Still coming with thankful hearts?

As we celebrate Harvest over the next fewweeks, we will no doubt sing Come ye thankfulpeople come. As an early Harvest draws to anend and we look forward to celebrating, it isworth pausing to ask how thankful our heartsreally are.It’s been an interesting year in terms ofweather. The pre-Christmas snowfall in thisarea, and the Beast from the East in March, brought bitterly cold weather. Wecomplained about the cold, the ice and the inconvenience of snow whilst childrenenjoyed unexpected ‘snow days’ to enjoy playing in the snow.Spring was long, cold, wet and miserable. We rejoiced when we were catapultedinto summer then we moaned that it was too hot and lived in fear of hosepipe bans.Now Autumn seems to have arrived early, and we are missing the summer already.Weather is an important feature of social conversation in this country. Yet we areslow to think about the ways in which our varied and unpredictable weather affectsfar more than our conversation.For farmers and other food producers such as fishermen, the weather has a dailyimpact on lives and businesses. A long, wet, slow spring meant that winter andspring-sown crops didn’t grow. The Beast from the East made for a difficult lambingseason. Drought followed with the need to feed livestock feed that had beenproduced for the winter.The result of our topsy turvy weather? According to the Centre for Economic andBusiness Research we can expect our monthly shopping bills to rise by £7.15 permonth. We may not have noticed yet, but we will. Between March and July thewholesale price farmers receive for the food they produce rose by 80% for carrots,although they’ve only gone up 41% in the shops at the moment. Bread prices haverisen by 1/5 and strawberries by 28% (although supermarkets are still selling 2packs for £3 as they did last year). Meat will fall in price initially because farmerssold livestock during the drought to reduce the costs of feed, but it too will risebecause of costs involved in feeding livestock through the drought.How thankful are we feeling now, knowing we will have to pay more for our food?The challenge of Harvest is that we remember to say ‘Thank you’ regardless ofhow good the harvest is. There is a harvest, and compared with many in the world,there is much to be thankful for. How about setting ourselves a challenge next timewe feel like grumbling about the weather or the price of our shop, how aboutpausing to say ‘Thank you’ instead?

it to be transported?

Fiona Sloyan (our resident beekeeper) invited five Year 5 & 6 children to herhome where they had a ‘sticky’ time extracting honey from honey framesmade by our own Calveley bees. The children carefully removed a thin layer

of wax to expose the honey. This was thenput in a metal drum and with the aid ofcentrifugalforce(childrenspinning ahandlefast) waspulled outof theframes.

The children then took great delight inwatching the golden honey pour out of thedrum into a sieve & bucket. The honey will rest for a couple of days to removeair bubbles and then it will be put into jars and labelled. Look out for ‘Honeyfor Sale’ at the Christmas Fair!!!’

A Parish RemembersRemembering Corporal John George Rathbone of WettenhallAn afternoon Tea Party and service of commemoration to remember a localhero.

Corporal John GeorgeRathbone [known as Jackto his family] lost his lifetowards the end of WorldWar I at Poperinge inBelgium on 19th August1918. He is buried there ina military grave with ‘Peace,perfect peace’ as hisepithet; he was just 26years old.Born in Wettenhall, nearTarporley, he attended

Calveley School and before war broke out he was engaged to be married andworking as a chauffeur in Cuddington.100 years to the day when he gavehis life for King and country, he wasremembered with honour at StDavid’s Church, Wettenhall with anafternoon tea party and Churchservice. The service was attended byhis niece Mrs Gladys Heppell, herdaughter Susan, son in law Jeremyand grandson Ben. CorporalRathbone’s nephew, Harry Tickle,was unable to attend the service andwas represented by his grandson,James Roberts, along with his wife Siobhan. James gave a moving account ofvisiting Poperinge to see Corporal Rathbone’s grave, with the sense of pride and

gratitude that the visit instilled.During the Act of Remembrance , led byRev Anne Lawson, David Waring[standard bearer to the CheshireRegiment] and Graham Rathbone [norelation] represented Tarporley RoyalBritish Legion as part of the ‘There, ButNot There’ commemoration of thecentenary of the ending of hostilities inWWI.

