1685 was an important year for music in that three major composers were born within a few months of each other: Johann Sebastian Bach, Domenico Scarlatti and George Frideric Handel, whose work is being celebrated today.
Handel, born in Germany, though a naturalised Englishman from 1726, was a cosmopolitan composer, widely travelled, conversant with all the musical trends of his day. He wrote orchestral music, chamber works, operas, oratorios with equal facility and this concert has been planned to give some idea of his versatility and his commonsense. He knew that the way to advancement was through royal patronage so it was not surprising to find him writing music for the coronation of George II in 1727: 'Zadok the Priest' and a suite of pieces to celebrate the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1749: the music for the 'Royal Fireworks.' Nevertheless, in the early eighteenth century, opera was the most popular form and between 1705 and 1741 he wrote forty-six! 'Ezio' was written in 1732 and in the trio 'Happy We' the three protagonists sing of their delight in going to war in order to prove their courage and impress their queen, Floridante. Five years later Handel's health cracked under the strain of his operatic work, for he was theatre manager, business executive as well as composer and in any case, the fashion for operas was waning. So he
turned to writing oratorios and these remain his most original contribution to music. 'Messiah' is not only his most popular example, it is also unique, being the only one based on the New Testament. The glories of these sacred works are to be found in the choruses of which 'Hallelujah' is the most famous. It is said that when King George heard it, he was so impressed that he stood up and did not return to his seat until its conclusion. Protocol demanded that no-one could sit if the monarch stood and so the whole audience rose with the king. It has become something of a custom ever since for audiences to stand when this chorus is performed, though this is not obligatory!
For one hundred and fifty years after his death, Handel's was the dominant influence on English music, and together with Bach, he remains at the pinnacle of achievement in late Baroque music.
