Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)   What inspired the pilgrimage with the  Czestochowa Icon "From Ocean to Ocean"? The icon was presented to the Russian Orthodox pro‐life movement, whose leaders decided to transport her in a pro‐life pilgrimage through Russia, beginning in Vladivostok, located in the Far East on the shore of the Pacific Ocean.  The goal of the journey had to be determined, and the possibility of its going further was considered.  The leaders of the movements for the defense of life from Europe came to Czestochowa and formed  an International Committee.  While at first it seemed like a foolish, impossible concept, the peregri‐nation "From Ocean to Ocean" became a reality. According to a time‐honored custom, Christians brought a holy icon to the front lines, like the Ark of the Covenant, asking God for help  in the time of the greatest threats and wars.  Today, we want to bring the icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa to the front line of the great struggle for  the civilization of life, which is under attack by the more and more powerful and very aggressive civilization of death.  

Why is the Czestochowa icon so important for the defense of human life? Our Lady of Czestochowa is considered by the Chris‐tian tradition to be written by St. Luke the Evangelist on the tabletop from Mary's home in Nazareth.  In that icon, Mary is presented as Hodigitria, a guide, a Mother who points out the way.  Her right hand points to Christ.  The current threat to the civilization of life and love has a global character.  Defenders of life real‐ize that alone they have no chance of winning the struggle with the extremely aggressive civilization of death.  They ask for help from the Mother of God, who defends life and crushed the head of the eternal kil‐ler.  They chose the Czestochowa icon as the most well‐known and unifying tradition in the east as well as in the west.  They stood before the Mother of God in the Czestochowa icon and dedicated the defense of the civilization of life and love to her.    

How does the icon differ from a painting or  image? The language of the icon is based on Sacred Scripture, the unique manner of evangelization.  It is thus gov‐erned by a strict canon which may not be altered,  just as one is not allowed to revise Sacred Scripture.  A painter is the creator of his painting, in which he pre‐sents his own world view.  An iconographer must hum‐bly conform to the canon of language and content in order to remain faithful to the teaching of the Church.  In this context one can see the immense dif‐ference between the most beautiful religious painting and the canonical icon.  It is like comparing a philoso‐phical tract with the Holy Scripture.  This also applies even to the most beautiful image, which is not and cannot become the language, the actual content of the Word of God and window to the spiritual, heav‐enly reality.

FAQ ‐  Najczęściej zadawane pytania:  

Jaka była inspiracja pielgrzymki z Ikoną Częstochowską „Od Oceanu do Oceanu”? Ikona została podarowana rosyjskiemu, prawosławnemu ruchowi pro‐life, którego liderzy postanowili przewieźć ją w pielgrzymce przez Rosję w intencji obrony życia zaczynając od Władywostoku, miasta położonego najbardziej na Wschodzie na wybrzeżu Oceanu Spokojnego. Trzeba było jednak określić cel podróży i wtedy okazało się, że istnieje możliwość pojechania dalej, przez całą Europę aż do Fatimy, do pobrzeża Oceanu Atlantyckiego. Przywódcy ruchów obrony życia z Europy zjechali się w Częstochowie, utworzyli Międzynarodowy Komitet i z radością podtrzymali tę ideę. Peregrynacja „Od Oceanu do Oceanu”, chociaż początkowo wydawała się szalonym, niewykonalnym pomysłem, stała się faktem. 

 Czym ikona rożni się od obrazu czy od figury? Język ikony bazuje na Piśmie świętym, to swoisty sposób ewangelizacji. Dlatego też obowiązuje ścisły kanon, którego nie wolno zmieniać, tak jak nie wolno przeredagowywać Pisma Świętego.  Malarz jest twórcą swojego obrazu, w którym przedstawia własną wizję świata. Ikonograf musi pokornie dostosować się do kanonu języka i treści, aby pozostać wiernym nauc‐zaniu Kościoła. W tym kontekście widać, jak olbrzymią różnicę stanowi nawet najpiękniejszy obraz o treści religijnej od kanonicznej ikony. To tak jakby porówny‐wać traktat filozoficzny z Pismem Świętym. Dotyczy to także nawet najpiękniejszej figury. Nie jest ona i nie może stać się językiem, samą treścią Słowa Bożego i oknem do duchowej, niebiańskiej rzeczywistości. 