After the service everyone enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea - St.David’s is justlyfamous for it’s food.Long term memories of the event include a beautiful acrylic image of Corporal

Rathbone, designed as part of the“There but not There” commemorationand mounted by Chris Pope and PeteWebb. The acrylic silhouette will help toconnect communities and remembersoldiers lost a century ago. At the frontof the church is a planter with poppies,forget-me-nots and a ‘Peace’ rose,arranged by Brenda Brockbank. HelenMoss has recently registered theSt.David’s memorial to Corporal

Rathbone with the register held by the Imperial War Museum – gone but notforgotten.At the end of the afternoon a collection raised funds for ‘Help for Heroes’ and theHaig Fund ‘Poppy’ Appeal.A memorable, moving and fitting tribute to a local man who gave his life in theservice of his Country and King.

CORPORAL RATHBONE AT CHESTER CATHEDRAL

During September an exhibition to commemorate theCentenary of the end of the Great War was held in ChesterCathedral. We were thrilled that the figure of CorporalRathbone was on display in the cloisters for everyone to see.

FOOTNOTE TO CORPORAL RATHBONE COMMEMORATIONSERVICE...…It was with great sadness that we heard just one week following the service,that Harry Tickle, the nephew of Corporal Rathbone, died in TarporleyHospital. Harry was visited by his family on the evening of the service, andenjoyed hearing all about the event and holding the smaller version of the'There but not There' replica of his Uncle Jack. His last week was spentreminiscing on his life in Wettenhall and the memories of a special afternoonto honour his family. Harrys funeral service and burial took place at St.Peters, Waverton on 10th September. Our thoughts and prayers are with allhis family at this sad time.

As was noted briefly last month, wewere very sorry to hear of Alan'sdeath, on 12th August. Alan hadbeen licensed as a Reader inOctober 1998 with Ann Nicholasand Isobel Burnley, just after MarkRylands left our parishes. He servedin these parishes for a few yearsbefore returning to minister atGresty Road Railway Mission inCrewe. He will be rememberedduring his time here as an excellentpreacher and enthusiastic leader ofstudy groups and house groupswhere there was always livelydiscussion; and a helper at theWednesday morning communionservice at Acton.Many friends and colleagues fromthe churches where he had servedcame to his funeral at Acton, tomourn the loss of a friend, but alsoto give thanks for the life of a faithfulservant of God whose example andwitness touched many people. Wewill continue to remember Janet andhis family in our prayers.

St Oswald’s School NewsThe start of a new academic year has arrived and we would like to welcome allour new arrivals in to school including all the new reception children startingschool for the first time as well as several new families joining the St. Oswald'sSchool family.

One week in to the new term and things have got off to a very exciting start withour whole school taking part in a two day big art project involving an artist cominginto each class to help design our very own St. Oswald's Poppy cascade like theTower of London style. Each class continued this with doing some of their ownWW1 art work for display. We are marking the forthcoming centenaryCommemorations for Armistice Day with a whole school project entitled 'We willRemember'. Our younger children in Nursery and Reception will be learningabout people around us that help and then the rest of our school will be learningabout WW1. This will be an exciting whole school cross curricula project which

will culminate in a trip to the Imperial WarMuseum in Manchester as well as takingpart in the 'We will Remember' project takingplace across Nantwich in November.

We are looking forward to a very busy andexciting Autumn Term here at St. Oswald'swhich wouldn't be the same without thetraditional Harvest Service and Supper backat school which will be held on Friday 5thOctober.

Rural Policing

Introducing a new initiative for Rural PolicingNicky and I have covered the rural ‘beat’ for over 14 years and our area ofgeographical responsibility is extensive – we cover a policing area ofapproximately 130 square miles with a population size of approximately 30,0000people. Vickie Wallace supports our service during times of holiday etc.To achieve optimum efficiency and manage our patch more effectively, we areconstantly evaluating our policing practices and exploring new and innovativemethods of working. To this end, we are grateful to Acton Church for supportingus in our plans to introduce a rural police ‘Pop-Up’ station - operating at theChurch on a monthly basis. We will base ourselves at Acton Church between09.30hrs – 10.30hrs on the 1st Monday of each month (unless it is a Bank Holiday- when we will attend on the 2nd

Monday in the month). We willcommence this new service on 1st

October 2018 when we will beavailable to welcome anyone whowishes to have a chat.Our vision is to set up ‘Pop-Up’rural police stations at pointsacross our territory with the aim ofbecoming more visible, accessibleand approachable to the localcommunities. We want to make iteven easier for the community tocome and talk to us. Much ruralcrime remains unreported and ourmain objective is to address this problem through adopting more integratedmethods of community working.
