Welcome to St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church!

We are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us during this Season after Pentecost.

For many Christians the weeks after Pentecost are called Ordinary Time, “ordinary” meaning in

regular rows or ranks undistinguished from another. This is the character of Ordinary Time, the

days after Pentecost, the largest part of the church year, and most of our life. It is not a time of

celebration that draws into wonder nor a time of crisis that causes one to change. Ordinary Time

is a time of being. However, it must be said that this time is not without character and color, for

during this season of the year we explore what it means to live in the eternal day that is ours

through baptism into Christ’s eternal life. In this post Pentecostal season we explore what it

means to be children of God, to be in Christ, and to be on fire with the Spirit.

Like all of God’s creation, we are surrounded by the lush green that is present. It is a bountiful

time of being. In these moments, we rest in the knowledge that we are transformed and

empowered people experiencing the presence of the Spirit through the Word proclaimed and the

Sacraments shared.

It is with that awareness we live lives in tune with the present and filled with God’s love toward

all around us. Only then will our lives take on the vibrant green of the season, of ordinary life

and yet deeply alive!

If this is your first time in the Episcopal Church, everything you need to follow worship is in

this Worship Guide. If you have any questions please to not hesitate to ask any member around

you for help.

I hope to meet you before and/or after worship, but just in case I do not, please fill out the

attendance sheet in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so we can connect with you.

Again, welcome to you and your family.

Blessings,

Fr. Joseph C. Alsay +

Rector

Gathering Hymn: “Come Ye Thankful People, Come” St. George’s Windsor

Salutation and Collect of the Day

Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Let us pray.

Almighty and gracious Father, we give you thanks for the fruits of the earth in their season and for the labors of those who harvest them. Make us, we pray, faithful stewards of your great bounty, for the provision of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

+ THE LITURGY OF THE WORD +

Please be seated. The Lesson: Deuteronomy 26:1-11

Lector A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy

When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the

land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, "Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us." When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, you shall make this response before the Lord your God: "A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me." You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house.

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Please stand. Gospel Acclamation: “We Gather Together” Kremser

The Holy Gospel: Luke 4:14-21

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When the crowd found Jesus on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal." Then they said to him, "What must we do to perform the works of God?" Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent." So they said to him, "What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, `He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" Then Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." They said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always."

Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

During this time we invite you to reflect, meditate pray or engage in another silent activity.

Please stand at the sound of the bell. Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Please stand or kneel Eucharistic Prayer B

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

+ THIS IS OUR STORY +

The Feast of Christ the King is celebrated in Catholic and Lutheran Churches on the last Sunday before Advent (which is today). Although this feast is not on the Episcopal calendar, our Collect for today for the Last Sunday

after Pentecost echoes the Collect for the Feast of Christ the King in the Roman Missal. Our Collect for this Sunday celebrates Christ’s kingship and sovereign rule over all of creation, and in it we request that God, “whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of king and Lord of lords,” will “mercifully grant

that the peoples of the earth... may be... brought together under his most gracious rule.” Some churches on this Sunday incorporate into their service a “Visitation to the Blessed Sacrament”. In this devotion, the presence of

Jesus Christ in the consecrated bread is honored with the same reverence as would be paid a sovereign - i.e., Christ the King. The concept is that Jesus is holding court. A consecrated priest’s host is placed in a beautifully ornate holder called a monstrance, and the congregation is invited to visit and worship this visible symbol of Christ - our

King.

If you have a liturgical question or an inquiry about anything that transpires during or around our worship service, please forward the question you would like researched to: [email protected], or drop the question in the

offering basin. Please note whether we can credit you as the source of the question.
