    Dear Friends,

As we head into the next week and await the results of the current elections, I think what we need most is to be rooted

in prayer. Please take some time to offer and ponder this prayer composed by Archbishop John Carroll of Baltimore,

the first bishop in the United States of America. His cousin, Charles, signed the Declaration of Independence, and his

    brother, Daniel, signed the Constitution.

In the Love of the Heart of Jesus,

    Fr. Jack D. Shrum

    Pastor

Prayer for Americaby Archbishop John Carroll (1791)

We pray, O almighty and eternal God, who through Jesus Christ has revealed thy glory to all nations, to preserve the

works of your mercy, that your Church, being spread through the whole world, may continue with unchanging faith

in the confession of your name.

We pray Thee, who alone are good and holy, to endow with heavenly knowledge, sincere zeal and sanctity of life, our

chief bishop, the pope, the vicar of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the government of his Church; our own bishop, all other

bishops, prelates and pastors of the Church; and especially those who are appointed to exercise among us the func-

tions of the holy ministry, and conduct your people into the ways of salvation.

We pray O God of might, wisdom and justice, through whom authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and

judgment decreed, assist with your Holy Spirit of counsel and fortitude the president of these United States, that his

administration may be conducted in righteousness and be eminently useful to your people over whom he presides; by

encouraging due respect for virtue and religion; by a faithful execution of the laws in justice and mercy; and by re-

    straining vice and immorality.

Let the light of your divine wisdom direct the deliberations of Congress, and shine forth in all the proceedings and

laws framed for our rule and government, so that they may tend to the preservation of peace, the promotion of na-

tional happiness, the increase of industry, sobriety and useful knowledge; and may perpetuate to us the blessing of

    equal liberty.

We pray for his excellency, the governor of this state, for the members of the assembly, for all judges, magistrates,

and other officers who are appointed to guard our political welfare, that they may be enabled, by your powerful pro-

tection, to discharge the duties of their respective stations with honesty and ability.

We recommend likewise, to your unbounded mercy, all our brethren and fellow citizens throughout the United States,

that they may be blessed in the knowledge and sanctified in the observance of your most holy law; that they may be

preserved in union, and in that peace which the world cannot give; and after enjoying the blessings of this life, be

admitted to those which are eternal.

Finally, we pray to you, O Lord of mercy, to remember the souls of your servants departed, who are gone before us

with the sign of faith and repose in the sleep of peace; the souls of our parents, relatives and friends; of those who,

when living, were members of this congregation, and particularly of such as are lately deceased; of all benefactors

who, by their donations or legacies to this Church, witnessed their zeal for the decency of divine worship and proved

their claim to our grateful and charitable remembrance. To these, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we

beseech you, a place of refreshment, light, and everlasting peace, through the same Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Sav-

    ior.

    Amen.

    T S In Ordinary Time

I love you, Lord, my strength.

EUCHARIST: TO KNOW, TO LOVE, AND TO SERVE GOD

#10. PASS THE FAITH ON TO OUR CHILDREN MORE PERMANENTLY *

In some countries, 90% of Catholic teens stop attending Mass after high school. How can we

make sure that our children’s faith will last a lifetime? How can we inoculate them against the

snares of the world, the flesh, and the devil? The answer is by helping them know and love

Christ in the Eucharist. No one who appreciates the infinite treasure of the Eucharist could pos-

sibly look to be “fed” somewhere else.

How do we teach our children to believe in the Real Presence? By using the only methods

available: word and deed. We need to talk about the Real Presence as we go about our daily

duties: after dinner, as we read from the Bible, during family prayers at night, in the car as we

drive to Sunday or daily Mass. This follows the pattern Moses gave the Israelites for teaching

    their children:

“And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach

them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when

you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” (Deuteronomy 6:67).

We can’t leave to others the task of educating our children in the faith. Priests and religious

teachers can help. But the primary responsibility for instructing our children is ours. That

means, we must first educate ourselves. Then we must share our knowledge as we share our

    everyday life.

