2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME
-PRINCIPALS’ MESSAGE-
With the arrival of March, we look forward to even warmer weather and longer spring days. The March Break will soon be upon us, and we will have the
opportunity to renew ourselves for the final term. We encourage you to continue to celebrate your
child’s successes, and continue to support them on their academic journey.
How timely that the virtue of this month is Forgiveness! This is not only because we are in the season of
Lent, but also because it is an important cornerstone of our faith and one that Jesus modeled for us in
His life and death. Forgiveness starts with being able to say that you are sorry and continues with the
ability to let things go. Holding onto grudges can never lead to peaceful resolutions, our own inner peace
and peace with what the Lord asks of us.
We are reminded that forgiveness is a gift to
ourselves and to others. It is a gift from God that
even He gives freely, as long as we repent. We
are also reminded that it is very important to let
go of the burden of resentment when we forgive
another person—that is the gift to our children
when we teach and model sincere forgiveness to
them. Teaching our children to follow Christ’s
teachings is the most important thing we can
teach them, and our actions will speak louder than our words.
We embark upon the Liturgical Season of Lent with the distribution of ashes. On March 6th, Ash
Wednesday, we begin the Lenten season with a school wide Para-Liturgy where all students will receive
ashes. Father Boniface and Father Pius will distribute ashes and speak to the students about the
importance of Lent. We were all reminded to turn away from sin and to live God by being faithful to the
Gospel.
Of course, the Mid-Winter Break is scheduled for the week of March 11th to the 15th. We hope that
everyone in our school community is able to enjoy some quality family time. If you are staying in the city
consider all that the city has to offer you. You can visit the following link for planning and ideas: https://www.todocanada.ca/march-break-activities-toronto/
Most importantly, we look forward to having all of our students back to school rested and refreshed for
the final term stretch.
On behalf of the staff of St. Bernard Catholic School, Our Trustee, Mr. D. DiGiorgio, our Superintendent,
Geoff Grant and Father Boniface, best wishes to all the families of our school for a safe and enjoyable
March Break.
May God bless our St. Bernard Family!!

FORGIVENESS
This month’s quote: To Err is
Human. To Forgive is
Divine
1. Let your actions be guided
by the idea that Jesus said,
“Let he who is without sin,
cast the first stone.”
• It’s easy to criticize others but
no one is perfect
• If God doesn’t judge us, how
can WE judge others
2. The first step to forgiveness
is to take responsibility for
your actions.
• We usually know when we’ve
done something wrong
• Saying sorry can be tough but
if you’re wrong, it’s the right
thing to do
3. If you want to be forgiven,
you need to make sure you
forgive other people
• We know that God will always
forgive us when we do
something wrong
• If someone is really trying to
make things better, we should
try and
move on from our anger and
forgive them the way God
forgives us
4. Live your life in a way that makes others know you
are a follower of Christ
• Jesus forgave others even when he was on the cross.

Prayer on the Lenten Journey
We travel through deserts and despair
As we focus on
How Christ was crucified,
And is crucified
In the world today.
We agree to make
This journey, this pilgrimage,
And to leave life as usual,
Business as usual,
To pay attention,
To be present
To pain and suffering.
The journey to the Light of Easter
Can only go this way.
We choose to learn
This hard truth,
To accept the ashes,
To witness the darkness,
To walk the way of the Cross
As it happens in our world.
Let us journey together,
Open to the world
So we may be renewed
And help bring to all
The renewal
Of Resurrection.

