PASTOR’S CORNERDear Parishioners:

The Gospel of the Mass for this Second Sunday of Advent presents John the Baptist proclaiming a “baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” He was preparing the way for the One who would come after him, who will save his people from their sins. The people who heard John The Baptist prepared for the coming of the Savior by acknowledging their sins. They heard his call to repentance.

This reminds us that the Season of Advent is a penitential season. As we prepare for the coming of the Lord, we do this through repentance, by acknowledging our sins and being cleansed by the grace of Christ. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is the way in which we should prepare the way of the Lord this Season of Advent. Just as great numbers of people went out to John the Baptist in the desert, so we should eagerly seek the opportunity to confess our sins and have our souls washed clean. Confession are heard Saturdays from 3:15-4:15 p.m. year round. Additionally, confessions will be heard on Monday, December 18 from 7:00–9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, December 20 from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

As you make your preparations for Christmas this Season of Advent, remember to “Prepare the way of the Lord” by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. You’ll be glad you did! May God bless you this holy Season of Advent!

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 10, 2017

The English word “gospel” in Greek is translated as euangelion. It means “good

news” or “joyful tidings” and historically o en referred to a festive occasion such as the birth of an emperor. Mark’s announcement of the beginning of the Good News is a resounding proclamation that now, in Jesus, the long-promised visitation of God has begun. God has sent a messenger, John the Baptist, to “prepare the way.” If a liturgical season were to have a patron saint, John the Baptist would be the patron saint of Advent. John the Baptist diverted attention from himself to Jesus. His ministry was not about himself but about the “one mightier than I [who] is coming a er me.” Our own Advent journey calls us to walk in the sandal prints of John the Baptist and become forerunners of Jesus — people who draw attention away from themselves and toward Jesus.

John appears, preaching a baptism of repentance, for the remission of sin. e Greek word for the English “repentance” is metanoia, which means “an about-face or conversion.” is was ritually celebrated and confi rmed by being baptized. John’s invitation to a one-time immersion in the Jordan River was a rite of passage from a former way of living — a conversion — to a new lifestyle of living a life committed to God. Today our being baptized “with the Holy Spirit” enables us to do the work of God, for in baptism our lives are gra ed onto Christ. We participate in his priestly, prophetic, and kingly ministry. We become heralds, like John the Baptist, of Christ’s redeeming presence in the world.

Have you ever lost your way? What was it like? How did you fi nd

your way back?

Who are the people in your life who model living the “way of the

Lord”?

How will you be faithful to your

baptismal commitment this Advent?

John’s Invitation Mark 1:1-8

SIGNS OF THE SEASON

e brilliant red leaves of the poinsettia are a common decoration this time year. Its association with Christmas began many years ago when the story developed of Pepita, a poor Mexican girl who had no gi for the Christ Child at Christmas. Her cousin Pedro told her that even the most humble gi given in love is a welcomed present. So, Pepita gathered a handful of weeds into a small bouquet. As she laid it at the foot of the crèche, it burst into blooms of red. From that day on, the poinsettia has also been known as the Flor de Nochebuena, or Flower of the Holy Night (Christmas Eve).

child. is is a healing memory; it brings hope.” —P E B XVI

During the Second Week of Advent we celebrate one of the holy days of obligation — December 8, the Immaculate Conception. Commemorating Mary’s conception without the stain of original sin, this feast is an ideal time to renew our baptismal promises — and to remember that through our baptism, we, too, are brought into new life with Christ. Saint Juan Diego never expected to see the Virgin Mary as

he walked the fi fteen miles to attend Mass on December 9, 1531. Much to his shock, a beautiful young woman dressed like an Aztec princess appeared to him and, speaking in his own language, told him to go to the bishop and request that a chapel be built on the hill where she was standing. When the bishop resisted, the young woman gave Juan Diego a sign — roses blooming in winter — which he gathered into his tilma, a long cloak. When he presented them to the bishop, an image of Our Lady miraculously appeared on the tilma. The image, which has not deteriorated over the centuries, is called Our Lady of Guadalupe. St. Juan Diego, pray for us!

ADVENT PR AYERLoving God and Father,

I know that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed.

is Advent season, forgive me, wash away my sins, and make me whole again.

Amen.

ST. ANDREW ADULT FAITH FORMATIONBIBLE STUDY

Have you ever felt daunted by the struggles within the Church? Then join us for First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Community, a Bible Study by Dr. Tim Gray. The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth are in many ways similar to our struggles today as Christians. They, too, witnessed division, scandal, immorality, persecution and other trials. In response, St. Paul taught the Corinthians about the Church as the Body of Christ, introducing them to the most powerful gift of all: the Eucharist.

Tuesdays, January 9-March 20 – 7:30-9:00 p.m.Nugent Parish Hall

Please send registrations to the Parish Office by Wednesday, December 27. Cost for the workbook is $26. To ensure that we have your workbook by the first session, please register by the deadline date. Make checks payable to St. Andrew Parish with First Corinthians in the memo line.

HELP CARE FOR ELDERS – Help religious communities. “Your generous contribution helps us to care for our retired sisters and enables our younger sisters to continue in active ministry,” writes a religious sister. Your gift to today’s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications nursing care, and more for thousands of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. A NOTE OF THANKS – Sister Mary Jennifer of the Adorer Missionary Sisters of the Poor that was here in May sent us a Thank You card expressing her deep gratitude for your support. She wrote “Yes! You Did It! You helped us build the dormitory for girls.”
