    Year of Mercy

Corporal Work of Mercy - Shelter the Homeless

The Christian tradition of providing hospitality, specifically of providing food and shelter to strangers, is deeply rooted in our faith tradition, stretching back to the time of Abraham, our father in faith who treated the three strangers to his tent to the customary hospitality of a splendid meal (Gn 18). We witness in the story of Ruth, the welcome extended to her by the Israelites, though she was a stranger to them and a widow without a home. It is important to remember that our own Lord, Jesus Christ, understood firsthand the plight of the homeless - born in a stable and, in order to escape the wrath of Herod, fleeing to Egypt where the holy family lived as refugees and strangers for several years. Listed below are some practical ways to practice this corporal work of mercy:

Support Lazarus House's transitional housing program through the annual Hike for Hope

Volunteer at or support Habitat for Humanity or donate time or goods to their Re-Store

Help an elderly/disabled neighbor with home repairs/care for their property

Support a family who is fostering and/or adopting a child by offering to babysit or tutor the child for free

Learn about and support the International Institute of New England which helps refugees and immigrants settle in new homes and find work

Pro-actively welcome new families in our parish

Invite someone to Mass who hasn't been in a while or who is searching for a spiritual "home"

Around the Parish Our monthly Bread and Roses commitment is this Tuesday, February 23rd. School News

Students at St. Augustine School celebrated Valentine’s Day by supporting others. On Friday, February 12th, the school hosted a “Spread the Love” day in which students and teachers in every grade were encouraged to dress down in red, white, and pink in support of a noteworthy organization. This dress down was especially unique because students were allowed to dye their hair pink or red, wear nail polish, or wear hats for additional donations. Students were extra spirited for the holiday, while making a difference. All of the money raised was donated to the Inner City Catholic School

Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for students who wish to attend Catholic schools but cannot afford to do so. Students culminated the day with letter writing to students in inner city Catholic schools in Boston. What a great way to spread love this holiday! Pictured here are fourth grade students Brooke Kelley, Olivia Jeffries, Anneke Tapp, and Chiara Miles. Staff worked hard over the vacation week to move the pre-school and pre-K into the beautiful new St. Julie Billiart Early Education Center. Check out the photos on page 7.

RCIA and the Rite of Election

On Sunday, February 14th, our catechumens joined hundreds of fellow catechumens and candidates at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston to celebrate the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion. The celebration was presided over by Cardinal Séan Francis O'Malley who was assisted, among others, by St. Augustine's own Dcn. Lou Piazza and altar server Leah Dennett. In his homily, Cardinal Séan noted that the catechumens were joining over 150,000 other catechumens in the 200 cathedrals throughout the country celebrating the Rite on this day and reminded those present that Lent is a time to prepare not just for Baptism and the renewal of Baptismal vows, but for eternal life. He encouraged the catechumens to be disciples of the Lord and to bring God’s loving mercy into a broken world. During the Celebration of Election, each catechumen was

called by forward name to the foot of the Sanctuary accompanied by their Godparents. The Godparents testified that the catechumens had listened to God’s Word proclaimed by the Church, begun to walk in God’s presence and shared with their Christian brothers and sisters in prayer. The Cardinal then asked the assembly for their prayerful support and he asked the catechumens to confirm their desire to enter into the life of the Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. After affirmation on all counts, the Cardinal declared the Church’s “election” of the catechumens and invited them to offer their names for enrollment in the Book of the Elect. By signing the Book of the Elect, with their Godparent’s hand on their shoulder, the catechumens, now known as the “elect”, enter the final stage of the RCIA, the Period of Purification and Enlightenment. The focus of this period will transition from catechesis to reflection, as the elect are encouraged to prayerfully examine their lives to discern their need for repentance and to reject sin in preparation for accepting God’s mercy and grace. As we continue to accompany our elect on their journey to the sacraments of initiation, let us continue to keep in our prayers all of the elect and candidates throughout the country and the world.

    Youth Ministry

Thank you to the many who made donations for the mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Although the trip was cancelled due to concerns about the Zika Virus, your donations have been put to good use by Hands to Help of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Lawrence, a program run by Merrimack College to assist residents of Lawrence in various ways such as with tutoring, college and career counseling services, and general assistance.