ANAPHYLAXIS IS THE MOST SEVERE ALLERGIC
REACTION AND IS POTENTIALLY LIFE
THREATENING
At St. Bernard Catholic School several students have
serious and/or life-threatening allergies to certain
foods. Foods that can trigger an anaphylactic
reaction by consumption and contact are: traces of
peanuts and other nuts, fish and shellfish, sesame
seeds, eggs, kiwis and seed and nut oils. ***DO NOT
send food products with these ingredients as trace
amounts and cross contamination can cause serious
physical and emotional reactions and even death. We
2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME
ask that everyone practice extra care in checking all
food items before they come to school. This is an
adult responsibility. Contamination from allergens
can easily spread to desktops, all about the school
(doorknobs, materials, equipment, etc.,) and the
buses. Speaking to your children about food allergies
will help to educate your children about cross
contamination. Please DO NOT bring in any type of
food items for birthdays or at any time. We want
these special days to be fun for all children so we
invite you to consider alternate choices for sharing.
We also do not want anyone to feel obligated to send
any items to your child’s classmates. For those that
wish to, some suggestions include: a book donation to
the class on behalf of the child celebrating their
birthday, craft supplies for the class to share, a
donation to a charity that the school supports in your
child’s name, a pencil, stickers, or crayons. In
addition to this, we would like for you to reinforce
our message of not sharing food items. Although we
promote sharing, for example, of books, toys, ideas,
materials, etc., the sharing of any food item is
absolutely not permitted. Frequent hand washing is
also an important step in preventing cross
contamination.
While we cannot guarantee an allergen free
environment, together, we can do our best for the
safety of all children at St. Bernard. We count on the
care of staff, parents, and students, in establishing a
common understanding of the severity of anaphylaxis.
Full community co-operation will help us prevent
incidences of medical emergencies due to
anaphylactic reactions.
***************************************************
PLEASE HAVE ALL ITEMS
TAKEN CARE OF PRIOR TO
START OF SCHOOL:
We are a school of almost 750 people in the
building, it is very important that we all work
efficiently in our homes and our school.
Unnecessary disruptions throughout the day disrupt
student and staff work. Lunches,
homework, dress code, projects, last
minute forms and funds, and any other
items should be tended to prior to the
beginning of the school day. Your co-
operation in this matter will support
us in maximizing our order and
productivity at the school.
2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME
HOMEWORK AND
COMMUNICATION Every student should be receiving regular
homework and every class has a means of
communicating this important aspect of
school to parents—whether it be via agenda,
communication pouches or folders or
electronically through apps such as Remind
101, Twitter or Instagram. This information
has or will be communicated to you. If you
are unsure, please contact your classroom
teacher immediately.
Be sure to support homework expectations.
Homework in grade school reinforces and
extends classroom learning and helps kids
practice important study skills. It also helps
them develop a sense of responsibility and a
work ethic that will benefit them beyond the
classroom. In addition to making sure your
child knows that you see homework as a
priority, you can help by creating an
effective study environment. Any well-lit,
comfortable, and quiet workspace with the
necessary supplies will do. Avoiding
distractions (like a TV in the background or
computer games in the same space) and
setting up a start and end time can also help.
While your child does homework, be
available to interpret assignment
instructions, offer guidance, answer
questions, and review the completed work.
But resist the urge to provide the correct
answers or complete the assignments
yourself. Learning from mistakes is part of
the process and you don't want to take this
away from your child.
(www.kidshealth.org). We thank you for
your partnership in student success!
2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME
Staff Communications &
Appointments
Every effort will be made by your child’s teacher to keep you informed of his/her progress and involvement in class. If you wish to speak with a teacher, a note sent with your child requesting a call is usually sufficient.
If, however, you wish to contact a teacher by telephone, please telephone the office. If the teacher is not available at the time of your call, you are asked to leave a message with your name and the name of your child should last names be different, and the phone numbers of where you can be reached. No adult outside of school staff should
arrive unannounced during school hours to any space in the school other than
the front office. Not only is it disruptive to classes, but it does not provide the
opportunity for good communication and creates a safety alert to staff. To report firstly to the front office is also a Safe Schools Policy: all visits to the school must begin at the front office where
visitors must wait for instructions. If you have a scheduled appointment with the
teacher and/or Principal and cannot make the appointment, please call the school as soon as possible and we will
reschedule. At times, full resource teams prepare for meetings and last
minute cancellations result in delays in gathering School Support Teams a
second time. Be sure to honour all school appointments.

