CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD

We are nearing the end of the liturgical year. Today s readings remind us that our own lives will draw to a close one day, and we can be certain that the Lord will encourage, strengthen, and save us--both now and at the last. The astonishing story of the Maccabees invigorates our faith as we behold an entire family willing to die rather than deny the Law of Moses. The psalm response echoes the faithful cries of the Maccabees: I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God. That same confidence appears in Saint Paul s letter to the Thessalonians. The Lord is faithful, he testifies; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. In the Gospel, Jesus explains just how long God s protection will endure. The children of God whom God guards, Jesus says, will live forever like an-gels.

Please Help with our Prison Ministry’s Advocacy for Children

Part of the work of Families, Fathers & Children, our prison minis-try, is to advocate to eliminate injustices. This is why we are advo-cating for Gov. Cuomo to sign the Preserving Family Bonds Act which is presently sitting on his desk. We need your help. We need letters and phone calls to the Governor. We will bring sample let-ters that you can sign, and we will be available to answer your ques-tions after Masses. The reason this bill is urgent is that it is written to undo damage that is presently being done in Family Court. At present, biological parents who surrender their children for adoption are entitled to post-adoption contact. But, if the bio parents fight for custody and lose custody, the Court is not permitted to order post-adoption contact. The real loser in this narrative is the child. There are studies that show how important it is for children to grow up knowing who their biological parents are and having continuing contact with them.
