Scripture Reflection Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment our clock radios click on in the morning, until the last moment of the day when the television is turned off or someone bids us “good-night,” our life is filled with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low. Some words lift our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to buy something. Some words are hurtful. Today the Church focuses our attention on hearing the word of God. Are God’s words just more of the same—part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day? The challenge today is to allow God’s word to inspire us in new ways so that our outlook and attitudes align themselves more closely with the heart and mind of Christ Jesus.

Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen.

St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us!

St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Welcome, SCS Principal Maria Mateu Ward! St. Catherine of Siena is excited to welcome our new principal, Ms. Maria Mateu Ward! Maria grew up in Old Metairie and is a 1986 SCS graduate. We are excited to have her back at St. Catherine! Maria has been working hard with our assistant principals to prepare for the opening of school in August! More

information about plans for reopening school will be communicated to parents in the coming days. To learn more about Ms. Ward, visit scsgators.org/principal. Welcome home, Maria! Black and Indian Mission Appeal: July 18-19 Next week, we will take up a second collection to help bishops and dioceses to build up the Church in African American, Native American, and Alaska Native communities. Many people benefit from the Black and Indian Mission Collection (BIMC), such as students in a small mission school in the deep south, the Catholic community served by a Native deacon in Alaska, and the Native American parish on the prairie. The BIMC helps get good teachers in schools that otherwise would struggle to remain open, helps dioceses form lay ministers and catechists to spread the Gospel in their communities, and encourages young African Americans and Native Americans to serve as priests, brothers, or sisters.

Knights of Columbus BBQ Chicken Dinner: July 19 The SCS KC Council 12686 will hold a BBQ Chicken Dinner in the Cafeteria on Sunday, July 19, from 10 am until 2 pm. An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Parish News Eucharistic Adoration Chapel Adorers: Thank You!

Thank you to all who have committed to spending an hour with Our Eucharistic Lord either as an adorer or as a prayer partner! The willingness of committed adorers and prayer partners makes it possible for the chapel to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some share a commitment with one or more family members or friends and take turns covering the hour. Additional committed adorers are welcome and needed at any hour, but especially the following days and times:

Adorers: Sunday—3 am; Saturday—2 am and 3 am. Prayer Partners: Sunday—4 pm; Tuesday—1 pm; Wednesday—2 pm; Thursday—9 pm; Friday— 8 pm and 9 pm; and Saturday—3 pm and 7 pm. If you are willing and able to take an hour in the adoration chapel, please contact Mary Jeandron, [email protected] or 858-4464. Mass Attendance during Phase 2 Our pre-COVID19 Mass and Confession Schedule in Church have resumed. Phase 2 permits 50% occupancy in Churches, which allows St. Catherine of Siena to have 500 people at each Mass. If the number of people in Church exceeds 500, the ushers will ask you to come to another, later Mass. If we have more than 500 people for the 9 am Mass, however, we will offer overflow seating in the Melancon Center. We will livestream the 9 am Mass in the Melancon Center and bring Holy Communion to the Melancon Center at the appropriate time. To maximize the number of people in the Church while also maintaining social distancing, we ask that larger families sit in the middle two sections and that smaller families, couples, and individuals sit in the two smaller sections on either side of the larger section. We also added a number of pews along the brick walls and in the Narthex. If anyone is concerned with the increased number of participants at Mass, we would encourage you to attend one of our daily Masses, which usually have 125-150 participants. The people of the Archdiocese are still dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. Anyone who is vulnerable or not feeling well should not celebrate Mass in church with other people. SCS Society of St. Vincent de Paul has Transitioned to St. Catherine of Siena Helping Hands Ministry The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international organization of lay Catholics that ministers to the poor. They serve parishes throughout the world, but are organized to be independent of the parish. The SVdP conference here at St. Catherine has decided to disband and become a ministry of the parish. This new group will be called the St. Catherine of Siena Helping Hands Ministry. Our services will be the same as before: providing food and financial help to needy families, and handling Thanksgiving baskets and the Christmas Angel Tree. Please contact us at 267-9507 if you are interested in being part of Helping Hands. Church Office Summer Hours The church office closes at 2 pm on Fridays during June and July. Office hours are 8:30 am-4:30 pm, Monday-Thursday; and 8:30 am-2 pm on Friday.

