Esto dice el Señor Dios: “Yo tomaré un renue-vo de la copa de un gran cedro, de su más alta rama cortaré un retoño. Lo plantaré en la cima de un monte excelso y sublime. Lo plantaré en la montaña más alta de Israel. Echará ramas, dará fruto y se convertirá en un cedro magnífi-co. En él anidarán toda clase de pájaros y descansarán al abrigo de sus ramas. Así, to-dos los árboles del campo sa-brán que yo, el Señor, humillo los árboles altos y elevo los ár-boles pequeños; que seco los árboles lozanos y hago florecer los árboles secos. Yo, el Señor, lo he dicho y lo haré”.

Thus says the Lord GOD: I, too, will take from the crest of the cedar, from its topmost branches tear off a tender shoot, and plant it on a high and lofty mountain; on the mountain heights of Israel I will plant it. It shall put forth branches and bear fruit, and become a majestic cedar. Birds of eve-ry kind shall dwell beneath it, every winged thing in the shade of its boughs. Hermanos: Siempre tenemos confianza, aun-que sabemos que, mientras vivimos en el cuer-po, estamos desterrados, lejos del Señor. Cami-namos guiados por la fe, sin ver todavía. Esta-mos, pues, llenos de confianza y preferimos sa-lir de este cuerpo para vivir con el Señor. Por eso procuramos agradarle, en el destierro o en la patria. Porque todos tendremos que compa-recer ante el tribunal de Cristo, para recibir el premio o el castigo por lo que hayamos hecho en esta vida.

Jesus said to the crowds: “This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and through it all the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come.” He said, “To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.” With many such parables he spoke the word to them as they were able to un-derstand it. Without parables he did not speak to them, but to his own disciples he explained eve-rything in private.

Brothers and sisters: We are always coura-geous, although we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yet we are courageous, and we would rather leave the body and go home to the Lord. Therefore, we aspire to please him, whether we are at home or away. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may re-ceive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a la multitud: “El Reino de Dios se parece a lo que su-cede cuando un hombre siembra la semilla en la tie-rra: que pasan las noches y los días, y sin que él sepa cómo, la semilla germina y crece; y la tierra, por sí so-la, va produciendo el fruto: primero los tallos, luego las espigas y después los granos en las espigas. Y cuando ya están maduros los granos, el hombre echa mano de la hoz, pues ha llegado el tiempo de la cosecha”. Les dijo también: “¿Con qué compararemos el Reino de Dios? ¿Con qué parábola lo podremos representar? Es como una semilla de mostaza que, cuando se siembra, es la más pequeña de las semillas; pero una vez sembrada, crece y se convierte en el mayor de los arbustos y echa ra-mas tan grandes, que los pájaros pueden anidar a su sombra”. Y con otras muchas parábolas se-mejantes les estuvo exponiendo su mensaje, de acuerdo con lo que ellos podían entender. Y no les hablaba sino en parábolas; pero a sus discí-pulos les explicaba todo en privado.

THE U.S.C.C.B. HAS DESIGNATED THE TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO

JULY 4TH AS FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM

SUNDAYS REFLECTION

On Sundays in Ordinary Time, the Old Testa-ment reading is selected for the light it sheds on the day’s Gospel. Today, Ezekiel sees God lift-ing up the lowly tree and making the withered tree bloom. So in the second paraable of to-day’s Gospel, Jesus encourages us by promis-ing that, as fragile seeds grow into an abundant harvest, and the tiny mustard seed into a hearty plant, so God will grow the kingdom from small beginnings to an instrument of salvation for all. In the first parable, the land yields fruit “of its own accord” (Mark 4:28). Not only is the initia-tive God’s, but the parable teaches that the seed’s growth, though invisible at first, is actual-ly unstoppable! To be sure, those who depend on the impressive or dramatic in order to be convinced or encouraged will be disappointed in the slow unfolding of the kingdom that Jesus announces. But for those who do accept the kingdom, all is grace, and that grace is certain.

Though the second reading is not coordinat-ed with either the first reading or Gospel on these Sundays, today’s is thematically appropri-ate. Saint Paul argues that our experience of God’s trustworthiness thus far should make us a people of undaunted courage and unshakeable faith. But at the same time Paul warns that faith should also make us aware of our responsibility to do good.

The U.S.C.C.B. has designated the two weeks prior to July 4th as Fortnight for Freedom. This year the theme is “Freedom To Bear Witness.” It is hoped that The Fortnight for Freedom will be marked in parishes around the diocese. The parishes in the diocese may observe the time by varied and different events as determined by the pastors and interested parishioners and par-ish organizations. The fortnight can be promot-ed in individual parishes in many different ways and the following URL provides for some sug-gestions as to how parishes might arrange dif-ferent events in observance of the period of prayer for religious freedom. Durante los domingos del Tiempo Ordina-rio, la lectura del Antiguo Testamento se rela-ciona con el tema del Evangelio de ese domin-go. Hoy Ezequiel ve a Dios elevar los árboles pequeños y florecer los árboles secos. Y en las parábolas del Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos ani-ma poniendo como ejemplos el fruto abundan-te que puede dar una semilla y que la semilla tan pequeña de mostaza crece y se convierte en uno de los arbustos más grandes, y así es Dios quien hace crecer el Reino de un peque-ño comienzo a un instrumento de salvación pa-ra todos. En la primera parábola la tierra por sí sola produce el fruto (Marcos 4:28). Además de la iniciativa de Dios, la parábola enseña que el crecimiento de la semilla, al principio invisible, no se puede detener. Para estar seguros, las personas que dependen de lo que impresiona o llama fuertemente la atención para estar con-vencidas o animadas pues van a estar decep-cionadas en lo despacio que se hace realidad

el reino que Jesús anunció. Pero para quienes aceptan el reino, todo es gracia y la gracia es verda-dera.

Aún cuando la segunda lectura no se relaciona ni con la primera ni con el Evangelio durante estos domingos; hay que considerar el mensaje que tiene la de hoy. San Pablo afirma que en nuestro camino de fe confiamos en Dios y esto debe hacernos un pueblo de valor indomable y fe inquebranta-ble. Y al mismo tiempo Pablo nos advierte que la fe también debe hacernos consientes de nuestra responsabilidad de hacer el bien.

Fr. Luis Rundi will be here next week to speak about Food for the Poor, a ministry that pro-vides food, housing and more for the poor in 17 countries in the Caribbean and Central Ameri-ca. More than 95 cents of every dollar raised goes to alleviate these needs.

We would like to thank all the Catechists for their dedication and hard work throughout the year. Without you we could not have our Cate-chism program. The parents are the first to teach the children about their faith with prayer and bringing them to Sunday mass, but after them you step in to help children in the educa-tion of their faith. You take the time to listen to the questions they might have and teach these young ones the deeper meaning of our faith and for this we thank you.
