Prayers for the ChurchAnglican Cycle of Prayer: Please pray for Bishop Christian Ebisike and the clergy and people of the Diocese of Ngbo, one of the 161 dioceses in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). The Church of Nigeria counts over 18 million baptized members and continues to be the fastest growing member church in the Anglican Communion. Anglican worship in the area later to become the Diocese of Ngbo began in 1916 with the arrival of a Nigerian-born cleric and missionary. The diocese itself, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, was created when the Diocese of Enugu was split into three dioceses in 2007.The diocese exists in a primary rural and low lying area that has seen considerable civil unrest and conflict. In the Nigerian Civil War of 1967-1969, many parishioners were killed and most of the churches destroyed, damaged and/or looted. Despite those depredations, the diocese grew. Once relative peace was established, the diocese established evangelism as her primary goal and the church thrived. Some unrest continues in the area. In September 2010, Bishop Ebiske was kidnapped when his car was stopped at a roadblock. Thankfully, he was released the next day. In recent weeks, the bishop has called for government intervention as nomadic Fulani (primarily Muslim) herdsmen have been accused of slaughtering many Christian and other settlers in the area. Please pray especially for a lasting and just peace, for on-going evangelism, and for the very vigorous youth movement.Anglican Diocese of the Great Lakes Cycle of Prayer: Please pray for non-parochial clergy, including Fr. Tony Bender, Fr. Richard Dalton, Fr. Wayne Hutson, Fr. Dale Minor, Fr. Stockton Wulsin, the Rev. Barbara Wulsin Fr. John Jorden, and Deacon Tim Luken.Parish Cycle of Prayer: Please pray for Sue and Alex McKeown; Daniel McNelis; Janet McNelis; our Godly Play classes; and our Technical Services Ministry.

Please also keep Kevin and Jenny Marinov; John McGuirl; our Young Lambs class; and those who beautify the church grounds in your prayers this week. While included in the Prayers of the People at 9 a.m. last Sunday, they were inadvertently omitted from “The Net.”

The Feast of the Ascension, which falls 40 days after Easter (this year it was Thursday, May 25), commemorates Christ’s assent into Heaven to be

seated at the right hand of the Father. Ascension Day is more than just a remembering of the soles of Jesus’ feet as he drifted up into the clouds! It is the fundamental Christian acknowledgment of the vindication of Jesus by God the Father. He is vindicated from the sentence of treason and death that was laid upon him by Pontius Pilate in his trial. He is vindicated from the charge of blasphemy that the Jews, and in particular, the High Priests laid upon him.He is vindicated and restored to his rightful position as King of the Universe, Ruler of all of Creation. We might wonder why Jesus waited 40 days before ascending into Heaven. What did he do for those 40 days? It is important to note that in Scripture “40 days” is a catch phrase. It is not necessarily meant to be taken literally. Rather, it means “a long time.” The fact that Jesus ascended into Heaven 40 days after his resurrection is meant to signify that he remained with his disciples for a long time before he returned to the Father. This 40 days was an important time for the Church. During this period Jesus taught the disciples concerning the Scriptures that they might more fully understand their meaning and the implication of them upon the experience of his incarnation, earthly ministry and his death and resurrection.

The disciples learned so that others might understand and come to know the saving grace that is Jesus Christ. We might wonder, “Why did Jesus ascend into Heaven as all? Why didn’t he just remain here?” He ascended because the resurrection is more than the resuscitation of his corpse. He was given a new spiritual body in the resurrection. He appeared to the disciples that they might know the love and forgiveness of the resurrection. He remained for 40 days that they might comprehend its impact upon their lives and the lives of the whole world. He ascended into Heaven in order to prepare a place for us that we, too, might come to share in his Heavenly Kingdom. He does not leave us alone, however. He sends the Holy Spirit into our lives and hearts through Baptism, that we might never be separated from him, but always connected to him through the Holy Spirit.“Lo I am with you even to the end of the ages.”

Ascension Christ’s vindication from death
