On-Line Giving Report — March

Faithful Steward Reflection Lord Jesus Christ, we humbly pray that by serving others we serve You. Keep us vigilant and eager to answer your call give us a servant’s heart and allow us to do your work with strength and joy. We ask this in Jesus Christ’s name, Amen! Picture Jesus sitting at an old-fashioned telephone switch board. The inbound calls are actually prayers and Jesus answers them with “This is the Lord and Savior; how may I direct your call?” The voice on the other side explains that they are in need of food and shelter. Jesus replies, one moment please as he reaches for the cable to complete the circuit to connect the call. At that moment Fred pulls his car into the St. Vincent De Paul parking lot to work his normal ministry hours. He notices a couple outside praying and a feeling comes over him that he needs to make sure they receive the assistance they need. Jesus now plugs the patch cable in and completes the call. We have all heard of the expression of “answering the call” but in fact answering the call is no different than what was described above. Fred made himself available to God so that the call could be completed. But first Fred had to answer the call that the Lord had made to him. To answer a call from the Lord you need to be receptive. You can’t have the phone turned off or it will never ring. To turn on the phone you need to pray and ask that God use you for whatever he has planned and to be His steward. The next step is you have to listen for the phone to ring. When it does ring you have to make sure to answer it! It might be a tug at your heart to serve in a ministry or to help someone outside of church. Whatever you’re being asked to do you can be sure that it is God calling when it helps someone or provides something good from your actions or deeds. Pray and ask God for direction so that our number is always available and Jesus never gets a message that says ‘this number is no longer in service or has been disconnected”. Yahweh then came and stood by, calling as he had done before, 'Samuel! Samuel!' Samuel answered, 'Speak, Yahweh; for your servant is listening. ~ 1 Samuel 3-10 Faithful Steward, Rob Stagg

The harvest is great, the laborers

Join us in praying for vocations in the

Chapel at 7:30 am on Thursdays.

“Shepherd” vocabulary is used throughout the Old Testament as a way to describe how God cares for his people. For example, Psalm 23:1-3: “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack. In green pastures he makes me lie down; to still waters he leads me; he restores my soul. He guides me along right paths for the sake of his name.” Ezekiel 34:14 describes how God will lead his people like a shepherd: “In good pastures I will pasture them; on the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down on good grazing ground; in rich pastures they will be pastured on the mountains of Israel.” In today’s Gospel Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd. In verse 11 he says, “A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” While this statement ultimately points to his death and resurrection, “lays down his life” also indicates the life of service he led; as one who came to serve and not to be served, an example for all of us. Jesus’ life as the Good Shepherd also gives our Church leaders an example, an example for all the shepherds who would follow after him to lead the Church – Peter, and all the popes, bishops, and pastors who would follow to this day, entrusted to lead his flock. This Sunday pray for our Church leaders that they continue to model the example of Christ the Good Shepherd, as one who cares for the flock, seeks those who have wandered, and brings all back into one-fold. Deacon Paul Foltyn

The Good Shepherd

III The Content of Evangelization

ON AN EVANGELICAL CONCEPT OF MAN 35. The Church links human liberation and salvation in Jesus Christ because she knows from revelation, historical experience and the reflection of faith that not every notion of liberation is consistent with an evangelical vision of man and events. The Church knows that for God’s kingdom to come it is not enough to establish liberation and to create well-being and development. More, the Church is firmly convinced that all temporal liberation carries within itself the germ of its own negation. Whenever zeal lacks a truly spiritual dimension and its final goal is not salvation and happiness in God, it fails to reach the ideal of justice in charity. INVOLVING A NECESSARY CONVERSION 36. The Church considers it to be undoubtedly important to build up structures that are more human. But she is also conscious that the best structures soon become inhuman if the inhuman inclinations of the human heart are not made wholesome. EXCLUDING VIOLENCE 37. The Church cannot accept violence and indiscriminate death as the path to liberation. She knows that violence always provokes violence, engendering new forms of oppression and enslavement. As I said in my visit to Columbia, “We exhort you not to place your trust in violence and revolution. That is contrary to the Christian spirit. Violence is not in accord with the Gospel. It is not Christian and certainly not in accord with the dignity of people.” SPECIFIC CONTRIBUTION OF THE CHURCH 38. We rejoice that the Church is becoming ever more conscious of the proper manner and strictly evangelical means to collaborate in the liberation of many, encouraging large numbers of Christians to devote themselves to the liberation of men. All this must characterize the spirit of a committed Christian without confusion of tactical attitudes or in service of political systems. The Church strives always to insert the Christian struggle for liberation into the universal plan of salvation that she herself proclaims. It is to be hoped that these considerations will help remove the ambiguity that the word “liberation” very often takes on in ideologies and political systems. The liberation that evangelization proclaims is the one that Christ Himself announced and gave to man by His sacrifice. RELIGIOUS LIBERTY 39. The necessity of ensuring fundamental human rights cannot be separated from just liberation, bound to evangelization. Among these fundamental human rights, religious liberty occupies pride of place. How many Christian still today, because they are Christian, because they are Catholic, live under systematic persecution.
