BUILDING HOUSES Though David wanted to build a dwelling place for God to reside in, God promised David something greater: a “house” that would last forever. In Christ, we find that promise fulfilled.

INSIDE THE READINGS In the lull of peacetime, King David ponders the trap-pings of his success (a house of costly cedar) while the ark of God rests in a tent. The ark of God, which held the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, essentially signaled the presence of God among the people. David considers building a proper temple for the ark, but through the prophet Nathan, God an-nounces, “I have never dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up from Egypt to this day, but I have been going about in a tent or a tabernacle.” Rather than David building a house suitable for the presence of God, God will build a house for David. The Hebrew word for house is bayit and means both a dwelling and a dynasty. God makes an everlasting promise to David that “I will establish [your] kingdom forever.”

The second reading seems to bridge the promise of eternal covenant and its realization in Jesus Christ. Though Romans 16:25–27 is part of the closing sec-tion of the canonical Letter to the Romans, this dox-ology has appeared at the end of chapters 14, 15, or 16 in various manuscripts. Whether written by Paul or added by a later editor, these verses form a fitting conclusion to a letter that strove to explain how the “revelation of the mystery” had come to be shared with all the nations (Gentiles).

The Davidic promise announced by Nathan is ful-filled by Gabriel when the angel declares to Mary that she will bear a son, and “the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father.” He will be called “the Son of the Most High” and “of his kingdom there will be no end.” Thus Mary’s child will be the culmi-nation of the promise, testimony to God’s faithful-ness. When Zechariah asks for confirmation after receiving a similar birth announcement from Gabriel, he is struck dumb. However, Mary’s question— how?—doesn’t doubt the angel, only the mechanics of such a birth. And for Mary there is confirmation, “Behold, Elizabeth . . . has conceived . . . for nothing will be impossible for God.”

RESPONDING IN PRAYER Faithful God, may our lives make true the words of our psalm today: “The promises of the Lord I will sing forever.” May the light of your Son, whose com-ing is nearer than when we first began to believe, shine ever more strongly in us each today, on Christ-mas and beyond

NURSES CORNER

December 2017

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Matthew 5:4.

The Christmas season can be a mixture of feelings, especially if you are grieving the loss of a loved one. Cele-brations take on different meanings as you work through the emotions of grief. Do you attend every party you are invited to? Do you decorate your home the same as before the death of a loved one? Do you maintain family traditions, or create new ones? Whether the loss is recent or old, you have to determine what kind of celebration or remembrance is right for you.

ALTAR SERVER MINISTRY

Altar serving during the mass is a very important ministry. We are looking for girls and boys from grades 4-12. The altar server assists the priest and deacon during mass. There are also opportunities to help during Advent, Lent, and First Com-munion and Confirmation celebra-tions. Altar serving training will take place on January 21 & 28, or Febru-ary 4 & 11, 2018. If you have any questions please contact Angela Skrobar at [email protected] or 203-894-5460.

And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.

-John 1:14

SACRAMENTS The seven sacraments; Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Matrimony, and Holy Orders, are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacra-ment. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office, learn more about, and partic-ipate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program.

Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faith-community may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register.

Eucharist “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoev-er believes in me will never thirst.’” John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be re-ceived daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request.

Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirma-tion, the baptized person is “sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit” and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ.

Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God’s boundless mercy. Time for con-fession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Jo-seph’s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury.

Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole per-son, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilita-tion facility, or at home, please call the parish office.

Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the hus-band and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catho-lics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. At-tendance at the Diocesan Mar-riage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandato-ry. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning.

Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood re-spond generously to God’s call using the words of the prophet, “here I am, send me” (Is 6:8). For more information about voca-tions to the priesthood and diaco-nate, please visit www.usccb.org.
