Preparing Before Lent BeginsTaking some time to get ready for Lent will ensure thatwe aren’t going to miss the first week or two of Lent, because we are just getting started. Lent begins on AshWednesday, but we want to be ready to really take offon that day, rather than just beginning to think aboutLent on that day. Part of what makes a vacation or aspecial anniversary so special is the build-up to it.
Before we get to Ash Wednesday, we should startasking ourselves some questions and we should startwith some preparations. “What does God want to giveme this year?” This question may require that I slowdown a bit and listen to my inner spirit. For example, even if I’m very busy, I realize I’m hungry when I hearmy stomach start “growling.” What am I going to bedoing on Ash Wednesday?” Too often, Ash Wednesdayis like every other day, except that I manage to get tochurch and get ashes on my forehead. Is there anythingelse I can do on Ash Wednesday? How will fastingand abstaining happen for me, for my family on thatspecial day?
It doesn’t take a lot of time to prepare for the beginningof Lent. It just takes desire and focus. God can do somuch with that. We can give God more of a space totouch our hearts if we begin to establish some simplepatterns. We could wake up each morning, and forsomething like a half a minute to a minute, stand bythe edge ofour beds, and just ask the Lord for the graceto let this day be one in which I long for the beginningof Lent. Perhaps we need to ask for specific helps orgraces to get ready to begin Lent. And each night, inthe days ahead, we can practice giving thanks to Godbefore I go to bed. This simple pattern, in the morningand evening can stir our spirits to look forward to andprepare for Lent, as a season of grace.
May our Lord bless us all on this journey ahead.

Church Regulations Regarding

The Origin of PaczkiPaczki (pronounced “ponch - key”) originated as aspecialty dessert as Polish housewives would use upvarious rich ingredients such as oil, sugar and flourbefore the beginning of Lent and the accompanyingfast. Over time, they became a featured attraction atpre-Lenten zapusty” or festive carnival gatherings bothin Poland as well as in Polish emigre communitiesthroughout the world. They have become a specialfeature in Polish specialty shops, church festivals andin Polish homes on “Tłusty Wtorek” (Fat Tuesday) theday before Ash Wednesday and the official beginningofLent.
