PARISH VISION STATEMENTAs the Parish of Saint Columbkille, we strive to be a

welcoming, caring, Catholic family that transforms lives, proclaiming the Kingdom of God.

(Vision is about who we want to be in the future…)

PARISH MISSION STATEMENTAs missionary disciples of Jesus, being formed as a

community through Scripture and Sacraments, we are sent into the world to joyfully proclaim the Gospel with our lives.

(Mission is about what we do now…)

    GAUDETE SUNDAY REJOICING!

This weekend we light the pink advent candle and traditionally the priests wear rose colored vestments at Mass to signify that we have reached the halfway point in our journey to Christmas. We use the word Gaudete, Latin for REJOICE, to highlight the fact that God is drawing ever closer to humanity through the miraculous birth of Jesus in our world.

Maybe you have been faithfully praying and lighting your advent wreath these past two weeks or perhaps you are just finding out for the first time that something called Advent even exists. Wherever you are in life, you are called to cultivate holiness. God is calling you like John the Baptist to prepare the way of the Lord in your families, schools, workplaces, and homes by creating holy moments in everyday life. Holy moments happen when you put aside your own plans and open yourself to what you believe God is calling you to do in the moment. What do I mean? Well, you created a holy moment when you decided to contribute to the Giving Tree to purchase a gift for someone in need. You create a holy moment by being patient with that coworker who is driving you crazy. You create a holy moment when you take time to call your elderly neighbor who just returned from the hospital recovering from hip surgery. I challenge you to create a holy moment this week and prepare the world for God in the flesh. Rejoice, for the world is about to change for the better…Emmanuel, God is with us. Never forget, the Lord is with us, always!Christmas Masses, Church Capacity and COVID Safety: Christmas is going to look and feel a bit different this year than in years past. We are taking extra precautions to clean and sanitize the church before our Christmas Masses. It is not a mortal sin to miss Mass right now as the Ohio Bishops have decided to continue dispensing Catholics from the Sunday obligation due to the pandemic. If you are feeling sick, have a pre-existing health condition or are of an advanced age please consider worshiping with us at home this year. We have 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Masess Christmas Eve and 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Masses Christmas Day. With social distancing procedures in place the church can only seat a maximum of 350 worshipers. Please keep this in mind when choosing which Christmas Mass to attend this year. In years past the most heavily attended Mass is 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve so we are planning on live streaming this Mass to our website and Facebook pages for your convenience. If you want to avoid the largest crowds and want to worship in person, please consider joining with us at 10:00 p.m. Christmas Eve or at one of the Masses Christmas Day.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the ordinary means by which adults who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed,

purposely and freely seek the living God by formally inquiring with the Catholic Church. Through dedicated instruction and spiritual accompaniment, and with the help of God, those inquiring embark upon a journey of growth and conversion so that, at the proper time, they may fruitfully receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist).

Those who are not baptized, or have been baptized in another Christian tradition, and wish to explore full communion in the Catholic Church—as well as anyone who has stopped the active practice of the Catholic faith—are invited to contact Fr. Michael at (216) 524-1987 for information regarding the RCIA process. Spiritual accompaniment is available and formal instruction is ongoing. Please join us!

Please share this information with those who may benefit!

ADVENT NIGHT PRAYERJoin Father Suso on the remaining Sundays of Advent (December 13th and 20th) for Advent Adoration and Night Prayer at 7:00 p.m. in the Church. Spend just 20 minutes with Father Suso praying Night Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours before Jesus in the Exposed Blessed Sacrament. Get your soul ready for Christmas!

WEEKLY SCRIPTURE PASSAGEAs we begin the second half of the Advent season,

let us pray together the verses from Saint Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians. Paul is offering us excellent advice about how we should live, not only in Advent but throughout every day of our life.

“Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophetic utterances. Test everything; retain what is good. Refrain from every kind of evil.

GOSPEL OF LIFE & FINANCIAL NEWS

THE GOSPEL OF LIFEThe words and deeds of Jesus and those of His Church

are not meant only for those who are sick or suffering or in some way neglected by society. On a deeper level they affect the very meaning of every person's life in its moral and spiritual dimensions. Only those who recognize that their life is marked by the evil of sin can discover in an encounter with Jesus the Saviour the truth and the authenticity of their own existence. Jesus Himself says as much: "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" (Lk 5:31-32).

But the person who, like the rich land-owner in the Gospel parable, thinks that he can make His life secure by the possession of material goods alone, is deluding himself. Life is slipping away from him, and very soon he will find himself bereft of it without ever having appreciated its real meaning: "Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?" (Lk 12:20).

    33. In Jesus' own life, from beginning to end, we find a singular "dialectic" between the experience of the uncertainty of human life and the affirmation of its value. Jesus' life is marked by uncertainty from the very moment of His birth. He is certainly accepted by the righteous, who echo Mary's immediate and joyful "yes" (cf. Lk 1:38). But there is also, from the start, rejection on the part of a world which grows hostile and looks for the child in order "to destroy him" (Mt 2:13); a world which remains indifferent and unconcerned about the fulfilment of the mystery of this life entering the world: "there was no place for them in the inn" (Lk 2:7). In this contrast between threats and insecurity on the one hand and the power of God's gift on the other, there shines forth all the more clearly the glory which radiates from the house at Nazareth and from the manger at Bethlehem: this life which is born is salvation for all humanity (cf. Lk 2:11).