students.
Students who require an Epi-Pen
must have 2 Epi-Pens at school:
one to be kept in the office and
one to be kept with the student at
all times. Two Epi-Pens are
necessary for any student to
attend a regular excursion. Three
Epi-Pens are necessary for
overnight excursions. Students
that require “puffers” should

CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONICS
Please do not send any electronic devices with your child(ren). If you feel that your child needs to carry a cell phone to and from school, please note that it MUST be turned off and put away while on school property UNLESS THE TEACHER PERMITS SPECIFIC USE OF THE DEVICE FOR EDUCATION PURPOSES (BYOD POLICY) AND THAT TEACHER IS DIRECTLY SUPERVISING THE USE OF THE DEVICE. If you have an urgent matter, we will be happy to get your child for you. Simply call the office. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items. Should students not comply with this simple rule, the electronic device can be confiscated. These devices have proven to be very distracting and have disrupted lessons. It is imperative that all students, when using their devices or school devices accessing the TCDSB electronic communications systems under staff supervision, comply by the rules of the Acceptable Use Policy of the TCDSB when accessing data or devices. Students must follow the AUP in order to prevent themselves from being banned from usage. The rule remains: OFF AND INVISIBLE”.

**NEW** SAFE ARRIVAL: THE NEW WAY TO REPORT STUDENT ABSENCE AND LATENESS SafeArrival is an absence management feature with SchoolMessenger that
improves student safety and makes it easy for you to let the school know about your child’s absence. You are asked to report your child’s absence in advance whenever possible using one of these convenient methods: SchoolMessenger app (free)
1. Provide your email address to the school. 2. Get the app from the Apple App Store or the
Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.com).
3. Tap Sign Up to create your account. 4. Select Attendance from the menu, and then
select Report an Absence.

Report an Absence
Interactive Toll-free Phone
1. Call the toll-free, interactive telephone system at 1 (833) 251-3286.
2. Follow the instructions to report an absence.
Absences can be reported in advance:
24 hours/day 7 days a week For any school day in the school term
Up to the cut-off time on the day of the absence.
Whenever an absence is reported or updated, you will receive a confirmation notice by email and/or text message (assuming you have provided your contact information to the school).
If you don’t report your child’s absence in advance, the automated notification system will try to contact you (using the communication preferences if you have set them up in the SchoolMessenger app). This may include
push notifications to the app, email, SMS text message, phone calls. You will be asked to provide the reason for your child’s absence immediately. You may do so using the phone line, website or mobile app.
If an absence is not explained within approximately 20 minutes of the time that the school starts the notification process, school staff will follow-up to make sure that your child is safe. If you try to explain an absence using SafeArrival but are then told that it is past the cut-off time, please contact the school directly.
If you don’t want to receive notifications when your child is absent,
be sure to report your child’s absence in advance. If you do receive notifications of your child’s absence, be sure to provide the reason as quickly as possible, using one of the 3 methods listed above or during the phone call notification itself.
Excursions and Field Trips
Educational trips which extend learning opportunities in curriculum areas do take place from time to time. Teachers follow appropriate Board procedures when planning these excursions. A limited number of trips may be planned by teachers. BY LAW the school must have on file permission forms which must be signed by the parents/guardians. If on the day of the excursion your child did not return his/her form, the student will remain at the school. VERBAL TELEPHONE PERMISSION IS NEVER ACCEPTABLE IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES. In order to avoid disappointment, hand in forms as early as possible. This helps teachers to organize groupings for supervision and to finalize payment and number of attendees for busses and venues. Last minute items delay departures and create disruptions to an otherwise enjoyable day. IMPORTANT: PLEASE INFORM THE OFFICE OF ANY
CHANGES REGARDING CONTACT INFORMATION.
IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY, WE WOULD
NEED TO CONTACT YOU. WE CANNOT DO SO
SHOULD YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION NOT BE
UP TO DATE. BE SURE TO UPDATE YOUR
CURRENT CONTACT INFORMATION AND YOUR
EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION.

