Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

As you walked into our church this weekend, we still have the flowers

from Christmas season, but we are already in Ordinary Time in the Church.

Since the flowers were holding so well, thanks to those who watered them with

care and love through Christmas season, we will still keep them the extra week

to give adornment to our church as this weekend we celebrate the feast of Our

Lady of Altagracia, the Blessed Mother venerated in Dominican Republic with

the Image that we see by the altar.

The image refers to Betlehem, as we see Blessed Mother in front of Baby

Jesus laying in the manger. Among the Stars adorning her, the Blessed Mother,

is the Star of Betlehem, that shines on the scene. She is with the crown as the

Queen of Heaven, with the twelve stars as the Queen of the Apostles. She is in

the pose of adoration in front of her Divine Son with Saint Joseph standing

behind the Blessed Mother. This image is a good reminder of the reality of Christmas that we just celebrated. May

God bless the Dominican Republic and all it’s people who venerate the Blessed Mother of High Grace, grace from

high heavens as the literal translation would suggest.

This grace is her Divine Motherhood, that brings down Christ from heaven, and lifts up Blessed Mother to

heavens. And for us She becomes a powerful intercessor, and Christ becomes our human brother and Divine Savior.

That is plenty to be contemplated in this image. In our parish for the rest of the year the Image is placed over the

steps leading to religious education office. She is a good Patroness for those who want to learn the faith.

This past Sunday we had a very real Baptism of the Lord, as we baptized 35 children and youth who are

preparing as well for other Sacraments. We will baptize a few more on February 10th, as for some this date was not

possible to make it.

Interesting to see how quickly we have moved to the first miracle of Jesus this Sunday. As we know, John

the Baptist indicated Jesus to his disciples, and they started to follow Jesus and were called by him. It is right on the

beginning of the Gospel of St. John in chapter 2, that starts with the account of the miracle at the wedding of Cana.

We could ask ourselves, why would Jesus change water into wine for the wedding party as his first miracle. Was it

not more important to take care of the sick first ? Interesting to know why Jesus did it, why it was important to

bring happiness to this marrying couple. Certainly it elevates the importance of marriage and family. The life and

love that are God’s gifts are given to us directly through our family, through married love. Jesus elevates the dignity

of married love and rewards it with the gift of eternal life. That love bears eternal fruits for those who believe, and

Jesus makes it eternal by inviting us to heaven. This water turned into wine is a preparation for the next miracle of

changing wine into his blood, that will nourish the believers for eternal life.

The Miracle of Cana is the first miracle, and the miracle of the Last Supper is the last miracle of Jesus

before his death. The miracle of wine embraces Jesus public ministry, marking the beginning and the end. As Jesus

did say from the cross: “it is finished !” He truly gives us all he has. He always gives us what is best for us. He

always wants us to raise our minds and hearts to heaven, where Jesus wants us to be forever. This- forever with

Jesus- is based on how much faith we give to Jesus, how much of our life and how much of our heart we give to

him, who gave us all of his love and life.

The miracle of Cana is the miracle of abundance. As Jesus says, he wants our happiness to be complete.

Only God can give us the completeness that we desire. Only God can satisfy our thirst for happiness, for peace, for

love, for security. Only God can protect us from destructive tendencies of our selfishness and sin. Only God can

protect us from the emptiness of death, from nothingness of the grave. Only God can make something out of

nothing.

The blessings of every Sacrament bring us to the presence of God. Let us allow Jesus into our lives by

putting our faith and trust in him. And He will tell us: - let it be done to you as you believed-.

Jesus, please continue to change the water of our humanity into the wine of your divine grace for us and all

those who believe. Bless with abundance our families and our parish, make our happiness complete. Gospel follows:

-“As the disciples had seen the miracle, they began to believe in Jesus-.”

Lord, increase our faith !!!

God bless everyone always !!!

Queridas hermanas y Hermanos:

parroquia, completa nuestra felicidad.

Or, on manqua de