We must reinforce our words with deeds. Children are naturalborn imitators. They will honor

as we honor; believe as we believe. They will also judge the sincerity of our beliefs by the sin-

    cerity of our actions.

The following good examples will help solidify our children’s belief in the Real Presence

    of Christ in the Eucharist:

Receive Holy Communion worthily and frequently, daily if possible.

Take the whole family to confession often to receive Communion more fruitfully.

Refer to the Eucharist, not as “it,” but instead as “Him” Jesus.

Adore attentively and wholeheartedly at the words of consecration.

Spend time in prayer and thanksgiving after Communion.

Genuflect reverently to Jesus in the tabernacle when passing the altar.

Make regular visits before the tabernacle with the whole family.

Sign up for an hour of adoration when there is Exposition of the Eucharist.

Make a sign of the cross whenever driving past a Catholic church.

Read stories of saints who died for their belief in the Eucharist.

Invite fallenaway Catholics to come back to the Eucharist.

Invite nonCatholics to Mass and offer to explain the Eucharist.

    Stewardship of Treasure

Every year at this time, we are asked to think about our stewardship of all

the gifts that God has placed in our trust. Not just how we are taking care of

those gifts, but how we are sharing those gifts with our parish and our com-

munity as well. In the coming weeks, we will be asked to consider if we are

returning a proper portion of those gifts to our Church for the Lord to build

up His Kingdom. Next Sunday, we will be hearing from one of our parish-

ioners about how God has blessed them, how they became grateful, and

how & why they chose to share their blessings.

Finance Council Summary of the Financial Report

Fiscal Year 20192020 which ended on June 30th

The Parish received a total of $1,396,000 in Ordinary Income this fiscal year. Ordinary Income

is what we all contribute through Sacrificial Giving and is the primary source of funds for our

Parish to operate. Ordinary Income for the fiscal year came in 11% below budget. We were 5%

below the goal before the pandemic began and due to lost income between March and June this

    gap grew larger.

The Parish’s total income was $1,651,000 for the fiscal year. Total income includes Ordinary

Income, as well as funds received from Debt Reduction, the Annual Catholic Appeal rebate,

donations, and other sources. The amount budgeted for total income was $1,842,000. Thus, total

    income was 10% below budget.

The amount budgeted for expenses last year was $1,953,000. The actual expenses came in at

$1,733,000. The amount of actual expenses was 11% less than anticipated.

Due to the Covid19 pandemic, this has been a very challenging year for the parish as I am sure

it has been for you as well in multiple ways. The Parish staff continues to focus their attention

on managing expenses within the budget and reduce them in some areas since live programs

were cancelled between March and June and into the 20202021 fiscal year. Instead, programs

went virtual as much as possible.

During the period from April to September 2020, the Archdiocese has allowed parishes to make

only interest payments on our loans which now stand at a total of $457,000. We applied for the

Payroll Protection Program government loan to help with paying salaries of Parish and School

staff. We were granted $707,000. We are hoping the government will forgive this loan as it was

used solely for qualified expenses. If not forgiven, this becomes an additional debt we have.

We will find out our standing with this loan in the next 3 months or so, as we submit the docu-

mentation needed to request forgiveness. We will keep you informed on this.

As we have reported previously, the current trend for Sacrificial Giving remains downward

even before the pandemic. Five years ago, the Parish was taking in almost $100,000 more in

ordinary income each year. We have held at that lower income for 3 years with this year being

$171,000 less than last year. Unless we have an increase in giving, we will need to cut programs

and staffing, even while the staff presently are working at 80% of their normal salaries.

As we enter our annual Stewardship of Treasure campaign, the Finance Council asks that you

prayerfully reflect on your level of Sacrificial Giving. Anything you give does make a differ-

ence. Only through your giving can the Parish continue to operate.

A complete summary of the Parish’s financial position is set forth in the Annual Parish Report.

This will be sent to you with our stewardship mailing within the next week and will be ported

on the website. Feel free to contact the Finance Council if you have questions. See the bulletin

    for the email address.

On behalf of Fr. Jack, his pastoral and administrative teams, thank you!
