PAPAL DOCUMENTS Condensed by Deacon Bill Wagner
(Document of Vat II: Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: Promulgated by Pope Paul VI, December 4,
1963)
SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM CHAPTER VII
SACRED ART AND SACRED FURNISHINGS Fine arts are ranked among the noblest activities of man’s genius, especially religious art and sacred art. These are oriented to the infinite beauty of God. They achieve their purpose of redounding to God’s glory in proportion as they are directed to the aim of turning men’s minds toward God. Holy Mother Church has always been the friend of the fine arts with the aim that all things set apart for use in divine worship should be truly worthy, signs of the supernatural world. The Church has always reserved the right to pass judgment upon the arts, deciding which are in accordance with faith. The Church has been careful to see that sacred furnishings should serve the dignity of worship. She has admitted changes prompted by progress of the technical arts. It has pleased the fathers to issue these decrees: The Church has not adopted any particular style of art as her own. Throughout the centuries, she has bought into being a treasury of art that must be very carefully preserved. The art of our own days shall also be given free scope in the Church, provided that it adorns the sacred buildings and holy rites with due reverence. Ordinaries, by the favor they show truly sacred art, vestments, and ornaments, should strive for noble beauty. Let bishops carefully remove from the house of God and other sacred places works of artists repugnant to faith, morals, and Christian piety. When churches are built, let great care be taken that they be suitable for the celebration of liturgical services and for the active participation of the faithful. The placing sacred images in churches so as to be venerated by the faithful is to be maintained. Their number should be moderate and their relative position should reflect right order, lest they create confusion among the Christian people and foster devotion of doubtful orthodoxy. Ordinaries must take care that sacred furnishings and works of value are not disposed of. They are the ornaments of the house of God. Bishops should have concern for artists to imbue them with the spirit of sacred art and liturgy. Schools of sacred art should be founded wherever they would be useful. All artists who, prompted by their talents, desire to serve God’s glory in holy Church, should bear in mind that they are engaged in a kind of sacred imitation of God the Creator. They should strive to edify the faithful and foster their piety and religious formation. The canons and ecclesiastical statutes governing the provision of material things involved in sacred worship should be revised. Laws less suited to the reformed liturgy are to be brought into harmony with it or abolished, while helpful ones are to be retained. The territorial bodies of bishops are empowered to adapt such things to the needs of their different regions. Clerics are to be taught about sacred art and the sound principles of the production of its work so that they may able to appreciate the Church’s heritage. It is fitting that the use of pontificals be reserved to those persons of episcopal rank or of some particular jurisdiction.
