By doing so David saved the Israelites from a terrible war with the Philistines. The victory won favor from the people of David, but hatred from King Soul. Soul convinced himself that David was his enemy and would try to usurp the throne. He tried without success to kill David. In today’s first reading the tables are turned. David has the opportunity to king the King, but out of respect for him as the Lord’s anointed he refuses to do so. He actually forgives the King for his attacks upon him. Where today do we find an example like that of David? Surely not among politicians who assassinate each other with words and TV adds during every political campaign. We have an excellent model, however, in the person of Pope John Paul II. After he had recovered from the blatant attack upon his life when he was shot in St. Peter’s Square, one of the first things he did was to visit his as- sailant in prison and offer him forgiveness and reconciliation. This was one of the extraordinary examples of forgiveness. But we look even beyond this exemplary man to the person of Jesus. Jesus preached compassion, forgiveness and reconciliation as we learn in today’s Gospel; his teaching is very much the opposite of what we hear and see in our society. Jesus also practiced what he preached. Jesus looked out upon those who crucified him and prayed , ‘’Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing.’’ We are called to follow the teachings and the example of Jesus in what affects us personally. You do not have to live long to have someone hurt you deeply, either by saying terrible things behind your back or by actually doing something which harms you seriously. These hurts we must foster. We must banish them by offering forgiveness and reconciliation to any one who has harmed us. In every Mass we hear the ringing words of Christ: ‘’This is the cup of my blood...It will be shed for you and for many so that sins may be forgiven.’’ Reconcil- ing Christ in Holy Communion, partaking of his blood shed for the sake of forgiveness, gives us the strength we need to be a people of forgiveness and reconciliation so that we can bring peace wherever there is hatred. Needs—-Wants We still could use a donor to purchase 8 books for a Lenten bible study for Regis HS girls, "I AM" by Chris Stefanick for $160.00. Any donation amount would be appreciated and can be brought to the

ICC office. Please make sure the check is marked for the specific item you would like purchased and is marked for YOUTH MIN-ISTRY. The Youth Minister will be speaking at the Masses this month regarding the March retreat coming up. The vital and powerful retreat costs the parishes $105.00 per youth but they are charged only $50 in order to ensure that everyone can afford to go. Carolyn will be requesting additional financial support in order to ensure that this retreat is financially responsible and yet a life changers for the hearts of our young people. Thank you for the generous donation from the Kroon family for the March retreat. Any support would be greatly appreciated!
