JAN PEEK SHELTER NEEDS HELP St. Columbanus provides a dinner on the first Sat-urday of each month for the residents of the Jan Peek Shelter. The same handful of parishioners has been participating, so we’re hoping to get a few new volunteers willing to lend a helping hand. This opportunity consists of cooking dinner for approxi-mately 20 people once a year. If you cannot cook the entire meal, perhaps you could prepare one course and have friends prepare other courses. Please call Jeni Schutrick-Vitiello at 914-930-8605 for more information or to sign up. Thank you for helping out in this meaningful way.

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS

Envelopes are now available in the vestibules of both churches to make a monetary donation in hon-or of loved ones. These donations will be used to defray the cost of Christmas flowers for both churches. Please drop off or mail your envelopes to the Rectory, indicating the name(s) of the donor(s) and honoree(s).

DECEMBER 17, 2017 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH_ _#481/PAGE 4

This Monday, Dec. 18, is Reconciliation Monday when most parishes in the archdiocese will hear confessions from 4 to 8 pm in preparation for Christmas. Confession is a sacrament through which we receive grace as well as relieve ourselves of the burden of sin that can affect our dispositions and personalities. St. Augustine said that we should prepare for the first coming of Christ (at Christmas) so we do not need to fear His second coming (when He calls us from this life). Pope JohnPaul II said, “Instead, it is necessary to understand that the whole of our life must be an ‘advent,’ a vigilant awaiting of the final coming of Christ. To predispose our mind to welcome the Lord who, as we say in the Creed, ‘one day will come to judge the living and the dead,’ we must learn to recognize him as present in the events of daily life.” Some other quotes from saints on confession: A humble confession displeases Satan and, if he could, he would make you omit Holy Communion. - Imitation of Christ Good Christians make an examination of conscience and an act of contrition every evening. There was a devout monk lying at the point of death; when his Superior came and told him to make his confession, he answered: "Blessed be God! I have for thirty years made an examination of conscience every evening, and have made my confession every day as if I were at the point of death." - St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori My daughter, just as you prepare in My presence, so also you make your confession before Me. The person of the priest is, for Me, only a screen. Never analyse what sort of a priest it is that I am making use of; open your soul in confession as you would to Me, and I will fill it with My light. (1725) -St. Faustina, Divine Mercy in My Soul The confession of evil works is the first beginning of good works. -St. Augustine Go to your confessor; open your heart to him; display to him all the recesses of your soul; take the advice that he will give you with the utmost humility and simplicity. For God, Who has an infinite love for obedience, fre-quently renders profitable the counsels we take from others, but especially from those who are the guides of our souls. -St. Francis de Sales These is no better way to prepare for Christmas than to make a good confession. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo
