8 St. Brigid Church 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time 10-16-2011 From The Pastor’s Desk

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time-A WORD OF GOD: The state of the world is rarely a matter for peace of mind. The past ten months alone have seen a tidal wave, bombings in London, hurricanes and an earthquake. There is an uncertainty about our times, a sense of grappling with new issues. We wonder where it will all end, and we feel uneasy. At times like this it is important to remember that God is our Creator. Our Creator, not just in the sense of calling everything into life; but in the sense of a parent whose children are constantly shaped and nurtured in the divine love. God is a Creator as an ongoing presence among us, working with human frailties, inspiring, challenging, renewing and above all loving us. This does not guarantee that our world will be free from disaster brought on by human arrogance, nor does it mean that hatred will always be thwarted. But God's providence never deserts us, and the shaping presence of the divine love is always with us and within us. In the gospel Jesus tells the disciples to give to the state what belongs to the state, and to God what belongs to God (Matt. 22.15-21). It is wonderfully simple and clear and at the same time enigmatic. What does belong to God? Where are the limits of the state? Jesus both points the way to us, and expects us to take responsibility for our decisions. The providence of God that we recall in the first reading is sometimes made known through the state, and its ability to care for and protect its citizens. At the same time, the state cannot be God. We must play our part as citizens, but we must be watchful and discerning. Empires rise and fall, but another city grows quietly, and it is the City of God. This was what grew in Salonika, where Paul saluted the Christians who were showing faith in action, work for love and perseverance through hope, (1 Th. 1.1-5), our second reading). May the same be said of us.

PARISH COUNCIL DISCERNMENT: Members of the Parish Council, the parish staff, and the priests, deacons, and religious work together to further the mission of Jesus in the parish and surrounding community. They pool their individual gifts, knowledge, experience, talents, and abilities to address the needs of the parish to fix what needs to be fixed, if it can be fixed, to undertake parish projects and programs, to do what needs to be done, in the right way and for the right reasons. They speak with, and listen to, what the people of the parish have to say; and they br ing that information to the parish council meetings to discuss it and decide what can be done about i t. No parish council is perfect; no parish council can do everything. But if our hearts are in the right place, if we keep our focus on Jesus and what He wants, He will bless us and enable us to accomplish some good things. The Raffle Tickets – that Fr. Tom mentioned to you awhile back, are being distributed after all the Masses this weekend. The raffle tickets are $10.00for a book of 12 tickets. Each family in the parish is asked to be responsible for at least 3 books. 1st prize is $15,000; 2nd prize is $2,000; and there are 6 $500 prizes. The drawing will take place on Sunday, December 13, 2011, 4:00 pm, at Nativity Church. The prizes are already assured; and St. Brigid gets to keep the money from all the tickets we sell. This is a win-win situation for the parish. St. Brigid cannot lose. And we could use the money. It will help us finish the purchase of the new church van we need so much; and the money will also help us to replace the church doors that lead out to the parking lot. If we sell all our tickets, we can generate a profit of $10,000. So, let’s get our there and sell as many tickets as we can!

Fr. Roger Caesar
