REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 SEPTEMBER 1, 2019

STEWARDSHIP . . .Thank you for supporting your parish, St. Catherine of Alexandria!

Brothers and Sisters,

This Labor Day weekend we can reflect on and give thanks for “the work of human hands”, to borrow a phrase from the liturgy. In fact, the word liturgy comes from the two words that mean “the work of the people”. We gather around the table of the Lord today to share a meal. Everyone is invited! Regardless of race, gender, culture, background, class, iden ty, income or any other unnecessary source of division. In the gospel we listen to Jesus tell a parable about invita ons to a banquet. As we listen, let us consider our hospitality toward others.

Today’s readings teach us the virtues of simplicity, humility and meekness. Daily in our lives we see peo-ple basking in the limelight of prominence and fame, unmindful of the needs and cries of others. But in today’s parable Jesus teaches a different value system, one where “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” What is humility? It is an honest, truthful es ma on of ourselves. Whatever we are or have, we owe to God. We did not bring ourselves into being, God created us.

Humility, the virtue recommended to all of us in today’s first reading is the one virtue our divine Lord told us to copy from him: “Learn from me for I am meek and humble of heart.” The opposite of humility is pride. The Bri sh writer and lay theologian, C.S. Lewis in his work Mere Chris anity, called pride “the great sin”. As pride increases, arrogance and some mes abusive behaviors ensue, and people suffer. Jesus invites us to overcome the tendency for self-importance by focusing on giving importance to oth-ers. Humility is the virtue pleasing before the Lord. Everything we are and have is a loan from God, and therefore we should not boast of it, or grow proud because of it.

Today Jesus tells the people (and us) a parable in order to get through to the Pharisees (and us) about the need for true humility. He has no ced how the Pharisees had a tendency to take the places of honor and sees this as symptoma c of their pride-their belief that they are more important than everyone else. The name “Pharisee” means “separated one” and they saw themselves as an elite group. This parable is painful to hear because it speaks of the embarrassment that comes when we find our pride being ques oned. How uncomfortable it would be to find ourselves being escorted from first class to economy, from the front of the plane to the cheap seats.

We have all heard the saying that “pride goeth before the fall”. Perhaps we have allowed ourselves a bit of a smile when we have seen this truth played out in the lives of others. Pride can be very subtle. Some mes we are not aware of the effect it is having in our lives. When we focus on the faults of others and not our own, pride may be at the root. When we are more interested in how other people perceive us than we are about how God views us, that could be pride. When we are desperate for a en on and respect and adula on of others, that surely is pride.

True humility and meekness make us more hospitable. Taking the spotlight off ourselves directs that light on the value of others, the poor, the neglected, the vulnerable, the marginalized, the outcasts. We want to tell them, “You are valued, you are important, you are treasured.”

MINISTRY OF SOCIAL CONCERNSMINISTRY OF SOCIAL CONCERNSMINISTRY OF SOCIAL CONCERNS Pope Francis invites Catholics… Reaffirm your Stewardship of the Earth Pope Francis has called the five weeks from September 1 through October 4, 2019 ‘the Season of Creation’ and asks all Catholics to reflect upon his 2015 letter Laudato Si’ (On the Care for God’s Creation) and “reaffirm their personal vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which he has entrusted to our care, and to pardon the sins committed against the world in which we live.”

Here are three (feel free to do more!) suggestions: 1. On our ‘throwaway culture’ - Try and identify ways in which you can choose reusables, rather than disposables, such as coffee mugs, reusable bags, or cloth napkins and commit to making one change during the month. 2. As a community - Educate yourself and others on the connections between all creatures under God our Creator. Visit the Catholic Climate Covenant website for additional ideas. 3. Meal prayer - Before and after meals, say a short prayer of thanksgiving for the life-giving food that sustains and nourishes us. Give thanks for the human hands that helped bring this food to our table. For additional ideas, go to www.usccb.org or www.cacatholic.org websites or contact the Ministry of Social Concerns c/o Deacon John at the parish Ministry Center, Extension 11.

Our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. Pope Francis Laudato Si’ #1
