Following a finaltraining session to goover last-minute

details, the 25 census takerswere ready to begin thecensus of the population ofSaint Barth, beginning onJanuary 18. Intended todetermine the official popu-lation of French communi-ties and territories, the cen-sus process underwentsweeping organizationchanges in 2004. Sincethen, the census is nolonger taken every 10years, but continues on anannual basis, with differenttowns of less than 10,000inhabitants on the scheduleeach year. In 2007, it’s timefor Saint Barth, Bouillante,Vieux Fort, and AnseBertrand (three towns onthe island of Guadeloupe)to go under the magnifyingglass of the census takers.To complete the tour of the19 towns in Guadeloupewith less than 10,000 habi-tants, the next group sched-uled for 2008 includesDeshaies, La Désirade,Petit Louis, and VieuxHabitants. At this end ofthis process, the officialpopulation of the depart-

ment of Guadeloupe can bedetermined, and the num-ber will be announced earlyin 2009. The census consists of fill-ing out several forms, thefirst of which consists of 25questions such as age, placeof birth, nationality, level ofeducation, place of resi-dence for the past fiveyears, and profession. Thisform must be filled out forevery resident in everyhome, including infants.The second form concerns“housing,” and includes 15questions relative to thecharacteristics and comfortof the residence. The formis slighting different for the

French Antilles where thequestion about heating hasbeen replaced by one aboutair-conditioning in thehome. Every census takerwill be armed with a multi-colored photo ID card,signed by the mayor. Allresidents have the right torequest to see that cardwhen the census takercomes to the door, and toconfirm the agent’s identityby calling City Hall in caseof doubt. The census is obligatory.The data collected serves todetermine the operatingbudget and infrastructurerequired by each town.

On Monday, Dominique Guérin Benhaddouche, director of thepopulation census in Guadeloupe, and Nathalie Defay, hisassociate, led the last meeting for local census takers, who

began counting the population in Saint Barth as of January 18.

Joshua Gindele playscello with the highlycelebrated Miró Quar-

tet (www.miroquartet.com),which makes its debut atthe St. Barth Music Festi-val on Friday, January 26 atthe Anglican Church inGustavia. It may be theQuartet's first appearance,but Gindele discovered thecharms of Saint Barth andthe festival last year, whenhe played in the orchestra."My father knows FrancesDe Broff," says Gindele,who was born near Pitts-burgh, PA, and is nowbased in Austin, Texas."And she is on the board ofthe Pittsburgh ChamberMusic Society where wehave played." Gindelefound the first year a littlechallenging, but is delight-ed to return. "Frances andJill DeBroff don’t alwaysclue you in to exactly whathappens when you get tothe island," he says, "but it

all works out perfectly inthe end. I sort of knewwhat I had to play, butFrances assembles someof the best musicians inthe world. That makes iteasy to play together andthe lack of rehearsal timeis not a problem." Gindele started playingthe cello at an early age—the age of three to beexact— encouraged by hisparents, amateur musi-cians who wanted all oftheir children to play aninstrument. "I didn't havea choice," Gindele recalls."I think as a young person Ienjoyed it and improvedrapidly, at least accordingto my teachers." After ateenage period where itdidn't seem cool to tote acello around, Gindele wentback to music and evenspent some time on theroad playing country musicwith the Oak Ridge Boys.Then at Oberlin College,

he met fellow students andeventually formed the MiróQuartet. The quartet startedout as four students fromOberlin, then John Largess,viola, and Sandy Yamamo-to, violin, who came fromother schools, joined Gin-dele and violinist DanielChing."We won a lot of competi-tions in the beginning, andgot on radar screens veryquickly. But we didn't get a

lot of concerts at first,"Gindele notes. "Awardsare not a career." But theawards gave the foursomeenough courage and con-fidence to continue, andthey now play as many as60 to 90 concerts a year.As for their repertory inSaint Barth, they will beplaying pieces by Haydn,S h o s t a k o v i c h , a n dBeethoven, with Gindeletaking the lead in theShostakovich QuartetNo. 14, F sharp major,Opus 133. "It was written

as a tour de force for thecello," he says. "The Hay-den is the most challengingfor the first violinist, andthe Beethoven is the mostdifficult for the entireensemble." When it comesto classical music, Gindelekeeps an open ear: "I likeanything that's good," hesays. "I'm not really thatparticular."

