LECTIONARY REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 SEPTEMBER 5, 2010

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

ALL IN THE FAMILY

The term “family” gets used quite often today to describe a series of close bonds that are (or ought to be) pre-sent among various groups. Parishes, schools, scout troops, work groups, many different kinds of organiza-tions commonly refer to themselves as “family” members with each other. How shocking it will be for us to-day, in our nuclear families or parish families, to learn from the lips of Jesus himself that it is in the renounc-ing of family relationships and the rending of family ties, even the despising of our own God-given life, that we will come to know and understand what it means to be a disciple, a follower of Jesus Christ. Is all of this to be taken literally? Yes and no. The Gospel today is telling us that in order to progress as a disciple, to fol-low Christ more closely, it is Christ and his gospel that alone can be the heart and center of our lives. Will most of us be called upon literally to leave our family members? Most likely not. But if we are disciples, we must be ready to do so.

A FAMILY GUIDED BY PERFECT WISDOM

The first reading from Wisdom states, in its own way, this very same principle. All that we know of this life, all that we hold dearest, that we love and cherish most, all of this is still not of the unsearchable and unknow-able riches of divine wisdom. Jesus’ extreme description of what we must reject establishes the same sort of chasm between God’s ways and our ways as the author of the Wisdom passage does. But both teachers also instruct us that God can and God does, through the spirit of grace from on high, come to us and reveal to us the ways of heaven. We do not or cannot search them out for ourselves in our earthly things or human rela-tionships. But we can, with God’s help, set aside our own limited natures and come closer in the loving bond God has for us and is prepared to spread among us. St. Vincent de Paul

An SVdP team recently visited a family on the East Side that calls our helpline each month for food assistance. The young boy was turn-ing five and would be starting school the next week. We took them a couple bags of food and surprised them with a backpack filled with a few school sup-plies. Their new neighbor was visiting when we ar-rived. They had just moved in a few days before and had a daughter who was turning six years old that day. We had an extra backpack in the car that we did not use on a previous visit. We gave the birthday girl a backpack with supplies for school and she was so excited she gave each of us a great big hug. She put the backpack on and modeled it for us.

Thank you for the opportunity you give us to put smiles on the faces of the young students we encoun-ter.

At the Crossroads

Yes to School and Catholic Education, with St. Catherine

of Alexandria!

One of the questions I asked myself when I started school at age 6 was: what sort of study habits should I develop to withstand the rigors of learning? I dabbled in mathematics’ four basic operations by imagining numbers in the air. I memorized the multiplication table. My father used to tell us that using our fingers to count was a sign of mental weak-ness. My mother taught me to read and write. And I read a lot, everything that my eyes could set on. My whole family had quiet after an hour of evening meal, for study period. Our dining table became a huge study table. The first 30 minutes I devoted to homework; the next 30 minutes was to review the past lessons; and the third 30 minutes was to read ahead, to prepare for future lessons, writing down questions and things I did not understand for my teacher to answer and explain. After that, we prayed and slept…

In high school, I explored everything education could offer, to develop my whole person. Besides academic works that included Latin and Spanish, I developed hobbies: painting and music, stamp- and coin-collections, physics and elec-tronics. I played center-forward for our undefeated midget basketball team. I played European soccer, but the Don Bosco guys were always better than us. I wrote poems, es-says and short stories in English, Latin and Spanish. I first got published in a national youth magazine at second year high. Chess was a favorite. I read Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, Omar Khayyam, Poe, Shakespeare, Whit-man. Nothing I could not do and learn in high school!

