Special Programme on the Zheng for Chinese Lovers' Day

Playing an instrument with over 2,500 years of recorded history, Classical zheng performer, Yi Dong, makes her 12th annual return to Edinburgh to "indulge us with a rich spa of the spirits and mind" (Xinhua) with music of love stories and poems of China. Yi will share her first-hand insights to the friendship and working partnership between the 81-year old composer HE Zhanhao and the half century-junior girl he has been working with for nearly 15 years. "It's proved to be my best music experience for years" (BBC World Service). Part of the 5th Glamour of Jasmine Chinese Arts Festival.

Following highly successful evenings with Novello, Berlin, Porter and Kern evenings, Fife’s premier operatic concert group Ensemble celebrates its 25th successive year in the superb setting of St Andrew’s and St George’s West with a programme in word and song celebrating the genius of George Gershwin. Although he died before he was 40, Gershwin’s prolific output included Swanee, Summertime, S’Wonderful, Embraceable You and his revolutionary American folk opera Porgy and Bess.

Harking back to the golden era of Big Band, the SLJO bring you an afternoon of swing, jazz and funk. Roger Hutchinson, author of the international best seller Calum’s Road, in discussion about a giant of a man and the building of his epic Raasay road and Andy Wightman in conversation about the genesis of his seminal book The Poor Had No Lawyers, and the question of land ownership in Scotland. In this Year of Homecoming, na Clarsairean (the Scottish Harp Orchestra), Lothian Gaelic Choir and invited guests present a programme which is a veritable tapestry of music old and new from around Scotland and beyond. Enjoy haunting Gaelic songs and airs as well as toe-tapping dance tunes-and a few surprises - in an informal but lively ceilidh atmosphere. Na Clarsairean will perform a new suite “Return to Tiree,” composed by their director, Isobel Mieras, which contrasts the plangent tones of the historic wire strung clarsach with the warmth and colour of the modern instrument.

Geoffrey Madell’s 80th birthday concert

The programme includes works by Ravel, Berlioz and Gershwin.

Roseberry Trio

Following their successful debut last year, The Roseberry Trio return to the Fringe with a programme which includes a rarely performed trio by York Bowen, Mozart Horn Quintet transcribed for trio, Franz Strauss' dreamy Nocturno and a sparkling gem by Kalliwoda.

Classical Latin American and Spanish Song Recital

A song recital by opera singer Ann Liebeck and brilliant young Cuban pianist Marcos Madrigal, who will perform songs and pieces for solo piano by Rodrigo, Granados, Ginastera, de Falla, Villa Lobos and Lecuona. Ann has had a long career in opera in Europe and the US. Marcos has won prizes internationally, including the 2013 Jaen piano competition in Spain. Look out for some tango surprises!

Cantica Alba, the Edinburgh-based ten-voiced a cappella ensemble directed by Michael Harris, present Heavenly Harmony: a programme of sacred music, from the Renaissance to the present day, from Thomas Tallis to Kenneth Leighton, James MacMillan, Bob Chilcott and Kerry Andrew. A celebration of the many faces of British sacred choral music over the centuries.


St Andrew’s and St George’s West was built in 1784 as St Andrew’s Church, the first church in the New Town of Edinburgh. In 1843 St Andrew’s was the scene of the Disruption of the Church of Scotland, a bitter schism which lasted decades. The Disruption was so significant to the 19

th Century in Scotland that

it is commemorated in the Great Tapestry of Scotland. This is a huge community art project where over 160 scenes from Scotland’s history were stitched throughout Scotland and then assembled into one great narrative.

The Disruption panel was embroidered by a group of 18 volunteer stitchers based here at St Andrew’s and St George’s West.
