From the Pastor’s Pen

225th Anniversary Mass– 6 November 2016 St. Charles Borromeo School and Parish School of Religion Saints

Be Proud Borromeo! Be Thankful to your Jesus!

Wow! I could not be more filled with pride, joy and gratitude in our wonderful Borromeo Family. I hope you, too, felt the miraculous power of God the Holy Spirit making us -One Holy Communion in Jesus -One Holy Community of Acceptance at both our 225th Dinner Gala and Mass. Each of you showed how much you love our St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Family by coming together for the Gala Banquet and the Eucharistic Banquet. You came to cele-brate 225 years of Jesus’ love working through us all. We need to celebrate as we too often take for granted each other, our Church Family and our love shown in so many ways every day and week. The huge crowd at Mass, overflowing in the aisles and outside, showed your love for Jesus and how we deeply influ-ence and help each other to grow. Everything went so perfect-ly, beautifully and joyfully at both Banquets. Thanks be to our Lord Jesus, and each one of you of all kinds of ages and backgrounds celebrating our oneness in Jesus. Did you not feel the Holy Spirit at work in Archbishop Carlson, and in us all? Was it not awesome to have so many diverse people worshipping God together in prayer and awesome song (and dancing together so joyfully at the Dinner/Dance)? We cannot thank enough our 225th Chairperson, Ann Tollefson and Jenny Luebbers, and so many others, who worked all year so hard, competently and joyfully. Talk about peak God Moments-this 225th Mass and Gala Dinner/Dance was one of the best in my life and in our parish. God is working Miracles in us!

Archbishop Carlson’s Homily– November 6, 2016 THE 225TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHURCH OF SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO Your parish is named after St. Charles Borromeo, one of the great and holy men of the sixteenth century, who worked for a —true and much needed—reformation with the Church; working to correct real abuses and evil living to re-move the basic excuses for the destructive and false reformation which was working such havoc in Europe. With St. Pius the V, St. Phillip Neri, and St. Ignatius of Loyola, he is considered one of the four great leaders of the so-called Counter Reformation helping to revise the Breviary and the Roman Missal. The words from the call of the Prophet Jeremiah—-”Say not “I am too young” speak powerfully of St. Charles own call receiv-ing clerical tonsure at twelve and being made a Cardinal of the Church at the age of 22 by his uncle, the Pope. Someone becoming a Cardinal at the age of 22 would not happen in our day, but St. Paul gives us a good frame work to understand the grace and also the humility of this great saint when he says in our second reading, “we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us.” And for 225 years those varied gifts—from people of faith have been the backbone of this great parish (225 years is a long time. Are there any descendants of the original families; one way to mark a parish is it sacramental life—those baptized, confirmed, wed here, etc…) For more than two centuries, this parish community has welcomed newcomers and made them feel at home, calling upon their gifts to build up the Body of Christ. In our second reading, St. Paul is speaking to the Ephesians and he says, ”you are no longer strangers and sojourner, but you are fellow citi-zens with the saints and members of the household of God. …(With) Christ Jesus, Himself, being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows…” (Continued next page)

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family!

A Holy Community through Holy Communion. Your brother in Jesus

Archbishop Carlson homily continued from previous page… This is a parish rich in culture and diversity, calling upon all God’s people to come together sharing their unique gifts and talents. Pope Francis lists five things every parish must practice: 1. Don’t be a customs office creating hoops for people in

jump through, but rather respond to the need. 2. Make sure the parish is welcoming like coming home to

your mother’s home. 3. Practice missionary dynamism, putting those distant

from the Church first. 4. Get everyone involved. 5. Don’t’ gossip or cause divisions. 6. I believe St. Augustine gets it right when he says, “The Church will shake if its foundation shakes, but can Christ shake? As long as Christ does not shake, so shall the Church never weaken until the end time.” We give thanks for 225 years and ask the Lord to send the Holy Spirit to lead us into the future. As the gospel remind us, we ask Jesus that this par-ish family will be always blessed with unity, perseverance in the faith, the joy of Christ and a holiness that makes you aware of the gentle promptings of the Holy Spirit. This is accomplished every time the Word of God is broken open ad our pastors call us to share in the Eucharist banquet. Congratulations as you celebrate more than two centuries of faith.

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development funds programs in communities across the United States. By giving a hand up, rather than a handout, CCHD helps people living in poverty, join together to identify problems, make deci-sions and find ways to improve their lives and neighborhoods. Your support helps to end poverty through building solidarity in our communities. Working together, we can reach out to our brothers and sisters living on the periphery of society. DONATE. Your generous support in the parish collection and throughout the year is vital to CCHD’s anti-poverty mission and creates real change. LEARN. CCHD offers Awareness programs to learn more about poverty and those affected by it. PRAY for those who give and those who receive CCHD Sup-port, in Thanksgiving for generous donors and to ask support for those who are still struggling. Next week’s collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) needs your help. CCHD was founded to break the cycle of poverty in the United States by funding or-ganizations that help individuals help themselves. Your contri-bution will defend human dignity and reach out to those living on the margins. On the weekend of November 19/20, please give generously to the CCHD collection.