I almost got expelled from the university in my college days. Majoring in Pre-Divinity with Philosophy as minor, at age 17, I challenged the Jesuit-style of education and its rele-vance in our struggle for freedom and democracy under Mar-tial Law of the Marcos dictatorship. Then I learned that edu-cation fundamentally means “a cultural action for freedom”, from the Latin: “educere = to lead away from”- from igno-rance, from fear, from anything that stifles the human spirit and degrades creation. I discovered that, indeed, genuine education is training for liberation. Catholic education in this sense, is to free ourselves from selfishness so that we are free to serve one another; to harness everything that we have, to develop the world through the sciences so that these could be freed from the stranglehold of selfish corporate interests, attain our glorious identity as communities of scholars, ex-plore and discover the laws of nature and develop the goods of the universe as God’s gifts to all. In other words, Catholic education is supposed to lead us all, and all of creation, freely to Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth and the Life.

We are fortunate to have St. Catherine of Alexandria as our patron. She is the Patron Saint of students, teachers, scholars, artisans, lawyers, judges, and professionals! Know her and go to her, ask for her help, be devoted to her! – Fr. Ben

What a Great Start to a New Year!

Last Monday, our student body and many parents gathered around the school flag pole. Music played as the stu-dents took their places. Prayer was then led by the new Student Council. Teachers were introduced and I gave a brief welcome statement which began and ended with the cheer, “God is Good!” which was echoed by the stu-dents, “All the Time!”. Students then filed into their new classrooms while parents enjoyed coffee, doughnuts, and a joyful half hour of fellowship. It was a great start to what we hope will be the best year we’ve ever had.

Sr. Joan Holland was one of the first to greet me that morning. Sr. Joan has been our Campus Minister for several years and originally came to our school in the early 1960’s with the Sisters of St. Francis of Clinton, Iowa. She was very busy that morning greeting children who hurried over to give her a hug – and make her smile. She told me once a while back while recovering from an illness that it was one of those hugs that re-confirmed her call to serve here. “This is my life”, she said. Her statement summed up what we all believe in the back of our minds who work at St. Catherine of Alexandria school: this is our ministry, our life’s calling, to serve God by serving His children. Sr. Joan simply put it into words. She spent the rest of the early morning confirming and reconfirming that as she went from child to child, listening to their summer adventures, examining new glasses and braces, and receiving hugs.

At the end of the day as the last of the children were being picked up, one of the parents asked me how my day was. We had enrolled 337 students (more this year than last), we had a warm, but mild day, and a very successful beginning. But reflecting on Sr. Joan’s comment, I couldn’t help but reply, “Glorious”. What a joy it is to begin a new school year.

Thank you for your support. We need our parish to pray for our school’s success (and our families’ spiritual growth). We are all blessed in the process.

Volunteers…

Children’s Homily is seeking assistance!

We are currently searching for volunteers during the 8:30 a.m. or 10:15 a.m. Masses. Schedule is made on a rotating basis. Therefore, it may only require 1 or 2 Sundays per month. Training will be provided. This is a great opportu-nity to teach the children of our parish and serve the Lord at the same time – only taking 1 hour out of your Sunday.

Children’s Pre-school is in immediate need of volunteers!

The programs take place during the 8:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Masses in the Parish Hall. You would be working with children between the ages of 3 years old to 5 years old and using a formal catechesis program. Minimal lesson planning is involved.

If you have any questions or want more information, please contact Rachel Mahoney, Children’s Liturgy/Pre-school Coordinator at 781.855 ext. 26.

We need YOU to help these children get prepared for receiving their Sacraments, learn about our Roman Catholic Traditions, live out the Gospel, and journey in our faith together.

The rewards are many; your faith will deepen as you prepare your lessons and the joy that will fill your heart as you watch these little ones grow into pre-teens and growing stronger in their faith. The Faith Forma-tion Staff and parish are in need of your help. Our par-ish continues to grow and we do not want to turn any child away who is looking to grow in their faith. Please pray to see if this is the ministry of which our Lord is calling you to be part. If you are interested or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call our office.

**Please note that any adult (ages 18+) working with children on a regular basis as a volunteer will need to follow certain guidelines and training before being al-lowed to help. Please don’t let this turn you away; it is for the safety of all involved.**
