbalance to any November-like depressing thoughts about your pending demise. Of course, our time here will end, and unless you’re St. Francis of Assisi, you don’t relish the thought. But what joy lies ahead! In November, with its early sunsets and grey rain, we are asked to remember the Holy Souls in Purgatory, especially those we have known and loved in life. That naturally includes thoughts about the life after this and could make us somewhat gloomy. But remember that we call all those people “holy” be-cause they are definitely destined for heaven with no doubt add-ed. They just need to be cleansed a bit of any remnants of sin before seeing God face to face. In the meantime, we have an opportunity at this time of year to take to heart the warning Scrooge received from that third spirit: change our wrongful ways before it is too late. Here is a little self examination that may help us make any necessary prep-arations for our future life in heaven. The questions are admittedly tough, because we can’t brush them off quickly. But then they were composed by a pastor who also was an author and magazine editor by the name of Aiden W. Tozer. He cared about people’s souls, as I do about yours.

SCRIP HELP NEEDED!
The former St. Francis Home and School board
is looking for two parishioners to run the SCRIP
gift card program. This program was a very
successful fund raiser for our school for many
years. Instead of purchasing gift cards at major retail chains
(Walmart Kohl’s, Wawa, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Dun-
kin Donuts), you can purchase the gift cards from SCRIP
and a portion of the proceeds will go back to the parish.
Scrip turns your everyday shopping into fundraising, just by
paying with a gift card.
Here’s how it works.
1. Members order gift cards and earn a rebate for the parish
immediately.
2. There are 700 retailers to choose from.
3. They use the gift card at the store when they shop.
Please keep in mind, this is not the same as the Grocery
Store Scrip Program.
If you are interested in taking over the program, please call
the rectory at 610-459-2203. The former H&S Representa-
tive will work with you to set up the program. A computer is
necessary.
