August 23, 2020 2 SAINT BERNARD
Jesus was so many things to so many people: a son, a friend, a teacher, a rabbi, and a prophet. He was these things and more; he was fully divine and fully human. He is the Son of God who came to save humanity by becoming like us and offering himself to the Father. Throughout his ministry on earth, Jesus gradually revealed these truths about himself to others. In today’s Gospel, we hear his curiosity over what people thought of him. We all know how that feels. We wonder if someone likes us, is mad at us, or wants to spend time with us. We live our lives, sometimes, in a cloud of worry when it comes to others’ impressions of us. Just like us, Jesus is happy to hear that his friends see him for who he truly is—the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus is so pleased with Simon Peter’s answer that he rewards him with a special duty. Simon’s name will be changed to Peter (which is derived from the Greek word for “rock”, petra). Jesus tells Peter than he is a rock and that our Church will be built on that rock. We believe that this passage is what establishes the hierarchy of our Church, with the pope as the temporal (or worldly) leader of the Catholic Church. We believe that Peter was the first pope. He helped to establish the faith of our Catholic Church for generations to come. The trajectory of Peter’s life is dramatically changed by his encounters with Jesus and his recognition that Jesus is the Christ. Instead of living his life as a fisherman, he becomes a great figure in the early Church and shares the Good News with all he meets. All our lives changed by our encounter with Jesus. We meet him in the sacraments and the liturgy, in other people, in creation. Jesus meets us where we are and draws us closer to him.

Celebration of Mass
♦ Masks must be worn in Church.
♦ Please maintain social distancing. (6 feet)
♦ Purell is available in the vestibule of Church.
♦ Mass is limited to 25% capacity (about 120-140 people).
♦ Families from the same household may sit next to each other.
♦ Offertory baskets will be placed in the sanctuary on either side of the altar and in the back of church by the double doors. You may put all your first and second collection envelopes and offerings in any of the baskets.
♦ There is not to be any gathering in the vestibule before or after Mass.
♦ Please feel free to ask if you have any questions or concerns.
♦ The Church will be sanitized twice a week, on Friday and Monday, before and after weekend Masses.
Receiving Communion
♦ The communicant should come before the minister of Communion with their mask on for the dialogue (“The Body of Christ, Amen”) and then, moving to the side, lower the mask and consume the Eucharist and replace their mask.
♦ The Precious Blood WILL NOT be distributed.
♦ Parishioners will come for Communion observing at least 6 feet of distance between them as they ap-proach. The floor has markings on it.
♦ IT IS VERY STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT PARISHIONERS RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN THE HAND. This is for the safety of the parishioner receiving Holy Communion and the minister of Holy Communion. If a parishioner wishes to receive on the tongue they should come forward at the end of the Communion line so they are the last ones receiving so that the Communion ministers can disinfect their hands if need be after each person receives.