LUNCHTIME
DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE A
NUTRITIOUS AND SATISFYING LUNCH
THAT WILL HEALTHILY SUSTAIN
THEM THROUGHOUT THEIR LONG
DAY?
(JUST A NOTE TO PARENTS: YOU ARE
DOING A VERY GOOD JOB!! KEEP IT
UP…WE HAVE NOTICED A
DIFFERENCE!!!)
One of the benefits of the media is how it informs us regarding our children’s health and the
importance of good nutrition for PROPER
GROWTH AND TO SUSTAIN FOCUS AND
ENERGY.
Many children come to school with an
excellent lunch and snacks that they enjoy and
that are not processed or pre-packaged. Although
the school can provide the occasional snack,
providing the best nutrition is a parental
responsibility and should be handled
conscientiously, as it is for the many of our
students. It has been noted that several students
crave and search for good, nutritious food from
other students. Others are clearly eating foods that are processed, filled with empty calories and
refined sugar. This clearly effects their focus and
behavior. Please make good nutrition and
sustenance for proper growth a priority for your
child’s busy day and healthy development.
NO PERMISSIONS TO LEAVE SCHOOL
GROUNDS:
To further ensure student well-being and safety,
students will not be permitted to leave school
property to purchase a lunch at a
neighborhood food establishment unless they
are signed out and accompanied by the parent/
guardian of the child, or a PRE-authorized
adult. The responsible, pre-authorized adult must
have previous written consent from the parent, a
record of which must be on file in the school
office.
Children are encouraged to eat lunch at home if a
parent or caregiver is at home every day.
Children going home for lunch should leave
the school no later than 11:15 a.m and return
to school no later than 12:13pm.
If your child eats lunch at school, please
ensure that he/she brings a lunch to school
every day. We ask that lunches not be
brought to school for the students.
In emergencies, when lunch must be
delivered please, DO NOT BRING
FAST FOOD :
WE MUST ALL support healthy eating
initiatives for overall health.
**We ask that lunches brought in be clearly
marked and left with the office staff in the
main office by 11:15 or SOONER. Students
can pick up their lunch at THE OFFICE
during their respective lunch period.
Parents/Guardians will not be permitted to
drop off lunches in the classrooms, nor will
students be permitted to pick up their lunches
during class time. This is to minimize
disruption during important instructional time
in the classroom.
The school is not responsible should a lunch
go ‘missing’ or is dropped or spilled.
Students staying at school for lunch must
follow all the lunch rules.
Students have limited time to finish their lunches
so it is important to be on time.
PLEASE NOTE: IF THE SCHOOL HAS ANY
CONCERNS REGARDING A STUDENTS’ WELL
BEING, WHICH INCLUDES REGULAR,
HEALTHLY LUNCHES, STAFF WILL CONSULT
WITH ADMINISTRATION WITH THEIR
CONCERNS. FOLLOW UP MAY INCLUDE
CONTACT WITH THE PARENT BY THE TEACHER
OR ADMINISTRATION, SOCIAL WORK
CONSULTATION, OR CATHOLIC CHILDREN’S
AID CONSULTATION FOR SUPPORT. IF YOU
HAVE DIFFICULTY MEETING YOUR CHILD’S
NUTRITIONAL NEEDS, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR
CHILD’S TEACHER OR THE PRINCIPAL TO
DISCUSS. THANK YOU.

