Words from Our ChaplainDear Texas Tech Students, Parents, Alumni, and Friends

“If the Lord does not build the house,in vain do its builders labor.” – Psalm 127:1

One more academic year is over. Some of our students are graduating, and the bittersweet feeling of leaving is on the air. Leaving college after belonging to a Catholic community of faith where personal growth takes place in an environment of Christ-like friendship is bittersweet. Nevertheless, there is also a lot of excitement among those who are staying because of the new students who are coming in next year. It is our commitment to continue providing a faith community and a place that will help the students and anyone who is involved with Texas Tech to maintain and growth in their faith, walking with Christ and professing his name while in college.

Having this in mind, we are working on building a new Student Center. This is a real need as the number of Catholic students and ministries keep increasing. The facilities we have right now are not very functional in terms of space and structure. We would like to invite all our alumni, friends, and all members of our community to prayerfully consider supporting us spiritually, financially, and in any way possible. At his time, this is what we feel called to by the Lord, and we pray to him for his help to “build the house” for the upcoming generations of Catholics at Texas Tech.

Father,We give you thanks for everything you provide in our lives.

We give you thanks for calling us to participate in your mission. We come to you remembering your word:

“If the Lord does not build the house, the builders work in vain”

We ask you, Giver of all good things,to help us build the new student center;

to help us build it with the purposeof proclaiming the Name of Jesus Christ

to the present and future generationsof Catholics here at Texas Tech.

We humbly ask youto bless us all with the gift of the Spirit

to be generous with our time, talent and treasure;seeking always your glory

and the good of all peoples.Amen.

Sincerely,

Fr. Jorge A. Rátiva Ochoa, OPCampus Ministry Chaplain

It has been difficult to say the least, the real world poses as many challenges as it does blessings. The community here has helped me hear my Call to Life over the noise of others who would use me and tear me down, or have me use others to tear them down. I don’t know what I would have done without my new found family here at St. Elizabeths.”--Manuel Quinones

“Coming into college I knew I wasn’t going to be part of a team, as I once was in high school. I knew many things would be changing in my life, but one thing I did not have planned was finding a team within the CSM. By joining various organizations through the CSM, I have grown so much as a person, as corny as that sounds, it’s the truth because every person who I have met here has wholeheartedly cared for my well-being as a new member in this family.”--Narah Alcoreza

“The Catholic Student Ministries (CSM) has changed my life. The support from this community is absolutely astonishing. They have given me hope that I can do great things in my life. The positive at-titude is very dense, and it’s hard to not be smiling when I can hang out with this community. CSM has opened up my faith and I cannot thank this community enough for giving me that opportunity.”--Justin Mendoza

[ ]

“This group of people has shown me that you can find good, quality individuals that share your faith and that you can still have a great time with. I have had a lot of things happen in the past year, and I have turned to members of this community to give me strength and hope for the future. I can’t describe the impact this community has had on my life and how truly blessed I am to be apart of it.”--Kayla Gunner

][The Diocesan Youth Retreat Team (DYRT) is one of the many ministries at our Catholic Student Center. DYRT’s mission is to spread the gospel around the Diocese of Lubbock and surrounding areas by planning and facilitating retreats for middle school and high school students. Over the past semester, our

dedicated students ministered to the youth of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lubbock and St. William’s Catholic Church in Denver City to help prepare them for their confirmation. Each retreat was planned individually to specifically meet the needs of the parishes. At the DYRT retreat at St. Joseph’s Parish, the youth spent the weekend learning and developing skills to seek the presence and will of Christ in their lives. At St. William’s Parish in Denver City, the DYRT staff led the confirmation students into a deeper understanding of the Lord’s prayer and a closer relationship with God our Father.

DYRT also worked outside of the Diocese of Lubbock, facilitating a retreat for the youth of Rowena, TX. In Rowena, DYRT helped the high school students to recognize their individual gifts and how to use them to glorify God.

In addition, for the first time since the DYRT ministry began, DYRT helped plan and facilitate the Diocesan Youth Rally of 2013, “Light Up the World.” The youth rally hosted more than 500 middle school and high school

students who left on fire for their faith. Members of DYRT staff served as the Masters of Ceremony, workshop leaders, singers and musicians, and assistants for the diocesan staff to help make this year’s youth rally a success!