Life's contradictions and risks were fully accepted by Jesus: "though he was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich" (2 Cor 8:9). The poverty of which Paul speaks is not only a stripping of divine privileges, but also a sharing in the lowliest and most vulnerable conditions of human life (cf. Phil 2:6-7). Jesus lived this poverty throughout His life, until the culminating moment of the Cross: "He humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name" (Phil 2:8-9). It is precisely by His death that Jesus reveals all the splendour and value of life, inasmuch as His self-oblation on the Cross becomes the source of new life for all people (cf. Jn 12:32). In His journeying amid contradictions and in the very loss of His life, Jesus is guided by the certainty that His life is in the hands of the Father. Consequently, on the Cross, He can say to Him: "Father, into your hands I commend My spirit!"

(Lk 23:46), that is, my life. Truly great must be the value of human life if the Son of God has taken it up and made it the instrument of the salvation of all humanity!

REFLECTION Join the St. Columbkille Youth Group in an Advent afternoon of fun, service, and prayer on Saturday, December 19th starting at 12:00 p.m. and ending after the 4:00 Mass. Grades 7-12 are

DIOCESE OF CLEVELAND TO LAUNCH NEW ADVENT/CHRISTMAS RESOURCE WEBPAGE

The season of Advent is fast approaching. It is a wonderfully meaningful time in the Church. However, this year certainly will be different as together we cope with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. All of us have been experiencing changes at Mass and other liturgical and spiritual activities due to our need to be physically distant and safe in parish gatherings. With the current pandemic guidelines in place, the question remains as to how do we best prepare our parishes, our families and ourselves to celebrate Advent and Christmas with complete intention?

With this in mind, the Diocese of Cleveland is preparing a special resource page on its website, dioceseofcleveland.org, to offer everyone a variety of user-friendly material aimed at helping to make this Advent and Christmas meaningful.

This new webpage will provide educational, formational and liturgical materials to be used by everyone to deepen their preparation and appreciation of the birth of Christ. In addition, information about how to connect with livestreamed and on-demand Masses will be available as will inspirational resources to help us fully enter into this holy season and better prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with a welcoming heart.

Watch for the new Advent/Christmas resources page posted on the diocesan website, dioceseofcleveland.org, during the week of November 23rd.

DIVINE MERCY HOLY HOURThere will be a Divine Mercy Holy Hour Sunday,

December 13th at 2:30 p.m. in Saint Monica Church. Please wear a mask. All are welcome!

OPLATKYDue to the complications from COVID, we will not be

selling oplatky this year. You can, however, buy oplatky, in packages of 4, at Henninger’s, 5227 West 137th Street, Brook Park, (216) 362-8860. Thanks for your understanding!

A ST. MALACHI THANK-YOU! This is the perfect time to thank you for being a dedicated friend of Malachi Center. This year was unlike any other and yet, you made an undeniable impact with your kindness and generosity. Thank you for your physical and monetary donations,

service and volunteer time, and presence at Malachi Center. We are a small organization and without you, we would not be capable of creating the community change we try to each year.

COVID-19 not only changed our day-to-day operations but also brought Malachi Center different and new community needs. We took a look at our services and adjusted to those needs.

This year, we held our annual summer camp for 25 1st through 8th grade children. Our summer campers were able to practice CDC guidelines and remain socially distant while still taking part in social-emotional learning activities, practicing literacy skills, and getting out and about and exploring Cleveland!

In 2020, we served 18 children in our learning pod program. This program was adapted from the After-school program starting in September and served the children during school hours every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. In a period of educational instability due to the pandemic, Malachi Center became a hub for student learning. Your donations provided 30 Chromebooks, hot meals, dividers for desktop stations, bulk snacks, PPE/masks, games, and crafts to 18 children, adapting to the changes and challenges of virtual learning.

In addition, our homeless shower program served approximately 1400 individuals, providing a clean shower, towel, and hygiene supplies to those in need.

In 2020, we distributed winter supplies to the homeless populations including hats, gloves, sweatshirts, thermal socks, emergency blankets, and hand/feet warmers. Your donation is keeping the homeless warm in spite of the unpredictability of Ohio winters.

Our Soup and God program brought 164 individuals together, providing a warm, home-cooked meal to the homeless men we serve. Your donations provided these men with fellowship, hot meals, and a break from the outdoors.

We also supplied around a hundred families with regular health and wellness supply kits. These kits included household cleaners, PPE/masks, hand sanitizer, and toiletries. Your donations provided supplies for each kit. We held a distribution day monthly to our families in need!

Thank you for all your help, generosity, and kindness in the midst of uncertainty. You make all the difference here at Malachi Center. Happy Holidays! We look forward to continuing to serve the community.