-PEDESTRIAN AND DRIVER SAFETY REMINDERS-
BOTH SIDES OF DUCKWORTH STREET (The
front of the school) IS A PICK UP AND DROP
OFF AREA FOR BUSES ONLY.
THE SCHOOL OR BOARD ARE NOT
RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY TICKETS INCURRED
BY ANYONE NOT FOLLOWING TRAFFIC
LAWS OR PARKING BYLAWS. READ
SIGNAGE CAREFULLY AND PLEASE FOLLOW
SUGGESTIONS FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL AS
PROVIDED BELOW;
CARE-COURTESY-VIGILANCE FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL
***MORNING DROP OFF: WHENEVER
POSSIBLE, WALK TO SCHOOL***
USE THURODALE DRIVE AND
SURROUNDING STREETS. IT IS BETTER TO WALK A BIT OF A DISTANCE THAN TO HAVE INCIDENCES OCCUR DUE TO CONGESTION ISSUES.
STUDENTS MUST WAIT IN THE
SCHOOLYARD AND ENTER THE SCHOOL WITH THEIR CLASSES AT THE 8:30 BELL.
AVOID USING THE SCHOOL PARKING
LOT. USING THE PARKING LOT POSES DANGERS FOR PEDESTRIANS, PREVENTS TEACHERS FROM TENDING TO THEIR DAILY DUTIES AND BLOCKS OTHERS FROM LEAVING. The school parking lot is not a “kiss and ride”
or drop off area. It is VERY DANGEROUS to drop off a child in an active and crowded
parking lot. Use the surrounding streets and be careful when driving and walking during the busy drop off and pick up times.
***AFTERNOON PICK UP: WHENEVER
POSSIBLE, WALK HOME***
STUDENTS PICKED UP AT THE END OF THE DAY IN THE SCHOOLYARD SHOULE BE WALKED SAFELY TO THEIR VEHICLES OR HOME. BE SURE TO HOLD YOUR CHILD’S HAND. REMIND YOU CHILD NOT TO RUN AND TO STOP, AND TO LOOK AND LISTEN. DO NOT USE DUCKWORTH STREET FOR PICK UP OR DROP OFF.
STUDENTS MUST NOT BE PICKED UP FROM THE BUS LINE OR IN THE FRONT FOYER.
NO STUDENT IS TO BE SIGNED OUT AT
THE END OF THE DAY BETWEEN 2:30 AND 3:00 PM UNLESS WRITTEN NOTICE HAS BEEN PROVIDED TO THE CLASSROOM TEACHER IN THE MORNING.
SIGNOUT DURING THE FINAL HALF HOUR OF THE DAY DISRUPTS LEARNING AND CREATES CONGESTION AND CONFUSION IN THE FRONT OFFICE AT ONE OF THE BUSIEST TIMES OF THE DAY. DISMISSAL IS AT 3:00 PM.
WE MUST ALL RESPECT THESE PROCEDURES AND TIMES.
WE MUST ALL WORK TOGETHER FOR THE SAFETY
AND LEARNING OF ALL STUDENTS.
**************************************************
REMEMBER: SAFETY OVER CONVENIENCE!!! **************************************************
DISRUPTIONS TO THE SCHOOL DAY:
PLEASE HAVE ALL ITEMS TAKEN CARE
OF PRIOR TO THE SCHOOL DAY START
As a school of almost 700 students, it is very
important that we all work efficiently in our
homes and our school. Unnecessary
disruptions throughout the day delays
student and staff work.
Lunches, homework, visits
and any other items should
be tended to prior to the
beginning of the school day.
Your co-operation in this
matter will support us in maximizing our
order and productivity at the school.
2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME
***ATTENTION: DOES YOUR CHILD TAKE THE SCHOOL BUS???***
Please note: If your child is registered to ride the school bus, he or she must ride the school bus and not take the liberty to walk home or be picked up from the bus line on any given day. All students must adhere to all bus safety rules and must ride the buses to and from school every day. Failure to do so can lead to the loss of bus privileges and parents will be responsible to devise a plan for safe travel to and from school for their child. Please discuss this with your child if he or she is a bus student. Students either take the bus each day or they forfeit the use of school bus transportation. When bus students spontaneously decide to walk home or parents give permission to do so sporadically, there are gaps to safety. A STUDENT IS EITHER ON THE BUS OR OFF. THERE ARE NO HOP OFF /HOP ON OPTIONS. FRIENDS NOT ON THE BUS LIST ARE NOT PERMITTED TO TAKE THE BUS FOR “VISITS”. Please keep in mind that there are NINE buses that operate out of the school at the end of each day so we really do need your support. We appreciate your cooperation with
this very important safety matter. SCHOOL SAFETY & VISITORS
In an effort to keep our students safe at all
times, the following has been implemented:
All school doors are kept locked.
All visitors entering the school grounds
and/or building, including parents/guardians,
babysitters and siblings, must first report to
the office to identify themselves. THIS IS A
SCHOOL BOARD/SAFE SCHOOLS
POLICY.
Parents are to drop off their children in the
schoolyard at the beginning of the day.
Children are to wait in the yard until their
teachers come to pick them up when the bell
rings.
After school, parents are asked to pick up
their children in the school yard. Because of
the large number of children, the small space
and lack of supervision, children cannot wait
in the main office to be picked up after
school. Dismissal is at 3 pm.
Please make sure that all children are
picked up on time.
***A NOTE TO PARENTS: IF YOU ARE IN THE
BUILDING DURING A LOCKDOWN, PLEASE
ENSURE THAT YOU TAKE PART IN THIS
EMERGENCY PROCEDURE, REMAINING INDOORS
AND PARTICIPATING AS REQUESTED SO AS NOT
TO COMPROMISE THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS
BY EXITING OR OPENING DOORS AT ANY TIME
DURING A LOCKDOWN.***
PEDICULOSIS: Pediculosis is
commonly known as lice, is a
common, but pesky problem in
schools and among children.
Children are reminded not to share caps or
hats, combs and brushes or hair accessories.
Parents are encouraged to check regularly
and to use preventative measures to ensure
that their child(ren) do not contract any lice.

