10:30 AM Keynote Presentation Brookens Auditorium Everything You Learned in Library School is Wrong David Lankes, Syracuse University, School of Information Studies, Syracuse, New York. Professor and

Dean’s Scholar on New Librarianship Streaming at http://www.uis.ed/technology/live/ilead.html We all know that libraries are Good and Necessary Things and Libraries Collect, Organize and Provide

Access to Information. That’s what we were taught in library school right? Except of course, they don’t. Libraries don’t do anything except exert gravity and shield you from the rain. It is librarians and the people in the library that makes the world a better place. Collections are just tools, like buildings, and books and databases and 3D printers. This keynote will focus on how librarians are radical positive change agents that make communities better.

11:45 AM Break 12:00 PM Becoming an Agent of Change in Your Life and Library Brookens Auditorium Beck Tench In 2008, Beck Tench was hired as a change-agent for a science museum in Durham, NC. Her boss told

her on her first day that if she didn't fail, he'd be disappointed in her. Good thing he didn’t know that the only thing Beck feared more than failure was disappointing others! In sharing her story of fear, failure and change, Beck offers practical ways to make space for risk taking in your own life and library.

1:15 PM Buffet Lunch PAC Restaurant 2:30 PM Keynote Presentation Brookens Auditorium Inspired Outreach John Emerson, founder of backspace.com How do you engage the hearts and minds of your audience? Connect and empower with outreach that

makes people say “Aha!” and “Let’s do it!” 3:45 PM Break 4:00 PM Copyright: Balancing Creativity and the Law PAC H Alyce Scott This introduction to copyright law will provide information on avoiding infringement as well as

protecting your own original works. “Team Time with Beck” – Team: Fresh, Local and Organic Programming PAC C/D Beck Tench One-on-one teamwork with Beck to brainstorm your project and identify opportunities to collectively

and individually reach for goals that may seem daunting. Design Workshop with Team: Make It Count PAC E John Emerson Let's talk about your project, your audience and your outreach.

5:15 PM Stop Wasting People’s Time — Life Is Too Short to Build Something No One Wants PAC C/D Jeff Penka As we begin work on a project, it’s easy to fall in love with the solution being built and forget that we

aren’t likely the intended audience for the work. Any successful project, product, or program begins and ends with understanding the target audience, their problems and making sure the solution solves their problems in a “valuable” way. Through this highly interactive session, participants will use a framework to build a composite picture of their target audience(s), characterize their needs/problems, hone in on possible solutions, measure the relative impact of those solutions, and then rapidly get out in the world to validate and refine the picture. The concept from this workshop will feed into the “Everyone has a Plan” session.

Making It Work: Advice from ILEADers Who Have Been There Brookens Auditorium Amy Killebrew and Victoria Rakowski Learn about ILEAD from a group that's been there. Amy Killebrew and Vicki Rakowski of the 2013 ILEAD

Cohort will be discussing their group's project, Makeitatyourlibrary.org, and its evolution from an idea into a library resource that garners over 10,000 hits a month. Learn some strategies about the process, how to make it work for you and your team, and ideas for keeping your project going long after you've turned in dining hall card for the last time.

Everyone Has a Plan, Until They Get Punched in the Mouth - The Art of PAC C/D War by Mike Tyson Jeff Penka Change will happen, everything we think we know is a hypothesis, and iterative learning is our best path

forward? A startup can be defined as “a human institution designed to create a new product or service under conditions of extreme uncertainty”. By this definition, most projects and work can benefit from behaving a bit more like a startup. Building on the principles from the “Stop Wasting People’s Time” session, participants in this interactive session will learn to apply lean principles to any size project, maximizing learning and adaptability on a path to delivering valuable products and projects to the right audiences.

8:45 AM Self-Publish or Perish PAC F David Lankes In this session we'll explore self-publishing options from print books to audio and eBooks. Participants

will get a feel for the toolkit they can use to turn their libraries into publishers of the community and help our members share their expertise.

Semantic Web PAC G Andrew Bullen and Jeff Penka Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, has stated that the next expected evolution of

the WWW is to a “semantic web”. This web of data is here – what does a semantic web mean to libraries? What do you need to know about linked data? Why are these important concepts for every librarian to know? Get a practical perspective on how enabling technology like linked data and shared vocabularies such as bib frame and schema.org help libraries build on their rich tradition of data and project into the Web.

The Way You Hear It Is the Way You Sing It: User Research and Personas PAC H Brian Smith Provisional user personas are tools that can be used early in your planning, to help keep your team and

project focused on your prospective user base. Brian will review the role of user personas and the importance of researching your audience at the beginning of your project activities. You'll have the opportunity to create and share some practice personas, and will hopefully leave with a brainful of curiosity.

Grow Yourself. And Take Your Library With You! David Bendekovic, President of the B.A. David Company, an organizational and leadership development

firm specializing in helping librarians achieve success. Streaming at http://www.uis.edu/technology/live/ileadu.html Your ability to reach your goals has as much to do with how you choose to see the world as it does with

your level of education and intelligence. This keynote will give you the keys to thinking in a more powerful way about yourself, the people around you, and the work you want to get done. What You Do Makes A Difference. You Just Have To Figure Out What Kind Of Difference You Want To Make.

11:30 AM Cohort Five Presents: Video Fair Brookens Auditorium 2015 teams will present a short video about their project.

Team: Spectra Mentor: Amber Creger The team feels a growing need for libraries to better serve patrons with Autism Spectrum Disorder

(ASD). ASD is one of the fastest growing disabilities in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 1 in 68 children have been identified with ASD nationwide. Approximately 44,500 persons in Illinois are diagnosed with ASD. They wish to create a program that will help libraries deal with those affected by ASD and to improve their use of the library.