 Czym jest ikona w chrześcijańskiej tradycji? Ikona to zgodnie starą tradycją chrześcijańską „okno” do świętości, do nieba. Można w niej, czy przez  nią, spotkać Bożą obecność oraz ujrzeć świat i wieczność oczami Boga. Kontemplując ikonę człowiek może wejść w świat duchowy, zbliżyć się do sacrum. Ikona pozwala odczuć czas z Bożej perspektywy. Wszystkie wydarzenia na ikonie dzieją się i jednocześnie, i zawsze. Pozwala, zobaczyć to co niewidzialne i odczuć to, co jest wieczne, i niezniszczalne , kontemplować świat duchowy. Więcej ‐ pozwala człowiekowi wier‐zącemu wejść w bezpośrednią relację z Bogiem, Matką Bożą czy świętymi. Ikona jest modlitwą człowieka, hymnem Bożej chwały. Jest kanałem łaski. Niektórzy wręcz mówią o emanującej z ikony energii. Faktem jest, że wielu ludzi odczuwa „dotknięcie” Bożej obecności przez wejście w jej głębię. Dzięki temu Bóg dokonuje wielu znaków, duchowych i fizycznych uzdrowień. Mówi się nawet, że najbardziej czczone ikony są „tworzące cuda” (cudotworne).

Wybory posłów do Parlamentu Europejskiego  odbędą się na obszarze Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki w sobotę dnia 24 maja 2014 r. (w Polsce 25 maja br.)  Obywatele polscy będą mogli wziąć udział w głosowaniu jeżeli posiadają ważny polski paszport, ukończone 18 lat oraz zostaną wpisani – na podstawie uprzedniego osobistego zgłoszenia – do spisu wyborców prowadzonego przez Konsulat Generalny RP w Chicago.  Uruchomiony został system bezpośredniej rejestracji elektronicznej dla osób chcących oddać swój głos w wyborach do Parlamentu Europejskiego. A funny thing happened on the way to the dollar store the other day. It was Easter Saturday afternoon, actually, and the trip to the dollar story really began with a trip to my local Jewel on Easter Saturday morning. I arrived there shortly after 9:00 AM for last‐minute groceries before hosting my wife’s family Easter Sunday. I had a small cartful of stuff and had finished unloading when I no‐ticed that the guy in line behind me had just two items. Typically in such circumstance, I ask the person if he/she wants to go ahead of me, and this is what I did that morning, too, but I did it a bit more hesitantly this time. And why? Because the guy was looking to buy two large cans of Icehouse beer.       The checkout clerk obviously knew this man as she engaged him in conversation. “Nope,” she said. “I’m not going to do that for you. Not today.” “Aw, c’mon,” the man replied. He was smiling. Smiling in return, but sternly, the woman repeated her “no”s and the man repeated his “c’mon”s several times. Next the man said, “You don’t love me anymore,” and the woman answered, “I do love you, and God loves you,” but then, nodding to the two cans of Icehouse, she added, “and that’s why I’m not going to put this through for you.” She didn’t yield, and the man left. Jewel pays that woman to field groceries, but on Easter Saturday morning, she fielded a whole lot more.        And now to the dollar store… I went there for a small Easter basket for the party, but just outside the door I came upon a man in disheveled clothing sitting on the sidewalk. He asked me for two 

dollars. I found this humorous. You know. A guy outside a store that sells everything for a buck, seeking two. Many times when asked for money like this, I just keep walking, but perhaps follow‐ing the Jewel clerk’s lead‐‐or perhaps simply because of the cele‐bration at hand‐‐I engaged the man. His name was Joe. I wished him a happy Easter and told him to please use the money (I gave him a dollar) for good purposes. He said he would, then he amused me again‐‐unintentionally, certainly‐‐with his closing comment as he took the bill from my hand: “Thank you, Father.”          When Jesus asks the Emmaus‐bound disciples in today’s Gos‐pel what they are discussing as they walk along, the pair cannot believe this stranger hasn’t heard the news of the crucified Naza‐rene, the empty tomb, the vision of angels. I love Christ’s response: “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!” But we’re all slow of heart, no? At least we are when we fail to recognize Christ in our midst. I recognized him in the checkout lady at Jewel. I’m far from priestly, but in the very best moments of my very best days, I try to emulate these men of God, so I was honored‐‐and humbled‐‐that the disheveled man found a man of God in me. The disciples on the road to Emmaus ultimately come to recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread. At the dollar store or Jewel or anywhere we find ourselves, may the world come to recognize Jesus in each of us‐‐and not just occasion‐ally but in every moment of every day‐‐by the way we live our lives.

BAPTISM:

For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of the month at the 3:00PM Mass.