DYRT was incredibly blessed this year to have such a hard working and passionate staff. Each student involved from freshmen to seniors gave up countless house and many weekends to serve the Lord in this ministry. As director, I have had the pleasure to see each staff member grow and develop spiritually as well as see our community grow closer together. I sincerely appreciate and thank you for all your prayers, and ask for your continued support for another semester of evangelization and growth next fall.

Knights of Columbus Council #14426The Knights of Columbus College Council 14426 is proud to announce that we have had yet another successful semester. We have had the opportunity to host several events, serve the community and the church as a whole, and to welcome several new members.

We started off the year by sending several of our Knights to the Texas State Capitol to make our voices heard as part of a pro-life rally. From there we hosted several events, both alongside CSA and solo, for the student community at St. Elizabeth’s. The Knights spearheaded

several service projects intended to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. We also had the opportunity to see our ranks grow, as we welcomed several new 1st degree members over the course of the semester, The addition of our newest knights, Karl Mauch, Chris Peters, Drew Macha, Tanner Norrel, Nick Montero, Jay Cordova, and Garret Bloch, now makes the council eligible to receive the Double Star Council Award. Council 14426 once again held its annual Fish Fry, which served the community during the Lenten season. For the first time in our council history the Fish Fry featured several bingo nights, which were a great chance for some fun and fellowship. Council 14426 was also extremely proud and honored to have the opportunity to serve Bishop Placido, who enjoyed his meal thoroughly and commended the college Knights.

Our next major event was the 6th Annual Barn Dance benefiting the Nurturing Center. The students of St. Elizabeth along with many of our older parishioners came out for a night of fun, fellowship, and some great country music. The beautiful and talented Kimberly Dunn, whom the college knights would like to thank for agreeing to play for such a great

cause, provided the exceptional entertainment that evening.

We wrapped our year by sending four of our brother knights to Corpus Christi for the Knights State Convention. Our trip started off with success. Before we even reached Corpus Christi, we were informed that we had already taken several awards over the course of the convention’s first day. The next day our delegates took to the floor to outline the direction of the Texas Knights of Columbus for the coming year. The highlight of this meeting was when a referendum was brought before the delegates that would have compromised our rights under the Constitution. Our Grand Knight stood up and delivered an impassioned speech urging his brother Knights to put down this referendum. The next day our Grand Knight drafted an amended version, which was passed. Texas Tech was put on the map and many fellow brother Knights from across Texas congratulated them for a job well done. We made

a splash on the Gulf Coast and ensured that we would receive College Council of the Year

Overall we have had one our most successful years to date, and we hope to continue to improve as time goes on. Council 14426 would like to thank everyone in the St. Elizabeth’s community and within the Diocese of Lubbock that has supported us, we have truly enjoyed the opportunity to serve this wonderful community and look forward to continuing to do so in the future. We would also as a council like to thank our outgoing officers for all that they have done to make this school year a resounding success. May the officers that take their place bring the same attitude and motivation to the tasks ahead. Let us also recognize our outgoing Seniors, Luke Downey, David, Dukich , Alvis Hornaday, and Aaron Canson, for their diligent work as members of Council 14426. Lastly, and most importantly we would like to thank our priests for their continued support of Council 14426, without which everything accomplished would have been completed with much difficulty.

A Word From Our New Fundraising CoordinatorI would like to introduce myself, I am Nathan Robinett the new Fund-raising Coordinator for Saint Elizabeth Catholic Student Center. I am an Alumni of Texas Tech and have served and been served by the Catholic Student Association through the parish. I am looking forward to and thankful for being given the opportunity to give back to this community and to help us achieve the goal needed for a new student center to better serve the students of Texas Tech and South Plains. Praised be Jesus Christ!! Thank you friends of the student center for all of the support, through prayers and financial support over the past semester. It has been a very busy spring with many activities and events hosted by all of the organizations. It is also a time of transition in the life of the Church in the life of campus ministry at Texas Tech. With the stepping down of Pope Emeritus Benedict and the election of Pope Francis, there is new life and excitement in the universal Church. There is also new excitement in the life of Catholic Student Ministry.

