Jesus takes three of His apostles to a high place and reveals to them His divine nature. He does this so that they might be prepared for yet another mountain top experience, the very same mountain to which we are drawn this day for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. For upon Mount Calvary, our Lord shows to His apostles and to us His true identity as redeemer of the world. He gives His body and blood so that we might have life and have it to the full. At the Holy Mass today we draw near to the holy mountain of Calvary so that we might experience anew the saving power of the Lord. And like the three apostles, we descend from that mountain and go out into the world as living witnesses and faithful stewards of all that the Lord has done for us.

THE TRANSFIGURATION

From time to time God leads His chosen ones to mountain tops so that He might reveal to them His love, mercy and even His very identity.

PRAYER “But Jesus came and touched them, saying, ‘Rise, and do not be afraid.’” Once again, we see Jesus retreating from the crowds and distractions of the world. In this passage, Jesus and a few of the disciples go up a mountain to encounter God in the event of the Transfiguration. So great this encounter, Jesus’ face shone like the sun and his clothes became white. Jesus, once again, is spending time in deep communion with his Father. For us deep communion with God is called prayer. The second of three Lenten disciplines, prayer, is time when we respond to Jesus words, “Do not be afraid.” Peter wanted to build tents for Jesus and the prophets, to remain in God’s holy presence. And while we can’t always seek out mountains or deserts, we can come before God in times of prayer. What are your deepest longings that you need to bring before the Father in prayer? When is it easiest for you to pray? When is it most difficult? What keeps you from prayer?

ASAP - Our Lady of Victory Camp – Letter from Archbishop Smith and Survey link Reverend Fathers; Parish, School and Camp Colleagues; Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I write today to advise you of some developments regarding the two youth camps currently operated by the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton. Over the years, Our Lady of Victory Camp and Camp Encounter have offered young people in the Archdiocese unique Catholic experiences in beautiful natural settings. Both have played important roles in the Church’s ministry to our precious young people. A recent assessment has revealed that facilities at the camps have so deteriorated over the years that the need for upgrades has become urgent. It is incumbent upon us to ensure that any investment of resources by the Archdiocese in response to this need be done carefully, deliberately, and responsibly. Therefore, we are beginning an extensive consultation of stakeholders associated with our camps ministry. The summer camping season for 2018 will continue as usual. However, we shall not operate the camps after 5 October 2018, or in 2019 while the consultations take place. I will provide more details on these consultations later this year. I am grateful to all who support the ministry of our camps in any way. Let us pray together for the light of the Holy Spirit to guide our discernment. P.S. We are beginning our consultation with an online survey, which you can find at https://caedm.ca/CampsSurvey. I encourage you to respond and look forward to your input.
