Today, the students in our Senior Learning Community (SLC) participated in the Reading Program with some of

the volunteers from the Balwyn North Rotary Club. All students in the SLC have an opportunity to read one on

one with a volunteer and discuss some key points about their novel. This program began last year and will occur

each Tuesday of this year. This is a great initiative in building stronger Parish and community partnerships and I

would like to thank the volunteers for their time and contribution towards our students’ learning.

During our Maths block today all students across our school participated in a chess lesson organised by

Northern Star Chess. Northern Star Chess conduct our chess club on Wednesdays and Sundays and facilitate the

chess tournaments that we attend and host. The aim of this chess program during maths is to help improve

mathematical skills such as pattern recognition and problem solving skills. For these sessions students are

allocated into groups based on their individual skills and knowledge of chess and these sessions will occur each

Tuesday during Term 1.

Also today, our Junior Learning Communities (JLC M & JLC WM) participated in their first Chinese lesson for the

year. Our Chinese lessons occur each week by linking directly with Shanghai and is followed up with a weekly

lesson with their classroom teacher. This program is currently offered to our Junior students including our Prep

students and is in addition to the Italian lessons conducted by Signora Michieli where Science content is taught.

Warm regards

What has been happening in JLC M In our Inquiry unit we have been learning about social skills and how these skills can help when working with others.

These skills are: 1. Look at the person who is talking to you 2. Ask questions to help you understand 3. Listen without interrupting 4. Share ideas and resources 5. Listen with your body 6. Speak clearly and calmly

We have also been learning about Habits of Mind

Some of these are: Persisting - This means to not give up when you’re stuck on something

Thinking Flexibly - This means to understand that there is more than one way to solve a problem.

Taking responsible risks - This means to try new things and don’t worry about making mistakes

We have also been learning about multiple intelligences. This is about how we prefer to learn.

We have also been learning about how unique we all are. Unique means there is only one of something. Every person in the world is unique even identical twins.

We looked at our fingerprints because they are unique. Noone has the same fingerprints.

We are looking forward to learning more about how we can help ourselves to be the best that we can be.