As I am sure you have heard by now, we have kicked off the building fund campaign to gather the necessary funds to build a 25,000+ square foot new facility. This new facility will provide meeting spaces for the many meetings of the organization, a large gathering space, a library, organization offices, a larger administrative space to house a growing campus ministry staff, and many other features not currently available in our

current facility. We are still a long way from opening the doors, but all journeys begin with one step. We plan to have ongoing updates on the website, so please go there every once in a while to see where we are and ways you can help make this a reality for the students of Texas Tech.

As we look forward to the next semester, there is great anticipation with the new leaderships of all the organizations to continue to grow and excel in the roles they play in reaching out and ministering to the over 5,000 Catholic students on the campus. Each organization has challenged itself to continue to grow, yet still provide the individual attention and concern for the well-being of each member of their organization. Please continue to pray for their success. I also ask you to please pray for each of the members of the campus ministry staff as we seek to lead each of the students to a deeper relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. Know you continue to remain in my prayers. Thank you for your ongoing support. May the Lord continue to bless you.

Words From Our Campus Minister

Catholic Student AssociationThis semester, the Catholic Student Association has strived to become bigger and better than ever before. This semester we continued TGIFs (Thank God It’s Friday!). We had a great time going to the drive in movies, teaming up with the Knights of Columbus

for a Dodgeball tournament and putting together a 50s Sock Hop Dance!. TGIFs are a great opportunity for fellowship with fellow Catholic

students as well as letting loose after a long week of classes.

Our weekly events have been going strong as well. Dinner and a Rosary is a great chance for us to engage in community prayer as well as enjoy a home-cooked meal from various members of the parish. Mass on Campus every Wednesday allows students to escape the chaos of the school day and encounter Jesus on campus. And every Thursday night helps us start the weekend right with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, praise & worship at The Rock and confession available to everyone.CSA also had a great time on our annual Ski Trip. We spend four days and three nights in Red River, New Mexico. It was a great bonding experience for all the students who attended.

In April we welcomed Dr. Tom Woods to St. Elizabeth’s to speak to the community. Dr. Woods is a New York Times bestselling author and has appeared on EWTN, CNBS, MSNBC, Fox News and other networks. His lecture was entitled The Church and The Market: A Catholic Defense of Catholicism.

We ended the year with our annual formal. The theme this year was Anchors Away! Our social chairs did a fabulous job and it was a fantastic night! Later that week, Texas Tech University awarded the Catholic Student Association “Best Religious Organization of the Year” for the fourth year in a row.

CSA is already gearing up for next year to spread the Gospel around the Texas Tech campus. It has been great welcoming so many new members into our community. I’ve been humbled to serve these students and incredibly humbled to work alongside such amazing officers! Thank you to the officers of 2012-2013: Vice-President: Garrett Wire, Secretary/Treasurer: Shelby Williams, Liturgical Committee Chairs: Mathew Mayes & Audrey Alumbar, Service Committee Chairs: Mathew McAden & Kristen Davied, Publicity Committee Chairs: Ashely Peña & Claire Armstrong, Social Committee Chairs: Colleen Williams & Marita Moya, Special Projects: Krysten Haga, Freshman Ambassadors: Jessi Hand & Lance Beyer, and Graduate Student Ambassador: Peter McDonough. It’s truly been a blessing. We appreciate any prayers of support and will be praying for all of you and your families!

CHI RHO

It’s been another great, fun-filled semester for Chi Rho this spring. As a Catholic service fraternity, our active chapter has been working hard to be a service component to the city of Lubbock and to Texas Tech University. Some of our biggest services this semester were Relay for Life and Arbor Day, Pancake Festival, and the

Lubbock Art Festival. As well as service activities, we were also able to bond and strengthen our faith and brotherhood through weekly faith events such as bible study,

daily Mass, Adoration, and The Rock, a praise and worship band, which includes three of our own members: Michael Corrada, Stephen Molina, and Marc Cataldo. We even held an active retreat in January that took place in Ruidoso, New Mexico.