Highlights of thisyear’s festivalinclude a free rock

concert featuring drummerTed Atkatz and his band,NYCO, the debut of theMiro Quartet, and thereturn of the John Ellis JazzQuartet from New Orleans,with Jason Marsalis on per-cussion. Two commis-sioned pieces will also beperformed, one a jazz piecewritten by Ellis for flautistMathieu Dufour, principalflute of the Chicago Sym-phony Orchestra; the sec-ond is a trombone concertoby James Stevenson, with

soloist Nitzan Haroz. Theannual opera evening clos-es the festival on February2, and features Pagliacci,conducted by RichardBuckely. An orchestra con-cert, a concert by the Suzu-ki violin students, a pianoand flute concert, andanother chamber musicconcert round out the festi-val menu.

showcase for artists. Withpaintings by MichelleMarie on display, and thewhite abstract sculpturesof Philippe Defruits ontables and even gracingthe swimming pool, thelatest addition is the workof Fulvio Maria Scavia, athird-generation Italiancreator of unique jewelry.He has a piece in the col-lection of the Museum ofModern Art in New YorkCity and has won Dia-mond International Awardsfor pieces that show offdiamonds of all shapes andcolors. From the fire ofrubies to the cool ice ofthose diamonds, Scavia’scollection can now be seenat the Carat boutique inGustavia, where it meetwith success over the pastfew seasons (his personalrepresentative on theisland is Letizie Vanni).“This is the first time Ihave come to Saint Barthmyself,” said Scavia over

a cup of tea at the CarlGustav last week, before agala dinner to show hiswork to friends andclients. Two young womenwere adorned with hisnecklaces and earrings,and one of them put on anintriguing gold braceletcalled The Wave of TheSea, which looks like amodern sculpture on thetable, yet gracefullyentwined her wrist, thegold sparking in the light.Based in Milan, where hismanufacturing and flag-ship store are based (healso sells in Moscow,Tokyo, New York, andDubai), Scavia works withclients from the four cor-ners of the globe, and likesto meet them personally asoften as possible. “Eachpiece is unique and createdwith a special woman inmind. A piece for onewoman is not for another,”he says, recalling a specialpair of emerald cabochonearrings made for theQueen of Thailand. “I flewto Bangkok to design the

earrings in front of her,then went back to Milan tomake them, and sent themto Thailand by courier.” Amodern woman can wearScavia’s creations: “theymake her feel more beauti-ful and more charming,”he says. He prides himselfon innovation and techni-cal precision of his workas well as the happiness itcan bring the wearer. Hiscollection includes a ring,necklace, and bracelet inthe form of a snake, withdiamonds for the body andpink sapphires for theeyes. “It is not a nastysnake, but a very charming

one,” he says. “The pinkstones are soft.” When itcomes to “ice,” he con-fides: “I like diamonds,but I’ll tell you the truth. Iprefer colored stones —rubies, emeralds, sap-phires, and colored dia-monds — they are moreinteresting.” The stonesScavia uses range fromantique gems from India tothose that his buyers findall over the world, fromAfrica to Brazil to Asia.“Stones are like women,”he says with a smile. “It’sultimately the charm, notthe beauty itself thatmakes the difference.”

Last week, the mem-bers of the SaintBarth Rotary Club

welcomed Alastair Pater-son, governor of District7020 since July 1, 2006.This district, whichincludes Saint Barth, iscomposed of 68 clubslocated on 10 differentislands in the LesserAntilles. The outgoinggovernor visits each clubduring the year. Scottish bybirth, Alastair Paterson haslived for the past few yearsin the Cayman Islands. InSaint Barth, he met withmayor Bruno Magras andattended a meeting of thelocal Rotarians, duringwhich Laurent de Fab-rique, president of the

Saint Barth Rotary Club,gave his mid-term report.He noted that the club hadinitiated collections ofclothing and shoes forneeded people in Guade-loupe, helped finance theformation of a local RedCross unit, contributed toschool fees for certain stu-dents, and organized acareer day at the local jun-ior high. Laurent de Fab-rique indicated that inorder to finance theseactivities, the club ran a tagsale and a harp concert.The harpist also played atthe Hospital De Bruyn forthe pleasure of the seniorcitizens who reside there aswell as those who weresick.

They were the first toimplement the useof bags made of

cornstarch—now the ASBgroup of supermarkets hasonce again taken the leadin environmental protec-tion activity. As of January1, 2007, the group decidedto remove all plastic bagsfrom its five markets inorder to meet the require-ments of a law passed onJanuary 6, 2006, which setthe date of January 1, 2010as the end of the use of all

plastic bags in France. Inthe place of bags madefrom petroleum products,clients must now use card-board boxes, the reusablecornstarch bags availableat ten cents each, or for aeuro they can purchase agreen "ecology" tote bagpromoted by the associa-tion, Saint Barth Environ-ment (or you can do asFrench housewives havedone for centuries: carry astraw shopping basket).Bravo ASB!

Fabien Gevraise, age 42,was found dead at his homein Anse des Cayes on Sat-urday, January 13. Hisemployer was worried ashe hadn’t seen him at workby mid-morning that day,and asked the staff at theresidence where lived tocheck on him. The doctorconcluded that his deathwas due to natural causesand put no medical or legalbarriers to his burial.

The cars of five touristswere stolen last week,including three in Gustavia

over the weekend. Thepolice found those threevehicles in the area of Lori-ent, while those stolen ear-lier in the week were locat-ed in Saint Jean. The driv-ers of these “borrowed”cars found them as they leftthem, that is to say, withthe keys in the ignition.

Thirty people were stoppedfor breaking the rules of theroad during the past week:from the prohibited use ofcell phones while driving tonot wearing seat belts andhelmets.