Team Members: Marcus Birch, Library Aide II Natalie DeJonghe, E-Book Trainer/Coordinator Meghan Harmon, Local History & Genealogy Reference Librarian Matthew Henninger, Library Technical Specialist Jamie Mott, Library Specialist

Team: Access Axis Mentor: Ellen Popit The team defines the digital divide as one that exists between those individuals who do not have access

to technology or do not know how to use it to those individuals who have access to technology in their homes. The documentation reads that those that have access to technology within their homes have a greater advantage in the real world over those who do not. The team believes that it is the jobs of librarians to allow access to the newest technology and the resources to learn technology. The team aims to take this issue head-on in an effort to develop a technology course framework that has a clear set of digital competencies that can be applied to any type of library. This curriculum and set of tools will be available for anyone to use as a building block for reaching full digital literacy in the communities we serve.

Team Members: Erin L. Bigger, Reference Librarian Aaron Carlin, Randall Oaks Branch Manager Ryan Lambert, District Media Specialist Jason Pinshower, Information Services Librarian and Technology Trainer

Team: Fresh, Local, and Organic Programming Mentor: Leora Siegel This team proposes to create a sustainable online resource to serve as a community showcase and

clearinghouse for intellectual, physical and human resources available to our professional community. They want to centralize programming content, display information on physical resources available for sharing and advertise individuals’ expertise to swap among local libraries. This could be done by a crowd-source sharing blog.

Team Members: Tabatha Anderson, Youth Services Librarian Arianne Carey, Programming Coordinator Alison Tseng, Youth Services Technology Librarian Natalie Williams, Head of Youth Services Deidre Winterhalter, Youth Services Librarian

Team: Make It Count Mentor: Tony Powers This team is made of college librarians who plan to create and prove to others the tools to fill the gap

between traditional data collection and new assessment outcomes. Using questions, similar to ACRL’s Assessment in Action, they will develop best practices to share with others. Best practices include instructions on running statistically sound queries, protections to secure patron privacy, working with Institutional Research Departments to access student data and presenting results to administration.

Team Members: Jessica Bastian, Digital Services Librarian Anne-Marie Eggleston, Director of Library Services Jennifer Sauzer, Access Service Manager Rachelle Stivers, Director of Library and Information Services Erin Zimmerman, Library Technical Assistant

Team: Makestravaganza Mentor: Amber Creger The group would like to bring the Maker movement to local communities across the city of Chicago.

They will build on the popularity of existing Chicago Public Library (CPL) maker programs. They hope to bring coding, making and other 21st century skills to increase digital literacy.

Team Members: Matthew Egan, Librarian I Stuart Griner, Librarian I Brent Lipinksi, Branch Manager Ashley Rayner, Librarian I Katherine Tigges, Teen Services Librarian

Team: Pop-Up Kits Mentor: David Seleb To meet the challenge of building staff knowledge, our team will be creating and uploading videos on

how to use the Pop-Up Kit equipment. The videos will be simple and will be committed to making the equipment easily accessible and usable. We will also highlight five individual examples of how libraries are using the Pop-Up Kits through our Community Representative Projects. Those videos and projects will be the seeds for a website/database that share ideas and resources associated with the Kit. Ultimately, the project goal is empowerment through technology. By providing the tools and knowledge to staff members through the Kits and video database, they give staff members the ability to enrich lives within their communities.

March 24, 2015 Dear ILEAD USA Participants: We are delighted to welcome you to ILEAD USA: Innovative Librarians Explore, Apply and Discover, the 21st Century Technology and Leadership Skills Institute. This initiative strives to provide librarians with innovative continuing education opportunities that will enhance your abilities and allow you to better serve your patrons. Nowhere is the need for continuing education more important than in the area of technology. Librarians need to constantly keep up to date with the latest technology, and ILEAD USA represents an exciting new approach to strengthen technology and leadership skills among librarians. Building on four extremely successful cohorts held in 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014 this year Illinois participants will be joined by nine participants from Delaware, Maine, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Ohio, Utah, and Wisconsin. Our State Library colleagues will be conducting this initiative in their respective states. We are confident that the coming nine months of shared team-based learning will be personally and professionally enjoyable and rewarding. We are enormously grateful to the Institute of Museum and Library Services for awarding us the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program Grant that allows us to offer ILEAD USA. Thanks also to the staff of the Illinois State Library who has worked so hard to develop an exciting agenda for you. Congratulations on being selected to take part, and enjoy ILEAD USA! Sincerely,

ILEAD USA Evaluation Plan 2015

The evaluation of ILEAD USA in 2015 will involve data collection through four different survey instruments administered at different times during the year. These are mostly the same instruments that have been used with previous ILEAD cohorts. Some, although not many, of the questions have changed based on what’s been learned from earlier ILEAD evaluations. By using surveys with mostly the same questions, the evaluation can compare the experience of the 2015 ILEAD USA group to the prior ILEAD cohorts, to see what, if anything, changes. The evaluations of ILEAD since its launch in 2010 have provided the Illinois State Library with useful information on which it has drawn to continue to fine-tune the program. March 2015: Participants and mentors complete a preliminary survey asking them demographic and job-related questions. Participants are also asked a handful of questions about their early project team activities. April-May 2015: Participants complete a survey on their team experience and evaluation of the content from the first in-person training program in March. Mentors complete a survey just on the evaluation of content from the March in-person program. August-September 2015: Participants complete a survey on further developments in their team experience and evaluation of the content from the second in-person training program in June. Mentors complete a survey just on the evaluation of content from the June in-person program. November 2015: Participants complete a final survey asking them to evaluate their ILEAD experience. February 2016: Evaluation report for ILEAD 2015 is submitted to Illinois State Library.
