From the Pastor’s Pen

My name is Deacon Justin Palmer and I am a semi-narian for the Diocese of Salina in Kansas, where I grew up in the small town of Lucas. I am the fourth of six children, three boys and a three girls.

Growing up I never thought about becoming a priest. During my years of high school I was so focused on other things like sports and work that the priesthood wasn’t even on the radar. However, during my time in college, I grew in my faith, became attached to the local Newman Cen-ter, and got to know a priest who encouraged me to consider that God may be calling me to the priesthood. He planted a tiny seed that would slowly grow throughout my time in col-lege. After graduation, I entered Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis.

I have greatly enjoyed my time in the seminary and I thank God for the opportunity to be part of the community at Kenrick-Glennon. This past April I was ordained a transi-tional deacon (transitional because I am transitioning into the priesthood). This coming June I will be ordained a priest.

I look forward to my year at your parish and I ask that you keep me in your prayers as I continue to move towards priestly ordination.

Deacon Justin Palmer

This campaign seeks to raise more than $100 million to address vitally important needs in Catholic education, as well as the needs of our own parish that cannot be met through our ordinary sources of income. Currently the efforts have raised over $55 million dollars. Our parishes are the heart of our Church and must be vibrant to prepare and nurture the next generation of Catholics. To surpass this collective goal, every parish in the Archdi-ocese will participate. Our Beyond Sunday target is $1.155 million. Borromeo Vision for our 40% With our 40% share of the proceeds from this campaign we will invest in our newest phase of schooling: THE SCB EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER, such as playground, class-room equipment and new restrooms.. In addition, we will be able to use portions of our revenue to address other educational needs of the parish and school. Please respond prayerfully and with a pledge of financial support that will help strengthen our schools, our parish and Catholic education throughout the Archdiocese. The pledge can be paid over 5 years. Please do not get upset over the amount you may be asked to pledge and please do not lower your Sunday support for our parish. Pray for God the Holy Spirit to guide you in your gift to this important campaign for the future of our young Catholic people.

Beyond Sunday Elementary School Scholarship Program Up to $2.2 million in combined elementary and high school scholarship awards are granted in the 2016-2017 school year.

The St. Charles Borromeo Journey

1977 *** 1979 For many years, after having used the facilities for storage, when the Board estimated an excess of $80,000 would be required to replace the building, the Board backed down and negotiations ended. In March 1977, Mrs. Adelaide Dyer and her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Ohrman, proposed a new idea: help-ing the parish build its own gymnasium by donating over $100,000. Cardinal John Carberry approved the generous offer and Fr. Owens worked out the details with the donors, agreeing to name the facility “St. Charles Borromeo Parish Dyer Memorial Gymnasium,” and to construct it on the southeast side of Fifth and Lewis streets. Fr. Owens nominated Parish Board officer Henry Elmendorf to handle negotiations con-cerning the Dyer Center. During the summer of 1977, Mrs. Dyer more than doubled the size of her donation, and Fr. Owens re-quested permission from the archdiocese to increase the size of the proposed building. Four houses occu-pied the site of the proposed center. Built many years earlier, they had all fallen into disrepair. Two elder-ly sisters from the Poese family remained in one of the houses for a time, and then agreed to move, rent-free, into the brick duplex at the southwest corner of Fourth and Lewis streets. The occupants of the other houses moved elsewhere and soon a demolition crew cleared the land. The parish broke ground on Sunday August 21, 1977. Representing her mother, Mrs. Ohrman dedicated the building project to the memory of her father, Bernard H. Dyer, and her late brother David A. Dyer, who had served as prosecuting attorney for St. Charles County before his death in 1944 during World War II. At last, on Sept. 26, 1979, Bishop John N. Wurm, assisted by Fr. Owens, dedicated the completed Dyer Center. Henry Elmendorf served as master of ceremonies, and Mayor Doug Boschert gave the welcoming address. Additional speakers, Ken Kapeller, as president of the School Board, and School Principal, Sister Berenice Hartke also addressed the crowd followed by a reception in the school cafeteria. Three ramshackle houses remained along Fourth Street behind the Dyer Center, including the corner house into which the parish had moved the elderly Poese sisters. The parish eventually bought the properties and had two of the houses torn down. On May 10, 1981, in recognition of Fr. Owens’ fortieth anniversary as a priest and his twenty-fifth anniversary as pastor, the parish donated the parcels of land to the archdio-cese for the use of St. Charles Borromeo Parish. Eventually torn down in 1990, the corner house remained the home of the Poese sisters as long as the women were able to live independently.

El Camino de St. Charles Borromeo

1977 *** 1979

…cortesía de St. Charles Borromeo: 200 Years of Faith, por Jo Ann Brown. Gospel Reflection: (Luke 16:1-13)Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Prudent decisiveness that this gospel recommends means that we recognize that all our choices in daily living are really choices for eternal life. We hon-estly try to live good lives. When oppor-tunities present themselves to act in a Christian way, most of us respond ap-propriately most of the time. This gos-pel challenges us to take this one step further. With an eye to the future, we must surrender ourselves to searching out opportunities to live the paschal mystery. There is such an urgency about discipleship that we cannot be passive in any way. Just as Jesus did all he needed to do to make his message known, so must we be as proactive in our own discipleship. (Living Liturgy, p.212)

Scrip Cards– What are they and Who should buy them? Scrip Cards are sold at the back of church after Mass, and they are a great way to support our parish school. If you are going to shop and buy groceries, wash your car, or go out to eat, why not do it with a gift card you buy that sends money back to the school? Most of the grocery cards give 4% back to the parish, where some of the cards pay back quite a bit more. Autobahn Car Wash gives back 29%. So, even if you do not have children in the school, and you are looking at a way to help out, that will not cost you any additional money….just buy a few gift cards. These monies raised will take the burden off of our parish, who subsidizes the school. This is such an easy way for ALL parishioners to support our parish school.

September 18, 2016,: Ordinary Time-Stewardship and Generosity

Whether young or old, rich or poor, married or not, we are each called to live our lives as true disciples, through conscious stewardship of all our resources. Every gift we’ve been given, every tick of the second hand on the clock, every dollar we may earn– we can make as much-or little-of, depending on how attuned we really are to God’s will for us. If we serve God first, His unfathomable generosity will in-crease to all our efforts. (CCC2402-2418) archstl.org/dynamic