Let’s Help Catholic Charities by
Supporting ShareLife ShareLife’s mission is to “Live the Gospel by providing for
those in need” This is done through their support of many
diverse Catholic social service agencies here in the GTA and
beyond.
This year, ShareLife Week for Schools will be celebrated the
week of April 8-12. All students and staff are invited Board-
wide Civvies Day on Friday, April 12, 2019 to raise funds
for the ShareLife campaign. Your donation of a loonie or a
toonie will go a long way to supporting youth, the elderly, the
marginalized and the vulnerable.
We thank everyone in the TCDSB community for all that they
do throughout the year to help others—giving of their time
and their resources to make a difference. We applaud those
efforts, and take great pride in the commitment to living our
Catholic values and putting faith into action.

Kids and Flu
The flu germs spread when people cough, sneeze or
talk. The flu germs can also live on surfaces like
toys, countertops, and door handles for up to eight
hours.
Students can pass the flu germs to each other, to
school staff and to family members before they
show symptoms. Children under five, seniors and
people in poor health are at greater risk of
complications from flu.
Vaccination is the best protection against flu. It
takes 2 weeks for the vaccine to be fully effective so
get it early.
Tips on staying healthy this flu Season:
1. Get your flu shot early
2. Wash your hands often
3. Avoid touching face and eyes
4. Cover your cough or sneeze
5. Do not share drinking cups and utensils
6. Disinfect common surfaces like door
handles, hand railings, keyboards, cell
phones and tablets.

YOU WILL BE HEARING ABOUT: LEARNING GOALS AND SUCCESS CRITERIA
Effective assessment and evaluation methods act to support and improve student learning. Sharing learning goals and success criteria with students at the outset of learning ensures that students and teachers have a common and shared understanding of these goals and criteria as learning progresses. This relationship between the two (Success Criteria refer to and depend on a Learning Goal) means that Learning Goals need to be written first, before Success Criteria. Learning Goals specify the learning that is intended for a lesson, and Success Criteria indicate how students can demonstrate that learning. When they are co-created and written in student friendly language, learning becomes more accessible for our students.
