Love and Obedience

This Easter Season, our Sunday Scriptures have helped us delve more deeply into the mystery of the Resurrection and its impact on our lives. The Resurrection is the source of joy and celebration because it has robbed death of its sting and ability to terrorize us. It is the ultimate manifestation of divine mercy, which makes us an Easter people, invites us into a frank assessment of our lives, and offers us a way to healing, forgiveness and peace. It reminds us that as the Good Shepherd, Jesus, the Risen One, knows us intimately, heals our spiritual wounds and guides us to safe pastures. The mystery of the Resurrection summons us to be good shepherds and mentors for others who are lost, who do not yet know the Risen Lord, who need to be reassured that they are not alone, that they are wanted, that they are loved, that they too are included among the Easter people.

Today’s readings explore how the Resurrection transforms our understanding and experience of love and obedience. For an Easter people, love is not just a feeling that comes and goes and makes no demands; obedience is not a burdensome and slavish adherence to rules and regulations.

1 John reminds us that love is of God. God is love, and we are only able to love because, as Jesus says in the Gospel of John, it was not you that chose me, but I who chose you. God loves us first and, in so doing, shows us how to love. This is the love that in truth … shows no partiality. God’s love, manifested in the Resurrection, is not limited to a few, but is the inheritance of all who fear God, act uprightly, accept God’s love, and respond to it. God’s love is available to saint and sinner alike. It excludes no one, but it does demand a response. Love is more than a good feeling and pretty words; it must be lived. This is the type of love that not only shares what it has with others, even with those who reject it, but even gives its life so that others might have life. This is what Jesus did on the cross. As the Father fills the Son with his paternal love, the Son takes on our human nature so that he can imbue us with that same love by his perfect act of love and obedience on the Cross. As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. We remain in his love if we keep his commandment -- if we love others with the same love that he loves us – if we obey him.

The Resurrection understanding of obedience, however, is not that of master and slave, which is a relationship based on authority and force. The obedience Jesus manifests to the Father and asks of us is the obedience between friends, which is based on love and affection. The biblical understanding of obedience is different from our modern interpretation. The Latin, Greek and Hebrew words for the verb “to obey” (obedire, υπακούω, שמע) all mean “to listen to,” “to hear,” or “to pay attention to.” Obedience, in the biblical sense, is listening to God and paying attention to his Word, who is the Christ. Jesus listened to the Father through his earthly trials, hardships and sufferings. He continued to pay attention to the Father’s love for him even on the cross. Such listening, even unto death, allowed Jesus to take our death and infuse his divine life and love in us. When we obey Jesus’ command to love others as he loves us, we can share with them his divine life and love, which is also the divine live and love of the Father. This kind of obedience asks us to listen and to be receptive, so that we might know and live in true freedom. We listen under the direction of the Holy Spirit, and we are receptive to the God’s activity in our lives, so that we can be free to become what God has called us to be – his friends, no longer slaves to sin, no longer imprisoned by fear of death, but set free to love as Jesus loves.

St. Augustine said love and do what you will. Some people mistake his words as permission to do whatever they want whenever they want and to ignore obedience, especially when it is inconvenient. The Resurrection understanding of love and obedience is based on fraternal charity, on the principle of discernment, which helps us determine at any moment what obedience to God’s command means – to love like Jesus loves, emptying himself for others and calling us into friendship with the Father. Do this and we can do nothing but good.

The visible sign of our love of Jesus is our obedience to his command to love one another as he loves us. Loving and obeying in this way, for he has chose us for this purpose, allows us to bear abundant fruit that will remain and to know with certainty that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. Inspired with this confidence, we join the psalmist’s joyful refrain: Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds.

Easter blessings, Fr. Chris 2

U.S. Bishop Chairmen for Doctrine and for Pro-Life Address the Use of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 Vaccine

WASHINGTON– On March 2, Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Commi ee on Doctrine, and Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City in Kansas, chair-man of the USCCB’s Commi ee on Pro-Life Ac vi es, issued a statement on the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine recently approved for use in the United States. “The approval of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine for use in the United States again raises ques ons about the moral permissibility of using vaccines developed, tested, and/or produced with the help of abor on-derived cell lines. “Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccines raised concerns because an abor on-derived cell line was used for tes ng them, but not in their produc on. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine, however, was developed, tested and is produced with abor-

on-derived cell lines raising addi onal moral concerns. The Congrega on for the Doctrine of the Faith has judged that ‘when ethically irreproachable Covid-19 vaccines are not available … it is morally acceptable to receive Covid-19 vac-cines that have used cell lines from aborted fetuses in their research and produc on process.’[1] However, if one can choose among equally safe and effec ve COVID-19 vaccines, the vaccine with the least connec on to abor on-derived cell lines should be chosen. Therefore, if one has the ability to choose a vaccine, Pfizer or Moderna’s vaccines should be chosen over Johnson & Johnson’s. “While we should con nue to insist that pharmaceu cal companies stop using abor on-derived cell lines, given the world-wide suffering that this pandemic is causing, we affirm again that being vaccinated can be an act of charity that serves the common good.”

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope Francis has called for a global prayer marathon for the en re month of May, praying for the end to the pandemic.

“The initiative will involve in a special way all shrines in the world” in promoting the initiative so that individuals, families and communities all take part in reciting the rosary, “to pray for the end of the pandemic,” said the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization in a press release April 21.

“It is the heartfelt desire of the Holy Father that the month of May be dedicated to a prayer marathon dedicated to the theme, ‘from the entire church an unceasing prayer rises to God,'” it said.

The theme refers to the miraculous event recounted in the Acts of the Apostles (12:1-12) when all the church prayed for Peter, who was imprisoned until God sent an angel to free him, illustrating how the Christian community comes together to pray in the face of danger and how the Lord listens and performs an unexpected miracle.

Each day in May, there will be a livestream from one of 30 chosen Marian shrines or sanctuaries to guide the prayer at 6 p.m. Rome time (noon EDT) on all Vatican media platforms:

https://www.vaticannews.va/en/church/news/2021-05/shrines-around-the-world-linked-for-recitation-of-the-rosary.html

The pope will open the monthlong prayer May 1 and conclude it May 31, the council said.

Each day of the month has a different prayer intention related to the pandemic. For instance, the May 17 intention is “for all world leaders and for all heads of international organizations.” That prayer will be celebrated at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington.

The following day, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Lourdes in France, prayers will be for all doctors and nurses. The May 23 prayer intention at the Quebec shrine, Notre Dame du Cap, is for law enforcement, military personnel and firefighters.

Amor y obediencia