Alisha Reppucci, Director of H2H, said, "I want to sincerely thank [St. Augustine's] for your donation to Hands to Help this week. We have already started giving out the school supplies to the children that we tutor in Lawrence. Today I brought some of the toiletries to the people who live underneath the Casey bridge. It is my hope that I can also bring a suitcase full of your donations to the orphanage in Peru that Merrimack students will be doing service at in March. These donations will be put to great use and those who have already received them were extremely grateful. I can assure you that your donations are in good hands and will be distributed to those in need as soon as possible. On behalf of the Hands to Help staff I want to thank you for your donation and for all that you do in our community. Thank you!" Dear Parishioners, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all of you for your well wishes, for your healing cards, funny cards, for your home visits, the soups, the sweets, the books and the outpouring support that I experienced in this past 5 weeks during the recovery after my (second) knee replacement surgery. Yes, and not to forget, the delicious, hot cups of coffee, while in Wingate! Last Sunday, on the First Sunday of Lent was my first time back to mass and it was wonderful to be back, still limping, but feeling the support of our church community. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

See page 8 for information on the Parish Lenten Retreat being held next week - Feb 28th- March 1. All those attending are asked to bring, as a donation, a food item for our new dessert baking effort for Bread and Roses - flour, sugar, oats, etc. or monetary donation for fresh items. Stations of the Cross will be held each Friday evening during Lent at 7pm. This year we will be using meditations at each station focused on the theme of mercy. Please join us! The first Lenten fish bake is this Friday, February 26th from 4:30-6:30pm. Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, $12/adult, $7/under age 10/free under age 5. Includes baked fish and assorted sides. Irish music provided by the KoC Rambling Boys. Fish bakes will also be held on March 11th and 18th. 24 Hours for the Lord - Beginning on Friday evening, March 4th and continuing until Saturday evening’s Vigil Mass, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for Adoration and the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered in selected parishes throughout the Archdiocese. Locally this will be held at St. Theresa in North Reading and St. Joseph the Worker Shrine in Lowell.

Evening Prayer, Wednesdays at 6:15pm - The prayers of the Liturgy of the Hours are drawn from Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition and rooted in the Jewish custom of praying throughout the day, a practice that was continued in the early Church. Today, the Liturgy of the Hours is prayed continuously throughout the world with the purpose of unifying the Church and sanctifying each hour of the day. The believer who prays the Liturgy of the Hours not only

sanctifies his own activities in the day but unites himself to Christ and His Church. As the pre-eminent prayer of the Church, outside of the Liturgy, the laity (that's us!) are encouraged to pray certain parts of it, especially the Morning (Lauds) and Evening (Vespers) prayers. On Wednesday evenings during Lent at 6:15pm, there will be a communal praying of Evening Prayer in the church. This will be followed by the Sacrament of Reconciliation at 6:30pm as part of the Archdiocesan wide "The Light is on for You" initiative. All are welcome.

Understanding the Triduum - Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Saturday, March 12th, 8:45am in the parish center. Presented by Fr. Rich O'Leary, OSA. Teen Stations of the Cross - Monday, March 21st, 7:30pm in St. Augustine Church. All are welcome to this powerful presentation by our teens, offered this year in memory of Colleen Ritzer and her legacy of kindness.

    Featured Ministry Cursillo

St. Augustine Parish is truly blessed to have more than 30 ministries which provide a variety of services within our parish and throughout our local community. Our parishioners truly understand what it means to respond to the call to service and to fulfill the corporal works of mercy. Each week, a different ministry is featured here. For a complete list and description of each ministry, visit www.staugustineparish.org and for more info please contact the listed coordinator.

Cursillo, which means "short course in Christianity", is a three day experience led by spiritual directors and lay people, with talks, sharing, prayer and liturgies that lead participants to better know themselves and Christ and to live the message of the Gospel in their daily lives. The experience is designed for each individual to take away what he or she needs at that given point in the faith journey.

We are a strong, active community whose membership includes St. Augustine parishioners as well as Cursillistas from neighboring parishes. Many meet in small reunion groups, weekly or bi-monthly, or at the larger monthly reunion called the Ultreya. We gather to share with others our continued journey with the Lord. Ultreyas are held the first Sunday of each month. All Cursillistas and anyone interested in learning about Cursillo are welcome. Many participants return to their parish community ready to take a more active role in parish life.
