Readings spiritual
Reading the word of God is indispensable. The sacred Scrip-
ture is also a necessary part and parcel of it divine and you
must be attentive to her in the church, because he has a great
deal of importance to our spiritual life. But we need to feed
and also of the word of God in the house, especially when the
circumstances do not allow us to go often into the offices.
The preaching of the priest at the church, y, at home, reading
the works of the parents and doctors of the church are the
best means to help us to understand the word of God.
The sacred Scripture tells us some of the real life divine and
our parents teach us how we can in the various circumstances
to receive this life and live the life of real. We must raise the
prayer for spiritual reading.

Razed by Terror Attacks, a Church Will Rise Anew Thirteen years ago, a small Greek Orthodox church with a ringing rooftop bell offered a reprieve from the city’s furious
financial nerve center, until it was crushed when the World Trade Center’s south tower collapsed on Sept. 11. On Satur-
day, church officials blessed the ground where the new St. Nicholas church would rise.
The original four-story building, its whitewashed sides surrounded by a parking lot, was home to a congregation of some
70 families. It was the only religious building destroyed during the attacks. New York officials and church leaders vowed
to rebuild, but the process has been marred by disputes and prolonged negotiations. The ceremony on Saturday, con-
ducted by high-ranking members of the Greek Orthodox Church, was muted but hopeful. Under overcast skies that occa-
sionally gave glimpses of the sun, Sen. Charles E. Schumer of New York and former officials including Mayor David N.
Dinkins and Gov. George E. Pataki were among the large crowd. The event,
held on an undecorated concrete pavil- ion surrounded by dozens of steel
foundation beams, mirrored a traditional service. Altar boys walked through
the hushed audience, a choir sang hymns and church leaders talked of
hope and resilience. After the ground was blessed, Mr. Pataki, who left
office at the end of 2006, took the stage amid the bishops and deacons and
spoke of the initial promise to rebuild and the bumpy road that fol-
lowed.“It was easy to say,” he said. “It was harder to do.” The ceremony,
he said, represented more than the resur- rection of a small and vanquished
city church. “We were attacked not be- cause of what we do wrong, but
because of what we do right,” Mr. Pataki said. Democracy, he said,
“came from Greece.” He concluded by adding: “Today my name is Geor-
gios Patakis.” The new structure, to be called the St. Nicholas National
Shrine, will be at Liberty Street, directly across from the National September
11 Memorial waterfalls, and will sit more than 20 feet above ground
level. Officials said they hoped construction would be finished by 2017. During the ceremony, Archbishop Demetrios,
the spiritual leader of Greek Orthodox Christians of America, recounted how after the attacks “the church was not there.
Instead we saw a hole, with a depth of 7 to 10 feet.” The scene, he said, was merely the remnants of a “one-time charm-
ing little church.” He applauded the shrine’s architect, Santiago Calatrava. The Rev. Evagoras Constantinides, a church
spokesman, explained that once completed, the Byzantine-inspired structure will “glow from the inside,” through the
combination of light marble fused with glass and backlit with LEDs. Mr. Schumer’s speech further conveyed a story of
triumph through the church’s odyssey.
“Like a phoenix rising from the ashes,” he said, “this church will show the resilience and for-titude of St. Nicholas and of all New Yorkers.”

FASTING IN ORTHODOX CHURCH
Fasting is an important step in the development of spiritual life instrument. It is the Lord Himself
who gave us the example, and after many saints, beginning with John the Baptist. Fasting is an ex-
ercise that helped to bring the body and soul to the spirit, and therefore God. At the same time, it is
a powerful weapon in the fight against Satan.
The Church has established fasting periods before the holidays of Easter, Christmas, and Dormition
of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and on certain other days, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Sacred Scripture and liturgical texts, especially those of Lent, tell us about the qualities required
fasting. From this it also occupy the Fathers in their writings. There is no prove that fasting is nec-
essary and beware of all hypocrisy. Christ himself tells us (Matthew 6:18).
Fasting helps us repentance. The Christian must always suppress envy and evil impulses, be
moderation in everything, regularly dominate the body's needs, and fasting helps you do.
Fasting is not just an exercise conti-
nence, but brings good works. It is this
aspect of fasting that the Church empha-
sizes his Lenten hymns. For example:
"fasting with our bodies, siblings, also
we fast with our spirit, all unjust de-
stroying alliance ... give bread to the
hungry, we drive to beggars and home-
less into our homes" (Tuesday of
the first week of Lent) .
This fast, expressed in particular by com-
plete abstinence from food, is meant to re-
mind us strongly that all our earthly life is
a preparation for the fullness of life of the
righteous.
The incarnation is already the begin-
ning of that new life in union with God
and with our brothers in Christ. That is why the sacrament takes the burden of fasting according to
the word of Jesus Christ himself: "Is can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with
them?" (Mark 2:19). But until we receive the Holy Mysteries, fasting is essential to us, because we
are waiting for Him to come and we thirst for a new meeting with him, not only in the Eucharist
but also in the Second Coming.
Freeing of fasting after Communion, the Church strengthens in us the awareness that the Bride-
groom has come upon us now. Waiting on the one hand, and started performing and, secondly, are
inherent in the divine and human nature of the Church; is what finds expression in its liturgical life
with continuous alteration between fasting and joy after communion.
The holidays and Sundays, the day for the Eucharist, which occur in a period of fasting, for exam-
ple, during Lent, limiting food continues even after Communion, but fasting is then reduced .