We were excited to initiate 14 pledges to Chi Rho on May 5, 2013: Cathryn Arterberry, Sherrye Buchanan, Tiffany Cavasos, Sebastian Emery, Annalisse Fontana, Gilbert Hernandez, Lauren Hernandez, Tiffany Hernandez, Rachel Kahlig, Amariani Marquez, Chris Partidas, Ashley Schaelling, Bianca Solana, and Kevin Wakely. As the semester is ending we look forward to many exciting things next year. The active chapter is working with the alumni to

prepare for Chi Rho’s 50th anniversary that will take place in spring 2014. Lastly we would like to congratulate the new top three of Chi Rho for the 2013-2014 school year; President, Meagan Garcia, Vice President, Sarah Flores, and Pledge Trainer, Michelle Hochstein.

Words from some of our Spring 2013 GraduatesBeing a part of CSM has been an amazing blessing that couldn’t have come at a better time. When I first decided to join my sophomore year, through Raider Awakening, I knew

almost no one, but I was immediately accepted into something I felt I didn’t deserve. It wasn’t long before I considered them my family and felt a true belonging that I had been looking for since I had came to Tech. I was given many opportunities within the community including being in core leadership for RA 47. I have met many people I hope to keep in contact with as I move on to the next part of my life and have made some unforgettable memories.

Andrew ModicaCivil Engineering

After 4 years of being apart of the Catholic Student Ministries I can truly say that this experience and these organizations have saved me. I have grown so much over these past few years because of

the people I have met, the lessons I have learned, and the blessings that God has bestowed upon me through Catholic Student Ministries. I will never forget everything that this community has given me and I will continue to pray for its success in the future. I love this community and I pray that it will continue to bless students, such as myself, who are searching for that opportunity to get closer to God and are look-ing for that “home away from home.”

Tommy BossallerBusiness

Being a part of Catholic Student Ministry has given me a home here in Lubbock. For the first few years of college I struggled to find a place that I felt that I belonged, but after I attended Raider Awakening 45, I was instantly

part of a second family. The people I’ve met and the relationships I’ve formed are things I’ll take with me for the rest of my life. God has truly blessed me.

Congratulations to all our graduates! May God continue to guide you in your future. Catholic Student Ministries will always keep you in our prayers.

Being a part of Catholic Student Ministries has been one of the best parts about coming to Texas Tech University for me. Over the past four years, I have grown in my faith and love for God

because of this organization and the people who are involved with it. I am proud to be a part of an organization that allows Christ to define and captivate them. I have learned how to love God in an more intimate way than I could have ever discovered on my own and I am leaving college truly defined and living out my faith each and every day because of it. I have also been blessed to make God-centered friendships and relationships here that will carry with me for the rest of my life. This organization is truly a family and a home away from home when you come to college. I have been very blessed to have been involved with all of the different ministries here and to have learned from each of them.

40 Days for LifeThis spring, from February 13th through March 24th, Lubbock joined hundreds of cities around the world in prayer during the Srping 2013 40 Days for Life Campaign. Through prayer and fasting, vigil participation, and community outreach, 658 lives were confirmed saved through the campaign. Here in Lubbock, we experienced our most successful campaign to date. Not only did we see a continued rise in the awareness of the problem of abortion in our city and increased vigil and prayer participation, we also had a total of EIGHT confirmed saves out on the sidewalks in front of the local Planned Parenthood and only days after the campaign ended got news that the abortionist was moving out of state and until further notice Planned Parenthood would not be performing any more surgical abortions in Lubbock. Before final details could even be set for our local campaign, 40 Days for Life teamed up with the Texas Tech Knights of Columbus and traveled to Austin to attend the Texas Rally for Life. Eleven of our students joined thousands of fellow Texans that weekend to speak up for the unborn in a march that ended right at the steps of the state capitol. Students had the opportunity to hear pro-life speaker Abby

Johnson and our current Governor, Rick Perry talk about the pro-life direction Texas is taking. Our local campaign kicked off with a rally at the Providence Presbyterian Church with well over a hundred in attendance enjoying food, praise and worship and several local pro-life speakers, including Elizabeth Trevino and Lawrence Desouza from the Nurturing Center and Krysten Haga, the current Campaign Director. At the Halfway mark of the campaign, 40 Days for Life joined up with the Rock and brought in a large crowd for both praise and worship and an update on the campaign. Campaign Director Krysten Haga shared the great news of the four lives saved at the time and called students to step outside of their comfort zones and speak up for those that do not yet have a voice.