Wearing a Mask Required at all Masses since July 1 Since July 1, by order of the Jefferson Parish President, masks must be worn inside all businesses in Jefferson Parish, including churches. Archbishop Aymond sent an email asking all Catholic churches in Jefferson Parish to comply with this order. Please bring a mask and wear it at Mass and when visiting the adoration chapel. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

General Guidelines for SCS Mass Attendance • Wearing a mask is mandatory at all Masses and in the adoration

chapel. • Every other pew in the Church is roped off. • Every household should sit six feet away from the other

household. • Be mindful of social distancing, and maintain six feet of

distance from others at all times. • The collection baskets will not be passed throughout the

Church. Two baskets will be placed at the foot of the sanctuary for anyone who wants to make an offering before Mass or during the offertory of Mass.

    • The sign of peace may be expressed by means of a smile and/or a nod of the head. No physical sign of peace will be exchanged.

    • When Mass is over, please do not gather in groups in the Narthex and continue to maintain social distancing.

Guidelines for Receiving Holy Communion • Please bring hand sanitizer to use before receiving

Communion. • During Communion, please maintain social distancing in the

line by spacing out six feet from the person in front of you. • Communion will be distributed by means of the sacred Host

only. There will be no distribution from the chalice. • Out of consideration and concern for others, we ask everyone

to receive Communion in the hand rather than on the tongue. • When approaching the priest/minister for Communion, place

your hand flat atop your other hand. The minister will place the Host on your hand and then let go of the Host to avoid any contact with your hand.

Two St. Catherine of Siena Teachers Retire

Sue Schott and Peggy Fernandez paused for a picture with the statue of Our Lady that graces the sanctuary during May. The veteran teachers concluded their service to St. Catherine of Siena School and were honored during the closing school Mass on May 20, which was livestreamed on the St. Catherine of Siena YouTube channel.

Encouraging Scriptures “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” — Matthew 11:28-30 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not. In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths.” — Proverbs 3:5-6 “We know that all things work for good for those who love God.” — Romans 8:29 “Let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of our faith.” — Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat [or drink], or about your body, what you wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? But seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.” — Matthew 6:25, 27, 33-34 “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed to us.” — Romans 8:18 “No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.” — 1 Corinthians 10:13

Christine Corrigan Alpha Testimony I was lucky enough to be raised in a very religious family. My father is a Deacon here at St. Catherine and my mother a devout Catholic. Faith was always a part of my life. I never questioned if I believed in God or why I believed in God, it was just what we did. I feel like Alpha strengthened the faith I already had. It helped me realize why I believe and how important

faith is to a family. I was struggling in how to put God first in my life. As a working mother I felt pulled in so many ways but something kept telling me to just put God first and the rest will fall into place. One of the first steps I took to strengthen my faith was Alpha. The hardest part is committing, the rest is easy! We all think we have too much going on to commit to something else, but trust me you will be thankful you did this. It was a wonderful experience for my husband and I, our children also enjoyed it! We were blessed to be at a table with good friends and we enjoyed the sense of community Alpha gave us.

St. Catherine of Siena Men of St. Joseph A strong emphasis of the Archdiocese of New Orleans Men’s Conference in March was the importance of small groups where men pray together and encourage one another to be the spiritual leaders of their families. The St. Catherine of Siena chapter of the Men of St. Joseph, an organization dedicated to invigorating the spiritual lives of Catholic men and, by their positive influence, the spiritual lives of their families, friends, and coworkers, continues to meet on Wednesday mornings, 6:30-7:30 am. Participants must make their own coffee at this time, since the Men of St. Joseph currently are meeting by means of Zoom conferencing, but the commute is easier! Contact Don Engler, 908-2392 or [email protected], for the meeting link. Parish-Wide Emails At this time, Fr. Tim is sending parish-wide emails when there is particularly timely information to convey to parishioners. Once the COVID-19 pandemic is over, an email with parish highlights will be sent once a month. Please call the church office if you are not currently subscribed and would like to begin receiving the emails. Online giving gives you complete control, allowing you to designate your contribution as one-time or recurring, with the convenience of making changes at any time. Also available by means of online giving is the option to contribute to the Field of Dreams capital campaign. Please contact Fr. Andrew, [email protected] or 835-9343, to discontinue electronic giving and for any help needed with initiating online giving.

Prayer for Protection During Hurricane Season Lord Jesus Christ, our God in the flesh! As You saved Your apostles from perishing in a storm by calming wind and wave on Your command, so now keep us safe and sound during hurricane season. Grant us favorable and benign weather. Protect us from the unpredictable elements of nature. Spare us from storm, flood, fire, illness, injury, disaster, and sudden death. Preserve us from all evil and harm, for we, though sinful, are nonetheless the work of Your hands—and You, together with Your Father who has no beginning and Your holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, are our God, in whom we live, move, and have our being, now and ever, and for ages and ages. Amen.
