SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 13, 2012 The priests, religious, and staff of St. Felicitas extend blessings and best wishes to all mothers of the parish and to the mothers of all our parishioners, living or deceased.

THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT We have a unique episode in the Acts of the Apostles today. A whole roomful of people are baptized with the Holy Spirit before they are baptized with water! The verb used—“the Holy Spirit ‘fell’ on them” (Acts 10:44)—is characteristic of the way the Spirit works throughout the book of Acts: powerful and surprising. Though this “baptism” is not the normative way the New Testament de-scribes baptism, it is still a good reminder today that the Holy Spirit is not controlled by whether or not we pour water, but rather that our sacramental signs reveal the presence of the Spirit at work among us. And we have a double reinforcement of how this work is accomplished from a Letter and a Gospel bearing John’s name. It is love, self-sacrificing and self-giving love, that manifests the Spirit of Jesus in our midst. It is love that is the greatest of commandments. The Spirit is manifested equally through those who live in that love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Just as the origins of Lent have to do with accompanying people in the final stages of prepa-ration for baptism at Eastertime, so does the structure of the Easter season help the newly received Catholics take root in the community. This is the season of “mystagogy,” which means “reflection on the mysteries.” This means that new Catholics are remembering the sacraments by which they be-come one with us, and are sorting out the implications for their everyday life. They can understand the excitement of Cornelius and his family in the first reading, filled with the Holy Spirit, and so eager to begin their new life that they overwhelm St. Peter. The second reading and the Gospel today like-wise help our new brothers and sisters explore their new life as an experience of God’s tender love. Long ago, our tradition named these newly baptized adults and children the “neophytes,” from Greek words meaning “newly planted.” Newly planted in the garden of faith, they look to us to pro-vide the fertile soil in which their new life can take root and grow. You can help. If you have “neophytes” in your parish, a card or note of welcome, or warm words of congratulation, are still timely. It’s Easter! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Using the words of Jesus at his Last Supper, the priest consecrates the bread and wine. By the power of the Holy Spirit, they become the Body and Blood of Christ, truly present. In this celebration we do as Jesus commanded when he told his apostles. “Eat this and remember me…..Drink this and re-member me” (1 Corinthians 11:24-25) We would like to congratulate these children of our parish community who received Holy Com-munion for the first time during the celebration of the Eucharist on May 12, it was a most memorable ex-perience for the children and their families.~ We pray that they continue to come to the table of the Lord to be fed with the Bread of Life. ~~Sandi Jordan Aborashid Jesse Martinez Lilyanne Banados Ruben Martinez Chelsea Basilio Veraneice Martinez Jacob Botelho Erick Miramontes Katherine Brighina Jazzlynn Monzon James Cazares Jessica Monzon Jesse Cazares Adam Ongsioco Allen Duong Ignacio Ramirez Juliana Encinas Vannya Ramos Taylor Escamilla Alexander Robertsmith Thea Guevarra Brisa Rodriguez Nene Kanu Larrieze Santiago Nnenna Kanu Leo Santiago Victoria Landeros Kolton Scortt Chloe LaRossa Daniella Shaffer Olivia LaRossa Joshua Silveira Katherine Le Alejandra Ward Sophia Mariscal Isabel Zambrano

ST. FELICITAS SCHOOL It was an honor to be a part of the First Communion cere-mony during these last two Saturdays. The second grad-ers from the school and parish looked amazing in their dresses and suits.l Their holy reverence when receiving the body and blood of Christ was inspiring. I was re-minded of the awe and wonder our children so often ex-perience in their faith lives, and asked God’s help in ex-periencing my own faith as the children often do. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus tells us “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”, Please join me in continuing to pray for our second graders in the school and parish as they con-tinue to be Christ’s light to others and will now joyfully join in our communion table each week. Just as we worship as one community, let’s have some Saturday night fun together too! Please help us end the year with a bang at our Casino Night on May 19th. This is our last fundraiser for our “Raise the Roof” Campaign and a great way to celebrate what a wonderful community we have! Tickets are still on sale now and we would love to have as many parishioners participate as possible! See you there!!!

JEANINE’S STORY I once saved up my money all year long so that I could go to a workshop. I was standing in the dinner line next to the workshop presenter as she stretched her arms wide and said loudly, “Ah! It’s good to be alive!” That set me thinking. For her it is good to be alive. For me it is good to be alive. But what about the homeless per-son, sleeping tonight in a public park? What about the person diagnosed with cancer who has no health insurance? What about the family living in a tent in Haiti, the woman on the streets of Los Angeles addicted to heroin? What about the children who are starving in a refugee camp in Darfur, and the mothers who cannot feed them? Just what does it mean when you say it’s good to be alive? I do not intend to be self-righteous. I happen to be a middle-class person with many blessings in life. What I wish is that everyone could have what I do. This is naïve, I suppose. Idealistic, certainly. And what, after all, do I propose to do about it? Where is my plan, my solution to the poverty and hunger that plague the majority of the world’s population? I am not arrogant enough to propose a solution. Others smarter, wiser, more politically savvy, have proposed solutions since the beginning of time. I only know I cannot wish idly for others to have a better life. I must try to work for it in whatever ways I can; otherwise my gratitude becomes meaningless. I will have closed the door on the better part of my Christianity and my humanity, cut off from the love, learning, and pain that are essential to living, trapped in com-placency. Then I am very poor indeed. Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. THANK YOU ! From St. Mary’s Center:

Dear Father Augustine, Your gift of $477.73 to St. Mary’s Center helps us do many small things everyday so we can continue to touch the lives of the most vulnerable among us. Your generosity enables us, as Mother Teresa says, “do something won-derful”. Your contribution helps children living in poverty to enjoy learning at our pre-school, homeless seniors find the power within them-selves to make changes in their lives, our Out-reach Program to provide companion visits to home bound seniors, and our “Food for All Ages” Program to nourish many in need. Thank you for being a part of this community.l Sincerely, Carol Johnson Executive Director “Many thanks to everyone at St. Felicitas!

F E L I Z D I A D E L A S M A D R E S !