Throughout the campaign, several students participated in peaceful vigil out on the sidewalks, often praying rosaries or reading scripture.

Dates have been released for the upcoming fall campaign starting in September and the 40 Days for Life team is already hard at work coming up with ways to move forward and continue to grow in their pro-life ministry.

Raider Awakening #48Raider Awakening 48

Greetings from Raiderland!

This past semester, Raider Awakening notched another successful retreat as we have completed 48 total in our program’s history. I was able to help lead roughly 200 college-aged staffers along with Nathan Robinett and the rest of Raider Awakening Leadership, in a wonderful weekend filled with spirituality, love, adoration, and capped it all off with the Holy Mass.

“Raider Awakening 48: Renewed Salvation” had 95 retreaters and was hosted at St. Michael’s Parish in Levelland, TX. The continued support from St. Elizabeth’s as well as the various ministries within Catholic Student Ministries helps makes this all possible, as it takes a small army of motivated and dedicated members of this community to run the retreat efficiently. I cannot thank all of those involved enough for everything they provide Raider Awakening on a consistent basis in order for us to grow stronger and to continue to impact the lives of others around us.

This opportunity to help lead this retreat was a dream come true, but one that was only realized through the support of all of those around me. The world does not need good leaders to do everything on their own, but to recognize the gifts of those around in order to build up the world as a whole. The staffers of Raider Awakening are witnesses to that, as their time, talent, and treasure are the sole

reason this retreat is even possible. Without their hard work, effort, and support, my Leadership would have been able to accomplish nothing, and for that, we all thank you.

Raider Awakening is looking forward to an exciting new chapter under the leadership of Kara Acker and Lizzy Ferris as they carry the baton of this wonderful ministry into our 49th retreat October 18-20. God bless you all, and thank you for your support of Raider Awakening as well as Catholic Student Ministries!

Women Of Faith

Women of Faith was excited to begin another semester here in Lubbock! Our organization continued to facilitate the spiritual growth among the college women at St. Elizabeth’s as well as provide them with a faith-based sisterhood that

they could grow and bond in.

Women of Faith continued meeting for bible study this spring. After finishing the Gospel of

Luke in the fall, Women of Faith decided to continue with Luke’s writings and dive into the Acts of the Apostles. The Acts of the Apostles traces the first 30 years from the Ascension of Jesus in Jerusalem to the imprisonment of Paul in Rome. This book picks up where Luke’s Gospel ends, showing how the Holy Spirit’s work in the life of Jesus now operates in the living community of Christ’s mystical body, the Church. Studying this book allowed the girls to share and grow with one another as well as take the Holy Spirit’s mission in the early church and apply it to their lives today!

We also continued small faith groups this semester. These groups were created with the intention to reach women on a more personal level and provide an opportunity for deeper faith development. Each of these groups was named after a different fruit of the Spirit and was led by a member of the Women of Faith leadership team. The fruits we chose were; faithfulness, kindness, joy and peace. The women truly challenged one another and formed a loving sisterhood this

semester. It was amazing to watch God work within these groups to provide fruitful discussion, spiritual growth and friendship.

Women of Faith was able to end the school year on a high note with a camping trip to Palo Duro Canyon! We wanted to provide the girls an opportunity to grow in both faith and friendship while allowing them to relax and have some fun before final exams! Women of Faith Leadership focused the talks on the trip around the life of Mary. The point of the talks was to help the women to model their lives after the attitudes of Mary and to help them make the big life decisions that we are either going through now or will be faced with within the next few years.

We are excited to announce the new faith team for Women of Faith 2013-2014: Megan Ketterer, Lauren Bossaller, Katie Shelton and Emmafae Mortega! We look forward to beginning the fall semester under their leadership and watching God work in them to continue to better this ministry. We also are excited to announce that Women of Faith will have a faculty sponsor beginning next fall, Dr. Heidi Brady. We are excited for the knowledge, experience, and love for Christ that she will bring to our organization! We ask that you would pray for the beautiful women involved in our ministry and that we may continue to provide an environment rooted in prayer and God’s love.

With His eternal love,