Joke of the Week

A Catholic missionary was walking in Africa when he heard the ominous padding of a lion behind

him. “Oh, Lord,” prayed the missionary.

“Grant in Thy goodness that the lion walking be-hind me is a good Catholic lion.”

And then, in the silence, he heard the lion praying, “ Bless us our Lord…….”

Sacred Conversations on Race + Action A Request for Your Support Sunday, Nov. 13

The Sacred Conversations program now has three com-

mittees––education, law enforcement, and housing––working

to change policies that often result in unequal opportunities for

minority children and adults. Members of the education committee

from our parish and other congregations have met with the super-

intendents and school board presidents in the St. Charles, Or-

chard Farms, Francis Howell, and Fort Zumwalt districts.

We ask your support in our education committee’s first

goal: a commitment by those school districts to reduce out-of-

school suspensions of children in pre-school through third grade.

Missouri has one of the highest rates of suspensions in the coun-

try of children those ages, and minority children are suspended at

disproportionately higher rates. As parents and teachers know,

out-of-school suspensions often cause children to fall behind in

school work, be viewed as trouble-makers, and lose interest in

school. One suspension often leads to others, and teens who

have been suspended are more likely to drop out of school, re-

ducing their chances for a good job and stable family life.

The Sacred Conversations programs in St. Louis County

and St. Louis City share this first goal. We have invited superin-

tendents and school board presidents in all three counties to com-

mit to reducing out-of-school suspensions children in pre-school

through grade 3 at a Regional School Assembly on Sunday, Nov.

13, 3:00 to 5:00 pm, at Maplewood Richmond Heights High

School, 7539 Manchester Road.

Prayer for Peace and Healing

By Father James Martin, S.J.

Fountain of Everlasting Peace and Healing Balm, Wash over our wounds of war, violence, and hatred, Scrub deep the stains that destroy the fabric of Your

Existence, Mend the tattered threads of the Cloak of Your Majes-

ty, The delicate web of the universe which is Your Life

and Love

A prophet of non-violence You have raised up for Truth,

Reflecting the Source of Your Unfathomable Wisdom, Flowing from the One Great Abyss of Creation's Glory,

Open our minds to hear Your Voice speaking Peace this day,

Born from One Cosmic Egg, we are one family in You,

Help us to learn forgiveness, kindness, tolerance, Greatness of mind and heart,

So that destroying all weapons of war, Burying all animosities and differences,

We may hear the Divine Harmony of Your Love, Preserving our blue-jewel-earth-planet,

Spinning the dance of a Mother's Infinite Tenderness, That draws all into Unity in one Compassionate Heart. Bestow the Blissful Smile of sun and rain which is Your

Divine Presence

Making Peace grow in our hearts as seeds for a new

era, Birthing the song of non-violence

Which blesses our world with Peace Eternal.

We ask you to pray for a large turnout and commitments by

many districts on Nov. 13. If possible, please join our Borromeo

group that day to support and applaud the districts that make

the commitment. We welcome high school and college stu-

dents! If you would like to car pool or join us at Maplewood

Richmond Heights Nov. 13, please contact Mary Harrison at

636-949-8268 or [email protected].

The cost per prayer book is only $5.00, and they would be a big help to any child struggling to learn their prayers, or even for an adult, who was needing to brush up on their prayers. They are small enough to fit in a ladies purse or would make a nice gift if you were going to visit someone in the hospital.

St. Vincent often asked this simple questions: “What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my place now? “ Ask yourself, “ What would Jesus Christ do?” and then put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box so that those who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving.

When Jesus rose from the dead, he showed his disciples that even death will be overcome by God. In today's Gospel, he expands that to include most of the bad things that can hap-pen to both non-believers and disciples alike. Starting with the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem, Jesus mentions most of the scary things that people thought would bring the end of the world. He gives two pieces of advice. First, don't be fooled by anyone who says this is the end or who claims to be Jesus. When Jesus comes again, there will be no doubt about who it is. You won't have to learn about it on the evening news. Then, don't be terrified by natural disasters or wars. Wars, epidemics, earthquakes, and the rest happen throughout history and will happen again. As disciples, we hope we would respond to disasters not with fear, but with love. Believers can voluntarily help those af-fected, comfort the survivors, or help rebuild their homes or schools. You may choose to give at a blood drive or donate to one of the charities that help disaster victims. People have welcomed strangers into their homes after a flood or hurri-cane has destroyed a neighborhood. Jesus never says that his disciples would be given awards for their acts of charity. In the second half of the Gospel, he says that his disciples would be persecuted, hated, and even be-trayed by their own families. Jesus has advice for that situa-tion, too. He presents it as an opportunity to give testimony, or witness, to our faith. His advice sounds strange at first. Unlike a modern lawyer, who practices with a witness before they go into the courtroom, Jesus tells us "not to prepare your defense," but to let him give us the words. I suspect that he means not to worry about what you might say, lest you become scared speechless. If you let him, Jesus will "prepare" you with the scripture readings, your pastor's homilies, and your own prayer life. All of these can help open us to the gifts of the Spirit, who helps us proclaim our faith without fear. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
